Other data from the Guttmacher Institute shows that teen abortions have been in decline since 2008.\u00a0The good news? For the past several years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-rate-lowest-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion rate<\/a> among all women 15-44 has been in decline. The bad news? New\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-data-abortion-numbers-increasing-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC 2019 data<\/a> indicates that the rate may be ticking upward, due in part to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/data-abortion-pill-ended-5-million-babies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">easy abortion pill access<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_259485\" style=\"width: 623px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-259485\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-259485\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Abortion-rate-declining-among-women-15-to-44-Graph-Guttmacher.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Characteristics of abortions show abortion rate declining among women 15 to 44 (Graph: Guttmacher Institute)\" width=\"613\" height=\"471\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-259485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Characteristics of abortions clients show abortion rate declining among women 15 to 44 (Graph: Guttmacher Institute)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CDC abortion data is voluntarily gathered from a select number of states that require reporting. The most current\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-data-abortion-numbers-increasing-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion report<\/a>\u00a0published by the CDC\u00a0is for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-data-abortion-numbers-increasing-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019,<\/a>\u00a0but not all states collect data on the characteristics of abortion clients.\u00a0The second national reporting agency is the Guttmacher Institute, a former &#8220;special affiliate&#8221; of Planned Parenthood, which gathers more comprehensive abortion data than the CDC. Guttmacher&#8217;s published abortion numbers are from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-rate-lowest-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>, yet their information on characteristics of abortion clients are based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-20s-60-percent-abortions-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>\u00a0data \u2014 years behind the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Guttmacher researchers\u00a0Rachel K. Jones\u00a0and\u00a0Jenna Jerman also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> a report using 2014 data on abortions.\u00a0Below is what they show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most are women in their 20s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CDC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T3_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 report<\/a> drew its data from the 49 areas that reported abortion numbers by women\u2019s age, and found that women in their 20s accounted for the highest percentage of abortions (56.9%) and\u00a0had the highest abortion rates (37.6 abortions per 1,000 women).<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, while adolescents less than 15 years old made up <em>just 0.2%<\/em> of the overall abortion percentage, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T5_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounted<\/a> for the highest abortion ratio (873\u00a0abortions per 1,000 live births):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teens &lt;15 years \u2013\u00a00.2%<\/li>\n<li>Teens aged 15-19 \u2013 8.6%<\/li>\n<li>Women aged 20\u201324 years- 27.6%<\/li>\n<li>Women aged 25\u201329 years \u2013\u00a029.3%<\/li>\n<li>Women aged 30-34 years \u2013\u00a019.6%<\/li>\n<li>Women aged 35-39 years \u2013\u00a011%<\/li>\n<li>Women \u226540 years \u2013\u00a03.7%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_259755\" style=\"width: 814px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-259755\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-259755\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Teen-girls-had-lowest-percent-of-abortions-in-2019-Graph-CDC.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Teen girls had lowest percent of abortions in 2019 (Graph: CDC\/2019) \" width=\"804\" height=\"515\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-259755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teen girls had lowest percent of abortions in 2019 (Graph: CDC\/2019)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;From 2010 to 2019, abortion rates decreased among all age groups, although the decreases for adolescents (60% and 50% for adolescents aged &lt;15 and 15\u201319 years) were greater than the decreases for all older age groups,&#8221;\u00a0CDC\/2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This seems to line up with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-20s-60-percent-abortions-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous data<\/a>\u00a0from the Guttmacher Institute which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, more than half of all U.S. abortion patients \u2014 60% \u2014 were in their 20s, while 25% were in their 30s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The proportion of abortion patients who were adolescents declined 32% between 2008 and 2014,&#8221; a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher report<\/a> stated, adding that &#8220;&#8230; the proportion accounted for by 15\u201317-year-olds declined 44% over this period, and that among 18\u201319-year-olds dropped by 25%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most abortion clients have had a previous live birth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every woman who is pregnant is &#8220;already a mother&#8221; of a baby not yet born, but the CDC data indicates that,\u00a0&#8220;Six in 10 women who have abortions are already mothers, and half of them have two or more children,&#8221; NYT&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/12\/14\/upshot\/who-gets-abortions-in-america.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> claimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T8_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>, 45 areas reported previous live births to the CDC. Seven areas did not report (California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York State, and Wisconsin).<\/p>\n<p>Out of 629,898 abortions reported nationally to the CDC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T8_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 data<\/a> on previous live births accounted for 532,719 abortions in 2019. Out of that number, 318,704 (60%) had a previous live birth while 214,015 (40%) did not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 previous live birth: 24.5% (130,771).<\/li>\n<li>2 previous live births: 20.0% (106,764).<\/li>\n<li>3 previous live births: 9.2% (49,178).<\/li>\n<li>4 or more previous live births: 6.0% (31,991).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2014,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014\">data<\/a>\u00a0from Guttmacher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-20s-60-percent-abortions-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicated<\/a>\u00a0that 59% of women obtaining abortions had previously had a live birth.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-5-million-abortion-uncommon-moms-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>\u00a0reviewed a study which analyzed a population approximately 583 times\u00a0<em>larger<\/em>\u00a0than the sample used by Guttmacher. This study found that abortion among low-income women who have had previous children is \u201cexceedingly uncommon, if not rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most abortion clients are unmarried<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CDC data on the marital status of abortion clients in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T8_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a> comes from 42 reporting areas. Ten did not report (California, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York State, Washington, and Wyoming). It\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T7_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that\u00a0<strong>85.5%<\/strong>\u00a0(438,256) of women or teens who had an abortion in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T7_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a> were\u00a0<strong>unmarried<\/strong>, while\u00a014.5% (74,578) of abortion clients were married.\u00a0Married abortion clients had a lower abortion ratio\u00a0(number of abortions per 1,000 live births) then unmarried abortion clients (46 v\u00a0394).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hlFld-FullText\">Data <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compiled<\/a> by Guttmacher researchers for <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>\u00a0found that never-married women accounted for the largest proportion of abortions (45.9%) and had an abortion rate of 16.9 per 1000. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hlFld-FullText\">&#8220;Women cohabiting with but not married to their partners had the highest abortion rate: 31.0 per 1000. Between 2008 and 2014, declines in abortion were most pronounced for cohabitating women (39%) and lowest for married women (21%), although the latter group had a low abortion rate in both periods,&#8221; Guttmacher noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most abortion patients have had no prior abortions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though some women have more than one abortion in their lifetime, the typical abortion patient has never had one before,&#8221; NYTs recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes\/status\/1470858361163948032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T8_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>, 44 areas reported data on abortion clients with a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T8_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous abortion<\/a>&#8216; to the CDC. Eight areas did not report (California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York State, and Wisconsin). The 2019 data shows that \u201cthe majority of women (58.2%) had previously had <em>no abortions,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the CDC wrote.<\/p>\n<p>CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T9_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 data<\/a>\u00a0also breaks down as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One previous abortion &#8211;\u00a0125,716 (23.8%)<\/li>\n<li>Two previous abortions-\u00a055,669 (10.5%)<\/li>\n<li>Three or more previous abortions-\u00a039,792 (7.5%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 2020 study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2333392820941348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a>\u00a0in the Journal of\u00a0Health Services Research and Managerial Epidemiology\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-aborting-first-child-future-pregnancies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that aborting a first child makes a woman <em>more likely to abort<\/em> in future pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black women had the highest abortion percentage, rate, and ratio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CDC&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/ss\/ss7009a1.htm#T6_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>\u00a0report reveals that while Black Americans made up just 12.2% of the population, they accounted for 38.4% of the abortions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, &#8220;[no]n-Hispanic Black women had the highest abortion rate (23.8 abortions per 1,000 women) and ratio (386 abortions per 1,000 live births),\u201d CDC\/2019 also wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_259427\" style=\"width: 1218px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-259427\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-259427\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Abortion-data-by-race-ethnicity-and-population-percentages-CDC-2019.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion data by race ethnicity and population percentages CDC 2019 (Chart: Live Action News)\" width=\"1208\" height=\"223\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-259427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion data by race ethnicity and population percentages CDC 2019 (Chart: Live Action News)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CDC data on race and ethnicity were gathered from 30 reporting areas. Twenty-two were excluded (California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York City, New York State, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin).<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washpo-dishonestly-downplay-abortion-eugenics-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tethered to eugenics<\/a>, and the CDC&#8217;s 2019 data\u00a0confirms that communities of color, which have a disproportionate number of abortions, are still being <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a>\u00a0for eugenic abortions.\u00a0A detailed review of abortions by race and ethnicity can be viewed at Live Action News,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-communities-color-targeted-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black women account for most abortions committed later in pregnancy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/evidence-you-can-use\/later-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, Guttmacher claimed that &#8220;women with less education, Black women and [w]omen who had experienced multiple disruptive life events in past year&#8221; were more likely than others to have had an abortion at or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-pretends-100000-late-abortions-every-year-no-big-deal-theyre-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beyond<\/a>\u00a013 weeks\u2019 gestation.<\/p>\n<p>According to CDC data, out of\u00a0339,997 abortions reported by race\/ethnicity and gestation, 316,208 (93%) were committed from 0-13 weeks of pregnancy and 23,789 (7%) were committed at 14 weeks or greater.<\/p>\n<p>That data showed that in 2019:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>White women committed nearly 34% (106,533) of abortions between 0- 13 weeks of pregnancy and 31% (7,449) at 14 weeks or greater.<\/li>\n<li>Black women committed nearly 40% (120,121) of abortions between 0- 13 weeks of pregnancy and 42% (10,100) at 14 weeks or greater.<\/li>\n<li>Hispanic women committed nearly 21% (67,040) of abortions between 0- 13 weeks of pregnancy and 18% (4,378) at 14 weeks or greater.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Most had a low income<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that 75% of abortion patients were low income \u2014 49% living at less than the federal poverty level, 26% living at 100\u2013199% of the poverty level.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher researchers noted in their <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> that in 2014, &#8220;For the first time in 2 decades, <em>the abortion rate declined among women with incomes less than 100% the federal poverty level<\/em>. Still, the abortion rate for this group was the highest of all the groups examined, and the decrease in abortion was less pronounced than was that for higher income women.&#8221; They also noted that this group &#8220;had the highest abortion rate of all groups we examined; 36.6 per 1000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As income levels increased, the abortion rate decreased; women in the highest income group had an abortion rate less than half the national rate: 6.0 per 1000. Although abortion declined for all income groups between 2008 and 2014, poor women experienced the smallest decline (26%), and the declines grew greater with income,&#8221; Guttmacher&#8217;s researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC does <strong><em>not<\/em> <\/strong>report abortion characteristics based on income, education or religion.<\/p>\n<p><b>Most had at least a high school education<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 2014, 1 in 5 abortion patients (aged 20 years and older) had a college degree, and this group had the lowest abortion rate, 10.3 per 1000, compared with 14.2 to 20.0 per 1000 for the other education groups. Declines in abortion were steepest for women aged 20 years and older who <em>had not<\/em> graduated from high school (33%),&#8221; Guttmacher&#8217;s researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in their report.<\/p>\n<p>According to Guttmacher, in 2014,\u00a09% of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion patients<\/a>\u00a0aged 20 or older had less than a high school degree, and 91% had graduated from high school; more than one in five had a college degree.<\/p>\n<p><b>Most had some religious affiliation<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, Guttmacher\u00a0found that, most (38%) women getting abortions reported no religious affiliation. In addition, 24% were Roman Catholic, 17% were mainline Protestant, 13% were evangelical Protestant, and 8% were another affiliation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_259494\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-259494\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-259494\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Abortion-characteristics-by-religion-per-Guttmacher-Institute.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion characteristics by religion per Guttmacher Institute for 2014\" width=\"601\" height=\"598\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-259494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion characteristics by religion per Guttmacher Institute for 2014<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A closer review of data reveals a decline in abortions among <em>all religious groups<\/em> from what was reported in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The proportion of women who identified as mainline Protestant declined by 24% since 2008, whereas the proportion with no affiliation increased by 38%.
