{"id":258352,"date":"2021-12-07T06:41:58","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T12:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=258352"},"modified":"2021-12-06T15:52:30","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T21:52:30","slug":"german-40-days-for-life-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/german-40-days-for-life-court\/","title":{"rendered":"German court to hear appeal of 40 Days for Life participants blocked from peaceful prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An administrative court in Mannheim, Germany, has agreed to hear the appeal of a group of 40 Days for Life participants in Pforzheim, Germany, who were banned from peaceful prayer demonstrations outside the Pro Familia \u201cabortion advisory center.&#8221; Pro Familia is a member organization of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/249748\/pro-lifers-win-right-to-appeal-ruling-on-german-municipality-s-prayer-vigil-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic News Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group <a href=\"http:\/\/40daysforlife.com\">40 Days for Life<\/a> is an internationally coordinated pro-life organization that, according to its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.40daysforlife.com\/en\/about-overview.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201caims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses.\u201d Twice a year, local chapters meet to pray outside abortion facilities and offer peaceful pro-life witness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participants of the prayer vigil in Pforzheim did not prevent anyone from entering the abortion building or from walking on the surrounding sidewalk and pavement. However, the abortion center did not want the group to meet outside the location and asked local police to monitor the group\u2019s activities. Local police found no violations. Regardless, the abortion center asked that the group be moved elsewhere. In 2019, the local municipality banned the group from meeting outside the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/40-days-for-life-20000-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>AMAZING: 40 Days for Life celebrates 20,000 babies saved from abortion<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is about more than our group in Pforzheim,\u201d said Pavica Vojnovi\u0107, the organizer of the local 40 Days for Life vigils. \u201cIt\u2019s about whether prayer-free zones are lawful, or whether one is allowed to represent different opinions in the public square. That is why we will continue fighting for this freedom.\u201d She later added, \u201cEvery life is valuable and deserves protection. I am shocked that we are being prevented from supporting vulnerable women and their unborn children in prayer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upcoming appeal is a most welcome development in an environment that is increasingly hostile to pro-lifers. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/german-court-to-hear-appeal-on-prayer-vigil-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADF International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the incoming German government has vowed to take action against \u201cpavement harassment by anti-abortion activists,&#8221; and there is concern that Pavica and other pro-lifers who want to pray and present real abortion alternatives to women could be criminalized under the coalition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe welcome the court\u2019s decision to hear Pavica Vojnovi\u0107\u2019s appeal,\u201d said ADF senior counsel Felix B\u00f6llmann. \u201cIt\u2019s encouraging that the court sees merit in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy prohibiting even silent prayer near an abortion organization, the Pforzheim authorities have gone beyond what could be considered reasonable or proportionate. Whether or not people agree with Pavica\u2019s views on the sanctity of life, everyone can support the importance of the fundamental rights to freedom of expression, religion, and
