(NRL News Today<\/a>)\u00a0With the end of the two-year legislation session looming on the horizon, pro-abortion New Jersey Democrats are\u201d in talks to protect abortion rights but can\u2019t agree on what that should mean,\u201d according to Susan K. Livio and\u00a0Brent Johnson<\/a>. Translated, \u201cProtect abortion rights\u201d means abortion on demand and paying for all abortions, not just for lower income women.<\/p>\n

What pro-abortion Gov. Phil Murphy has done administratively, such as approving regulations that allowed more medical professionals to perform early aspiration abortions (advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives and certified midwives), seems only to have whetted the appetite for more.<\/p>\n

Advocacy groups<\/a>\u00a0such as ACLU-NJ and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey want everything in one fell swoop:<\/p>\n

The current measure (S3030<\/a>) would do more than enshrine a woman\u2019s right to an abortion in New Jersey in the event the nation\u2019s highest court returns a decision in June that upholds a Mississippi ban after 15 weeks and overturns Roe. The bill would require insurance plans cover the procedure without deductibles and co-pays, and regardless of a women\u2019s immigration status. For financial and political reasons, these provisions have made some moderate Democrats uneasy.<\/em><\/p>\n

According to the story, \u201cFirst trimester abortions cost about $470, which is when 91% of abortions are performed, according to\u00a0the Kaiser Family Foundation.<\/a>\u00a0But the price rises exponentially \u2014 into the thousands of dollars \u2014 later in the pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Livio and\u00a0Johnson<\/a> spoke to an unnamed source who:<\/p>\n

said lawmakers are concerned about the cost, but it is not the only issue. The source said it comes down to \u201cHow much do we want to make it easier to have an abortion?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is support to codify existing state Supreme Court law protecting a right to an abortion, and varying degrees of support for an insurance mandate, the source said,\u201d according to Livio and Johnson. \u201cIt\u2019s likely that covering undocumented women would not be included in the new version.\u201d<\/p>\n

Advocacy groups pushing for full funding of abortion legislation say \u201cthey are prepared for the compromise to fall short of their goal of making abortion affordable and accessible to any woman or girl in New Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t get it this session, it\u2019s fine. We would rather wait to get it right,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n
