{"id":260304,"date":"2022-01-07T10:44:22","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T16:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=260304"},"modified":"2022-01-06T22:09:56","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T04:09:56","slug":"australian-woman-college-down-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/australian-woman-college-down-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian woman believed to be country&#8217;s first college graduate with Down syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Rachel High of Adelaide, Australia, is celebrating a monumental achievement after becoming the first known college graduate with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-syndrome-dies-denied-heart-transplant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Down syndrome<\/a> in her country.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and her mother, Miriam, spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-12-29\/university-degree-dream-comes-true-for-rachel-high\/100717448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a> about the 10-year journey it took for the 44-year-old to navigate the university system and get her degree from Flinders University, saying it wasn&#8217;t necessarily the academic work but the social isolation that was most difficult for Rachel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;There was no mentor, there was nobody meeting her at the gate and taking her into the classroom, there was nobody sharing that experience with her \u2026 and that caused incredible isolation, so much so that she didn&#8217;t want to stay,&#8221; Miriam said. &#8220;She&#8217;d had enough [and] she said, &#8216;I don&#8217;t like it there, I&#8217;m on my own, nobody speaks to me.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rachel wanted to quit, but her parents encouraged her and established a buddy support person who could accompany Rachel to her classes. The University later took over this model, establishing a mentorship program to help people like Rachel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JdZ7CbzRhUA\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As part of her final research project, Rachel worked under the supervision of diversity and inclusion researcher Sally Robinson to write her paper, titled &#8220;Graduating University as a Woman with Down Syndrome: Reflecting on My Education.&#8221; The paper was so well-written that it was published in a peer-reviewed journal.\u00a0&#8220;I was very strongly convinced of the merits of her work, but a peer-reviewed academic paper is empirical evidence that this is a high-quality piece of scholarly work,&#8221; said Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson went on to speak about how the university system as a whole has a long way to go to better support people with intellectual disabilities like Rachel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-down-syndrome-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Doctor schedules abortion for baby with Down syndrome before giving parents the diagnosis<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;People with sensory disabilities or people with a physical disability are entitled to support for their learning at university, but people with intellectual disabilities are not. It&#8217;s time for us to re-look at the way that people with intellectual disability are provided with support at university, to think about what people should be able to expect,&#8221; said Robinson.\u00a0&#8220;We need to raise our expectations that people with intellectual disability can succeed at university.
