{"id":258420,"date":"2021-12-07T08:50:51","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T14:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=258420"},"modified":"2021-12-06T17:17:47","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T23:17:47","slug":"malta-march-for-life-decriminalize-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/malta-march-for-life-decriminalize-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Malta hosts March for Life in the face of lawmakers&#8217; efforts to decriminalize abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/church.mt\/march-for-life-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Network Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hosted a March for Life in Valletta to promote the sanctity of human life, appealing to authorities in Malta and overseas to protect the preborn.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/malta-fights-attempts-decriminalize-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has previously reported, the predominantly Catholic country is the only member of the European Union where abortion is illegal, making exceptions for cases where the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-abortionist-abortion-is-never-medically-necessary-to-save-the-life-of-the-mother\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother\u2019s life is in danger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/malta-fights-attempts-decriminalize-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent MP Marlene Farrugia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, made it clear back in May that she wants to decriminalize abortion in the country, relying on similar arguments used to legalize abortion in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dont-believe-lie-making-abortion-illegal-will-cause-thousands-women-die\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under that guise that decriminalizing abortion somehow makes it safe. Farrugia referred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-replies-women-back-alley-abortions\/\">pervasive<\/a> &#8220;coat hanger&#8221; claim in her reasoning, though in fact it was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fooled-abortion-bans-didnt-thousands-deaths\/\">largely physicians<\/a> who committed illegal abortions in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Decriminalized abortion] should be there, so that you can do it in a decent, medical way,\u201d Farrugia claimed. \u201cSo you don\u2019t have to traumatize yourself in the process; so you don\u2019t have to end up doing it yourself, on your own, with a coat-hanger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, Farrugia also appeared to acknowledge the horror of abortion itself, citing sex education and easy access to birth control as a way to reduce the demand for it. Even if Farrugia\u2019s position stems from a sense of compassion for women, proposing violent solutions is not the answer to helping a woman through a challenging pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Flifenetworkeu%2Fposts%2F4712609655448853&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"616\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion deliberately ends the life of an innocent human being. Instead of treating women and their children like the problem, society should strive to welcome every life, not designate some lives for destruction while selectively sparing others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>READ:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to Farrugia\u2019s proposal, Life Network Foundation called it \u201ca blatant attempt to introduce abortion into Malta, allowing every pregnancy to be terminated by a mother or medical professional, and the baby in the womb destroyed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the March for Life, the Foundation\u2019s chairperson Miriam Sciberras said that Malta\u2019s pro-life law \u201csaves lives.\u201d The chairperson also said the country\u2019s pro-life law \u201cdefends the vulnerable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[O]nce again we\u2019re here for the March for Life after having cancelled it because of Covid\u2026 we\u2019re here to convey the message that we [must] continue safeguarding life from conception,\u201d Sciberras said in a statement to Newsbook.com.mt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Flifenetworkeu%2Fposts%2F4712579362118549&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"616\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citing the testimony of a woman who was initially abortion-minded before giving birth to a baby boy, Sciberras admitted during the march that some pregnancies may be difficult.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the chairperson declared that \u201cwe must help these people fight off the problem, not by eliminating life, but by being there for them and offer a network of help and solidarity that they find it easy to choose life\u2026 which is always better than choosing death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifenetwork.eu\/support\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Network Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers assistance to pregnant women facing an unplanned pregnancy or an adverse prenatal diagnosis.
