My job was easy that day because Andrew has enough vivacity to count for <i>three <\/i>counselors on his own.<\/p>\n<p>Towards closing time, the pace of business started slowing down, and Andrew and I had the chance to introduce ourselves and talk. Someone there prompted Andrew to share his story with me, and I was intrigued. What followed was inspiring. Andrew has a lot to say about real manhood, faith, and men\u2019s role in the abortion issue.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Houston\u2019s gang scene, Andrew didn\u2019t have good influences in his life as a young man. By the age of 18, he had been in and out of jail, lost many friends to gang violence, and gotten two girls pregnant. \u201cThere are a lot of guys who joke about doing harm to their girlfriends if they ever get pregnant,\u201d Andrew says. \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking\u2026I know people who have paid for three or four abortions already. Guys don\u2019t know how to be responsible men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew turned his life around when, at the age of 20, he found God in his life. Since then, he has committed his time to helping men who were raised in the same atmosphere that he came out of. \u201cI heard this great saying,\u201d he says, \u201cthat it\u2019s not darkness that\u2019s the problem; it\u2019s the lack of light. Why aren\u2019t we going into the neighborhoods and teaching people out here?\u201d Well, that\u2019s exactly what Andrew is doing.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that men have a special role in turning the culture of death into a culture of life: \u201cAs men, we were created to be leaders. We need somebody to show us by example. These men out here, I don\u2019t blame them for being how they are. It\u2019s the lack of light that\u2019s in these neighborhoods. We have to equip these men with more knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26244\" style=\"margin-left: 15px; margin-right: 15px;\" alt=\"Andrew Lozano2\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Andrew-Lozano25-300x284.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Andrew-Lozano25-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Andrew-Lozano25.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>When asked <i>how <\/i>to reach the men at abortion facilities, Andrew didn\u2019t miss a beat: \u201cThere\u2019s a saying in the hoods: <i>real recognize real.<\/i> The men can see that I\u2019m not a fake, I\u2019m not a phony. They know I\u2019m out there because I have a heart.\u201d He continued, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to holler at them, but you want to speak to them with authority. I speak to them like I know them, like we\u2019re friends. I\u2019m not going to bombard them. I\u2019m going to come at them and say I want to bless them, so I know that once I do that the Lord will start speaking to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew knows that, as a man, he has a special role as a counselor at the abortion clinics. He has an insight into the thoughts and experiences that the fathers, brothers, husbands, and boyfriends are experiencing. He says, \u201cI don\u2019t talk to them like they\u2019re kids, I don\u2019t talk to them like they\u2019re my sons, I don\u2019t talk to them like a little brothers. I talk to them like men. They want to be respected, not disrespected or talked down upon. If anything, they\u2019re looking for love.&#8221; He says, &#8220;I think it is very, very effective for men to be counseled by men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a father himself, Andrew knows the struggles and joys of parenthood: \u201cI want to bless them and introduce them to a new way of life. I was there\u2026 They can\u2019t say that I don\u2019t understand. Ads and articles on the news make you feel like children will ruin your life. No, homey, a baby will make your life <i>start<\/i>!
