But they can be a highly influential variable affecting the mother\u2019s ultimate decision to either keep or abort her child. And abortions often happen to protect men\u2019s interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two recent media pieces address the ways in which men benefit from abortion \u2014 one, an article entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/cognoscenti\/2021\/12\/13\/men-benefit-safe-abortion-access-supreme-court-kaivan-shroff\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men like me benefit from safe abortion access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d published on WBUR\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/opinion\/section\/cognoscenti\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognoscenti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forum, is sincere; the other, a video entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/prochoicemen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ProChoiceMen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is satirical.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, there\u2019s more truth in the jest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o950k2HffWw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/inside\/staff\/kaivan-shroff\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaivan Shroff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of the WBUR article, lists a variety of reasons why he doesn\u2019t want a child. But he dances around the truth. The video\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ProChoiceMen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, cuts to the heart of the objections Shroff raises. Below is a comparison list&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201cAt 28, after 10 years of college and multiple graduate schools, in many ways, it feels like my life is just about to begin.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates: \u201cAbortion has allowed [me to] \u2026 stay home and chase my dream of becoming a professional gamer, comedian, and social media influencer.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the latter of these statements is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, the underlying message is the same: <i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">\u201cI\u2019m too self-centered to consider taking on any adult responsibilities.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 The man is thinking only of his own life and future, not the life of his preborn child, which literally <em>is<\/em> just beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201cI\u2019m not in a relationship.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates: \u201cI deserve to enjoy sex without commitment, marriage, or parenthood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201cI haven\u2019t built a nest egg.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0satirically translates: \u201cIf I had to take care of a kid, I never would have been able to get my Tesla. My Tesla is my baby.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The underlying message here is, <i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">\u201cI\u2019m not willing to make any personal financial sacrifices, even as a consequence of my own actions.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/boyfriends-pro-choice-abortion-coercion\/\">Boyfriend\u2019s classic \u2018pro-choice\u2019 response to unplanned pregnancy was actually abortion coercion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201c[F]rankly \u2026 I want to eke out and enjoy every last minute of my 20s.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates: \u201cIt\u2019s ridiculous to think that just because I\u2019m the father, I\u2019m expected to be a dad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201cIf [a sex partner] still got pregnant &#8230; though entirely her decision, I assume we would both want the same thing: an abortion.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates: \u201cIt\u2019s \u2018Her body, and her choice\u2019 &#8230; so don\u2019t be asking me for anything. And look, I\u2019m a caring guy. If I get a girl pregnant and then abandon her, I don\u2019t want to leave her alone with a kid. Especially if she might chase me down for child support.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201cI&#8217;ve viewed accessible abortion as something my partners and I could reasonably rely on as a last resort. That security has informed my approach to sexual exploration and relationships.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates: \u201cI deserve to be free from any responsibility for some girl I get pregnant.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Pro-choice&#8221; man (<\/strong><strong>Shroff)<\/strong>: \u201cI admit I\u2019m scared of what eliminating access to abortion would mean for my own life.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>#ProChoiceMen<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> translates: \u201cThe other side will point out that abortion kills a human being. But my right to impregnate a woman and then leave her in the dust outweighs the baby&#8217;s right to life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his article, Shroff talks about \u201csafe sex\u201d and \u201csexual exploration\u201d as though the former were a true reality and the latter something that can and should be undertaken without regard for potential consequences. Apparently nobody ever told him the hard truth implied by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ProChoiceMen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and bluntly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Prolife_Sam\/status\/1450229287316041729\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">articulated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Prolife_Sam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samantha D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Twitter:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex is risky. Even with birth control, a child can be created. Welcome to adulthood where your actions have consequences. If you create a child, whether on purpose or accident, you are now a parent and should protect your child &#8211; not choose to kill them.
