Abortion pills comprised nearly 44% (43.7%, to be exact) of abortions reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2019,<\/a>\u00a0based on data from just 42 reporting areas.\u00a0According to the\u00a0CDC<\/a>, the data “excludes 10 reporting areas (California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York State, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) that did not report, did not report by weeks of gestation, did not meet reporting standards, or did not have medical abortion as a specific category on their reporting form.”<\/p>\n

Therefore,\u00a0the true abortion numbers are much higher than reported.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0CDC<\/a>, “During 2010\u22122019, 35 reporting areas (excludes Alabama, Arizona, California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) provided continuous data and included medical abortion on their reporting form. Among these 35 areas, use of early medical abortion increased 10% from 2018 to 2019 (from 37.5% of abortions to 41.1%) and 123% from 2010 to 2019 (from 18.4% of abortions to 41.1%).”<\/p>\n

Guttmacher abortion pill data for 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n

Data published by Planned Parenthood’s former \u201cspecial affiliate<\/a>,\u201d the Guttmacher Institute, which tends to collect more comprehensive data than the CDC, has not been updated since\u00a0\u00a02017<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, in that year, Guttmacher estimated that the abortion pill<\/a> was used for nearly 40% of all abortions.<\/p>\n

Abortion pill costs<\/strong><\/p>\n

Live Action News estimates<\/a> that the abortion industry is grossing nearly $200 million annually in abortion pill sales\u00a0\u2014 twice as much money as initially\u00a0projected<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 with Planned Parenthood alone taking in approximately half of the sales.<\/p>\n

Guttmacher previously\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c[i]n 2014, the average amount paid for an abortion with local anesthesia in a nonhospital setting at 10 weeks\u2019 gestation was $508. The average paid for an early medication abortion (up to nine weeks\u2019 gestation) was $535.\u201d<\/p>\n

A June 2021 report by\u00a0Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) states<\/a> that while abortion pill manufacturer “Danco Laboratories does not make the cost of Mifeprex public,\u00a0providers<\/a>\u00a0report that Mifeprex costs them around $90 a pill.”<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood\u2019s abortion pill sales<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a recent\u00a0webinar on so-called \u2018no-test abortion<\/a>,\u2019 Gillian Dean, MD, then Director of Medical Services at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, revealed that Planned Parenthood provides \u201cabout half \u201d of all chemical abortions. This means that in 2017, Planned Parenthood likely committed 169,820 (50% of the 339,640 reported) chemical abortions (abortion pill) reported by Guttmacher. Multiplying this by the average cost of $535 each (note that in some areas clients are charged\u00a0hundreds<\/a>\u00a0more), it is likely that Planned Parenthood\u2019s abortion pill business tops more than $90 million annually ($90,853,700).<\/p>\n

FDA approval<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Population Council, a\u00a0eugenics-founded<\/a>\u00a0\u201cnon-profit,\u201d\u00a0brought<\/a>\u00a0the abortion pill (known then as RU-486) into the U.S. and\u00a0later<\/a>\u00a0set up<\/a>\u00a0the pill\u2019s manufacturer,\u00a0Danco Laboratories, LLC,<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0sub-licensee<\/a>\u00a0of the Population Council.<\/p>\n

In 2000, the FDA approved<\/a> the abortion pill Mifeprex (mifepristone) to be used in a regimen with the drug misoprostol<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By\u00a0April 2011<\/a>, due to several adverse events reports,\u00a0the FDA\u00a0determined<\/a>\u00a0that a safety system known as\u00a0REMS<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0necessary<\/em>\u00a0for mifepristone. In 2019, the FDA\u00a0approved<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0generic<\/a>\u00a0manufacturer of the abortion pill: GenBioPro, Inc.<\/p>\n

Abortion pill safety<\/strong><\/p>\n

A recent\u00a0analysis<\/a>\u00a0of adverse events\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0(AERs) submitted to the FDA by\u00a0abortion pill<\/a>\u00a0manufacturer Danco revealed that abortion pill clients experiencing a complication are more likely to receive care from an emergency center than from the abortion facility where they obtained the pills.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0results<\/a>\u00a0of a\u00a0recently released Telabortion study, which implemented more stringent safety requirements than would be seen in normal use, revealed that 6% of \u201cknown outcomes\u201d from the abortion pill were severe enough to result in emergency room or urgent care visits. That number appears to mirror\u00a0data<\/a>\u00a0from the UK.<\/p>\n

In the U.S., potentially\u00a020,380<\/strong>\u00a0women\u00a0per year<\/em>\u00a0are seeking care at an ER or urgent care facility after taking the abortion pill.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0a separate\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0which\u00a0analyzed<\/a>\u00a0Medicaid data within the 17 states that allow taxpayer funded abortions\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0that the rate of abortion-related ER visits for chemical abortions increased 507% from 2002-2015<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As of the writing of this article, the abortion pill is under an FDA safety program called the\u00a0Risk Evaluation and Mitigation System<\/a>\u00a0(REMS), which the\u00a0FDA<\/a>\u00a0can require \u201cfor certain medications with\u00a0serious safety concerns<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite these potentially serious incidents, under the leadership<\/a>\u00a0of then-FDA Commissioner Robert Califf<\/a>\u00a0in 2016, the FDA removed the requirement that Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro report abortion pill complications \u2014 and instead must only report deaths. The FDA also ruled that the abortion pill should remain under the REMS safety guidelines.<\/p>\n

Challenges to the REMS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, the abortion industry is seeking to lift the REMS on the abortion pill and expand its use through\u00a0self-managed<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0DIY abortion<\/a>. This process puts the responsibility of\u00a0seeing the remains of the child<\/a>\u00a0and the disposal of \u201cfetal remains\u201d squarely on the teenager or woman taking the pills.<\/p>\n

Additional schemes by abortion insiders involve\u00a0committing<\/a>\u00a0abortions past the approved FDA gestational age limit,\u00a0knowing the\u00a0failure rate<\/a>\u00a0of the abortion pill increases with gestational age<\/em>. In addition, they have proposed \u201cadvanced provision<\/a>\u201d of the pills before pregnancy, promoting unregulated online\u00a0abortion pill dispensaries<\/a>, and even\u00a0illegal distribution<\/a>\u00a0of the drug.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02017<\/a>, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a case (Chelius\u00a0v. Becerra<\/a>) to challenge the REMS on behalf of Hawaiian doctor\u00a0Graham T. Chelius<\/a>.\u00a0Then, in May 2020, the ACLU\u00a0filed<\/a>\u00a0a lawsuit on behalf of the pro-abortion<\/a> American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)\u00a0<\/strong>to suspend the FDA\u2019s REMS during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0July 2020<\/a>, U.S. District Judge\u00a0Theodore D. Chuang placed the in-person safety requirement under a preliminary injunction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then in\u00a0April of 2021<\/a>, the Biden Administration’s FDA temporarily enabled abortion pill distribution by mail during the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>.\u00a0The following month (May of 2021)<\/a>, a motion to stay the\u00a0Chelius<\/em>\u00a0case was enacted pending a final review by the FDA of the REMS.<\/p>\n

More recently, on November 3, 2021, a status\u00a0update<\/a>\u00a0was filed in the Chelius case, which indicated that the \u201cFDA\u2026 anticipates completing its review by December 16, 2021\u201d and the stay on the lawsuit was extended until January 14, 2022 to \u201cgive the Parties time to determine appropriate next steps in this litigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

FDA updates abortion pill data<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite requirements that deaths be reported regularly to the FDA, as of the writing of this article, the latest\u00a0published data<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0deaths<\/a>\u00a0from abortion pills was nearly three years old.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0December of 2018<\/a>, the FDA\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a024 deaths\u00a0associated with abortion pills since its approval but on December 16, 2021 the FDA\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0an updated \u201cPost-Marketing Adverse Events\u00a0Summary<\/a>\u201d\u00a0revealing that as of June 30, 2021, that number has now climbed to 26.* The report also tragically reveals that\u00a0the \u201cestimated number of women who have used [abortion pill] mifepristone in the U.S. for medical termination of pregnancy\u00a0through the end of June 2021 is approximately 4.9 million women.\u201d (Read more at Live Action News here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

*Editor’s Note: FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in women who took mifepristone. As of June 30, 2021, there were reports of 26 deaths of women associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal. The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient.
