{"id":259076,"date":"2021-12-17T10:45:27","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T16:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=259076"},"modified":"2021-12-20T13:51:11","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T19:51:11","slug":"abortion-pill-inventor-self-managed-abortions-dangerous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-inventor-self-managed-abortions-dangerous\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion pill inventor explains why &#8216;self-managed&#8217; abortions are dangerous"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The pro-abortion movement and the abortion industry have long been pushing for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/increasing-abortion-pill-expansion-flout-fda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cno test\u201d abortions<\/a> by pill.\u00a0Pro-abortion sources <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-tweets-diy-abortion-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been promoting abortion pills through the mail<\/a> as a way of getting around laws banning abortion if <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> is overturned, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has just announced that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\">permanently loosening the abortion pill&#8217;s safety restrictions to allow it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the very man who invented the abortion pill, French scientist\u00a0Dr. Etienne-Emile Baulieu, said in a 2013 book that using the abortion pill this way is dangerous.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Examination needed<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>According to pro-abortion author Miriam Claire, Baulieu said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>About 5 in 1000 pregnancies (0.5%) are ectopic\u2026 If ectopic pregnancy is not detected, the woman goes through a disaster, regardless of whether or not she uses RU-486 [the abortion pill], because it will rupture with heavy internal hemorrhaging\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This is why I insist that a woman should be medically examined if she wants an abortion of any kind, surgical or medical. Ectopic pregnancy presents a great risk.<sup>1<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Baulieu says, the only way to rule out a potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy is by examining the woman.\u00a0This can most easily be done by giving her an ultrasound.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/ectopic-pregnancy\/diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the National Health Service<\/a>, \u201cAn ectopic pregnancy is usually diagnosed by carrying out a transvaginal\u00a0ultrasound scan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two blood tests to measure pregnancy hormones, performed 48 hours apart, can also detect an ectopic pregnancy. As the National Health Service notes, ectopic pregnancies are hard to diagnose without these measures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRDnVSMr5j0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;Pretty terrible&#8221; has now become desirable<\/h4>\n<p>Others in the abortion industry have had reservations about so-called \u201cself-managed\u201d abortion in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The National Abortion Federation conference \u201cTransforming Adversity, the Future of Quality Care,\u201d held on April 2-4, 1995 in New Orleans, was recorded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pro-life group Life Dynamics<\/a>,\u00a0which made the tapes available to Live Action News.<\/p>\n<p>In the workshop \u201cPositioning Ourselves for the Future, Skills and Strategies,\u201d abortion providers were asked to break into groups and talk about their greatest fears for the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-test-abortion-pill-women-health-interventions\/\">Study: \u2018No-test\u2019 abortion pill makes women more likely to need \u2018health interventions\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One provider talked about the then-new abortion pill RU-486, along with methotrexate, another drug that can be used to cause abortion. She said, &#8220;[W]e also discussed dangers of unsupervised use, but essentially, misuse, of these drugs and women self-prescribing medical abortions, which would be pretty terrible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It has only taken 26 years for self-prescribed, \u201cself-managed\u201d abortion to go from \u201cpretty terrible\u201d to a good option for women.<\/p>\n<h4>Tens of thousands already experiencing complications annually<\/h4>\n<p>And, today, we know <em>more<\/em> about how dangerous the abortion pill is, not less.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 5-8% of women taking the abortion pill <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">end up in the ER.<\/a> This amounts to up to 27,000 women a year. If so-called &#8220;self\u2013managed &#8221; abortions become more common, this number may rise. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/questions-and-answers-mifeprex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the FDA<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in women who took Mifeprex. As of December 31, 2018, there were reports of 24 deaths of women associated with Mifeprex since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two women have already reportedly died from undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies after taking the abortion pill.
