{"id":260209,"date":"2022-01-05T14:42:18","date_gmt":"2022-01-05T20:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=260209"},"modified":"2022-01-04T22:40:52","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T04:40:52","slug":"sex-selective-abortion-india-wounding-skewing-ratios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selective-abortion-india-wounding-skewing-ratios\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex-selective abortion in India is still wounding women and skewing sex ratios"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex-selective abortion is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chdslsa.gov.in\/right_menu\/act\/pdf\/PNDT.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India \u2026 on paper.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that didn\u2019t stop 25-year-old Laali\u2019s family from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2021\/dec\/27\/families-want-a-son-at-any-cost-the-women-forced-to-abort-female-foetuses-in-india\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forcing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0her to take an abortion pill when they discovered she was three months pregnant with yet another daughter. Her bleeding lasted for eight hours. Eventually, she lost consciousness, believing she would die alongside her baby, and was hospitalized. The morning after her release, she returned to work in the fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laali\u2019s story is, sadly, not terribly unique, and physicians in India have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-fda-abortion-pill-india-dangers\/\">warned <em>against<\/em> self-managed abortion<\/a>, even as the U.S. broadens it. Social health activists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2021\/dec\/27\/families-want-a-son-at-any-cost-the-women-forced-to-abort-female-foetuses-in-india\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that every third house in Laali\u2019s village has committed a sex-selective abortion. It is further <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selective-abortions-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that at least 13.5 million girls have been aborted in India between 1987-2016 alone. Since prenatal sex determination tests became popular in the 1970\u2019s, it is thought that India has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selective-abortions-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 63 million fewer females than it would have, had such testing never become available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFamilies want a son at any cost. Any cost!\u201d Laali <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2021\/dec\/27\/families-want-a-son-at-any-cost-the-women-forced-to-abort-female-foetuses-in-india\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIf I die [today], my husband will remarry tomorrow morning, hoping the next woman will give birth to a son.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Indians\u2019 stated support for gender equality is strong when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/global\/2013\/01\/04\/indians-support-gender-equality-but-still-give-men-edge-in-workplace-higher-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, long-standing cultural attitudes and practices are likely to blame for the single-minded preference for male children. Men are still considered the primary breadwinners in India; when polled, most Indians say men should take precedence over women in higher education and in the workplace during tough times. Furthermore, although dowry payments were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/jun\/05\/take-a-stand-indian-families-returning-dowries-dahez-roko-abhiyan-campaign\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outlawed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1961, the practice remains widespread. This contributes to an overall impression that girl children are more expensive investments with lower returns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selection-abortion-gendercide-how-okay\/\">If aborting girls for sex-selection is wrong, then how is killing them for other reasons okay?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprisingly, the practice of sex-selective abortion is leading to a skewed population sex ratio. The United Nations Population Fund <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/india.unfpa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/pub-pdf\/Sex%20Ratio%20at%20Birth%20-%20Revised_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the male-to-female ratio at birth to be nearly 114 to 100. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/indias-prime-minister-brings-social-media-awareness-sex-selective-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consequences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this imbalance are far-reaching: a lack of available brides can lead many men to search for child brides or to patronize sex traffickers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is not alone in this regard. Decades of enforcement of their draconian one-child policy have left China in similar straits. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humantraffickingsearch.org\/human-trafficking-in-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Human Trafficking Search, \u201cChina is home to a thriving sex trade. Much of it comes from trafficking and selling young women and girls for marriage.\u201d Many foreign women are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/feature\/2011\/06\/02\/bride-trafficking-china-unveiled\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to China with promises of work, only to be sold into marriage upon arrival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion harms women in many ways \u2013 both in the ways we commonly think of, such as the psychological\/emotional trauma experienced by many post-abortive women, and in more complex, less obvious ways, as the situations in India, China, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-loss-5-million-girls-selective-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many other countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women like Laali, abortion does not even remotely resemble a tool for her empowerment.
