A new study<\/a> released this week by the Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/a> adds weight to the growing body of evidence emphasizing the need for abortion pill safety protocols. The longitudinal cohort study<\/a> showed that the rate of abortion-related emergency room visits following a chemical abortion increased over 500% between 2002 and 2015 within the study population \u2014 which included women residing within the 17 states which provide Medicaid funding for abortion who were over 13 years of age, and had an abortion, followed by a trip to the ER within 30 days.<\/p>\n

Data also showed a drastic rise in the percentage of chemical abortions relative to total abortions: that ratio increased from 4.4% to 34.1% over the same period of time within the study population. This mirrors a similar <\/span>trend<\/span><\/a> within the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n

The study further found that women who had chemical abortions had a 22% greater risk of an ER visit for any reason, and a 53% greater risk of an ER visit for an abortion-related reason. The rate of ER visits for chemical abortions is growing faster than that of surgical abortions, according to the study\u2019s findings \u2014 for the study period, the rate of ER visits following a surgical abortion increased 315%, compared to 507% for chemical abortion. Furthermore, women who had a chemical abortion followed by a second abortion of any kind within the next year were more than twice as likely to require ER treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the study also found that many ER visits for abortion-related complications were miscoded as treatment for a spontaneous miscarriage<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

READ:\u00a0If the FDA removes abortion pill safety protocols, it won\u2019t be because the drug is safe<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is not unexpected, since women are often <\/span>advised<\/span><\/a> by abortion providers to tell ER doctors they are experiencing a natural miscarriage, should such intervention be necessary. However, this is extremely dangerous, as study co-author Dr. Donna Harrison <\/span>notes<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not telling the ER of a recent chemical abortion could lead to costly, painful, or even fatal mistakes.\u00a0 For example, a woman who had a recent chemical abortion will still have a positive pregnancy test. If the ER doctor does not see a pregnancy within her uterus, the doctor might take the woman for a completely unnecessary emergency surgery to look for an ectopic pregnancy. Chemical abortion drugs can also suppress the immune system. If the doctor doesn\u2019t know about a recent chemical abortion, the doctor will likely not be checking for the very subtle signs of a rapidly fatal infection associated with chemical abortion.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The data presented in this study is troubling for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the study period ended <\/span>before<\/span><\/i> restrictions were loosened in 2016, allowing women to take the abortion pill at home \u2014 so these study cases are ones wherein women received <\/span>more<\/span><\/i> counseling and supervision than they do currently. It is likely that the statistics for complication-related ER visits have increased since 2015.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, the FDA is currently considering <\/span>scrapping<\/span><\/a> the abortion pill\u2019s safety regulations altogether, leaving women on their own to self-assess gestational age (which data shows many get <\/span>wrong<\/span><\/a>) and try to navigate the maze of pre-existing conditions and other situations in which the abortion pill is <\/span>contraindicated<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women are likely to be harmed and may even\u00a0<\/span>die<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as a result.<\/p>\n

Dr. James Studnicki, the Charlotte Lozier Institute’s vice president of data analytics, <\/span>commented<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The increasing dominance of chemical abortion and its disproportionate contribution to emergency room morbidity is a serious public health threat, and the real-world data suggests the threat is growing. …\u00a0 It is therefore terrifying that the FDA is actively being pressured to eliminate longstanding public health safeguards on the abortion pill.\u00a0 This comprehensive data advocates for the FDA to strengthen, rather than weaken, medical oversight of chemical abortion.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The abortion pill was originally approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA in 2000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
