The press release notes that the law &#8220;includes two major pro-life victories&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Requires medical professionals to provide life-sustaining care to children who survive a botched abortion.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Prohibits medical professionals who receive taxpayer-funded salaries from working for or contracting with abortion facilities.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This new law has the potential to shut down two abortion clinics in southwest Ohio<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>12\/9\/21<\/strong>: The Ohio House has passed legislation that will ensure that children who survive botched abortions will receive medical care and attention. <a href=\"https:\/\/search-prod.lis.state.oh.us\/solarapi\/v1\/general_assembly_134\/bills\/sb157\/PS\/02\/sb157_02_PS?format=pdf&amp;vcrmeid=37NLo3g0yG6aXplJ3nlQ&amp;vcrmiid=KLWddqIr60CjfOaBq0B90Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 157<\/a>, the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-senate-born-alive-botched-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed the Senate<\/a> in October and is now headed to the desk of Governor Mike DeWine.<\/p>\n<p>SB 157 stipulates stiff penalties for physicians who fail to provide lifesaving treatment to an infant who survives an abortion in a facility that is outside of a hospital. If the physician does not provide such care, the mother can sue for manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to limit taxpayer-funded abortions, the bill also\u00a0prohibits abortion providers from teaching at any school or institution affiliated with a state college or university. Finally, the bill requires that all instances of infants born alive after an abortion be reported to the Ohio Department of Health. Doctors who fail to fulfill the reporting aspect of the law face a third-degree felony.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was co-sponsored by Sen. Stephen Huffman.\u00a0&#8220;Ohio is a pro-life state. Senate Bill 157 is another step in our continued commitment to uphold the sanctity of human life,&#8221; he said in October, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/oh\/cleveland\/news\/2021\/12\/08\/-failed-abortion--bill-up-for-final-passage-in-ohio-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spectrum News<\/a>. &#8220;Regardless of what side of the abortion debate you are on, we can all agree that newborns deserve proper medical care and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eyT82gKjjNg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-trigger-abortion-roe-wade\/\">Ohio \u2018trigger\u2019 law would restrict abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One aspect of the bill that has drawn particular ire from abortion advocates is the stipulation that abortion providers must have no ties to state universities or colleges. According to the Ohio-based Center for Christian Virtue, this requirement could result in the closure of two abortion facilities,\u00a0Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio and Women&#8217;s Med Center in Dayton, since both rely on state-funded doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood\u00a0of Southwest Ohio Region\u00a0President and CEO Kersha Deibel admitted that the bill will impact her facility, as it will limit the doctors who can contract with them.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s appalling. This is a targeted effort to further stigmatize abortion with blatant disregard for the thousands of Ohioans\u2019 access to health care it could affect,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpo.com\/news\/local-news\/ohio-takes-powerful-step-to-restrict-abortion-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Christian Virtue Legislative Liaison Nilani Jawahar praised the legislation&#8217;s passage. \u201cPlanned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry proved yet again that they never truly cared about women&#8217;s health\u2014only their profits\u2014when they fought against this life-saving law,&#8221; she said in a statement. &#8220;Thankfully, the Ohio Legislature sent a strong message today that every child\u2019s life is valuable, no matter their size, ability, or location.
