{"id":260076,"date":"2022-01-02T15:34:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-02T21:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=260076"},"modified":"2022-01-05T16:15:13","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T22:15:13","slug":"baby-safe-haven-law-critics-ideology-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-safe-haven-law-critics-ideology-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"Baby safe haven law critics put ideology over facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the debate around Mississippi\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mississippi-15-week-abortion-ban-supreme-court\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational Age Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett addressed pro-abortion arguments dedicated to \u201cforced motherhood,\u201d pointing out that safe haven laws exist in all 50 states and serve as a last-ditch effort when all other resources are over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of Justice Barrett\u2019s comments, some abortion activists have sought to cast doubt on the efficacy of, and even the need for, safe haven laws. But these criticisms fail to acknowledge what safe haven laws actually are for, and what they do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Concerns raised<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s flawed from the get-go,\u201d Adam Pertman, president and CEO of The National Center on Adoption and Permanency said to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-supreme-court-lifestyle-health-phoenix-centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention-84d8ab1cb4bba84a4d39fc50abb49769\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, claiming that \u201cbecause a woman who would put her kid in a trash can is not instead going to see a sign and say \u2018Oh I\u2019ll go to the police station instead.&#8217;\u201d Such a woman, he claimed, is \u201cnot cogent enough to make a decision, or she wouldn\u2019t put her kid in the trash can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other critics claim the safe haven laws don\u2019t go far enough to help the women in crisis pregnancies. Still others raise concerns about not knowing the familial medical history of infants surrendered under safe haven laws \u2013 babies who usually are adopted right away, spending little time in foster care. \u201cWe didn\u2019t really know what we were walking into. It\u2019s just one of those things where it\u2019s a total leap of faith,\u201d said one parent interviewed by the AP.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Missing the bigger picture<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these criticisms, however, miss the larger picture. According to the National Safe Haven Alliance <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/00a9ad85-fd88-4ee2-9f19-34da596ea2fc.filesusr.com\/ugd\/f2cba0_26578f46f5cb459f86452ebc039f9aef.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 4,127 babies have been saved since 1999 when the state of Texas established the first safe haven law, with 120 of those babies (3%) saved in 2020 alone. By 2008, all 50 states had adopted safe haven laws. Contrary to the claims of Pertman, data from the CDC shows that babies killed on their first day of life <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6939a1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped 67%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The claim that safe haven activists do not contribute to the needs of women experiencing crisis pregnancies is unfounded. In 2020, the National Safe Haven Alliance (NSHA) created the Baby Sprinkle Project which, according to the report, \u201cprovides direct support for parents that need help getting on their feet, whether they choose to parent, place their child for adoption, or relinquish their baby using the Safe Haven law.\u201d The organization runs a crisis hotline, and has several programs to help women and families in crisis situations. Its core mission is to help save the babies who might otherwise be killed, giving women an escape hatch and keeping their babies alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/infant-murders-safe-haven-laws-publicity\/\">Recent infant murders show that state Safe Haven Laws need more publicity<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while it is true that parents adopting an infant under safe haven laws face many unknowns about the baby\u2019s background, this is not a valid argument against safe haven laws. Parents who adopt these babies understand that adopting a safe haven baby, even with all the unknowns and differences from a traditional adoption process, still saves a human life and gives a child a home. Safe haven laws must be seen as what they are: a last-ditch effort for a woman who feels she is out of options, and one that saves the life of a vulnerable infant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in all, data shows that safe haven laws are an important option for women and newborns.
