Activists from <\/span>Pro-Life San Francisco<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Rehumanize International<\/span><\/a> gathered on November 11 at the Alameda, California, offices of <\/span>Advanced Bioscience Resources<\/span><\/a> (ABR) to protest that organization\u2019s role <\/span>in the aborted fetal <\/span>experimentation<\/span><\/a> taking place at the University of California, San Francisco (<\/span>UCSF<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is ABR?<\/b><\/p>\n

ABR first came to the public\u2019s attention as a result of investigative journalism by the <\/span>Center for Medical Progress<\/span><\/a> (CMP), which <\/span>exposed<\/span><\/a> ABR\u2019s lucrative position as \u201cthe oldest continuously operating wholesaler of aborted fetal body parts in the United States.\u201d CMP revealed that ABR\u2019s annual revenue from the sale of aborted baby body parts \u2014 which they buy from individual abortion facilities, including many run by Planned Parenthood, then re-sell to taxpayer-funded research laboratories at an astronomical markup \u2014 runs in the millions per year, and is growing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Federal law prohibits profiting from the sale of fetal organs and tissues, and <\/span>ABR has been under scrutiny from the federal government since shortly after CMP\u2019s investigation was made public. <\/span>An inquiry by the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2016 led to ABR’s inclusion on a list of<\/span> criminal referrals<\/span><\/a>; in <\/span>2017<\/span><\/a>, an <\/span>FBI investigation<\/span><\/a> was opened. Members of <\/span>Congress<\/span><\/a> have <\/span>repeatedly<\/span><\/a> requested <\/span>updates<\/span><\/a> on that investigation, but no information has thus far been made publicly available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ABR\u2019s Relationship with UCSF<\/b><\/p>\n

UCSF receives <\/span>millions<\/span><\/a> of taxpayer dollars to <\/span>conduct<\/span><\/a> gruesome <\/span>experiments<\/span><\/a> involving fetal tissue and body parts. Past projects have included so-called \u201c<\/span>humanized mice<\/span><\/a>\u201d experiments. Many of the fetal body parts used in this \u201cresearch\u201d are obtained in-house from children aborted at the two UCSF-affiliated <\/span>Women\u2019s Options Center<\/span><\/a> locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, <\/span>records<\/span><\/a> obtained by Pro-Life San Francisco have also revealed a longstanding relationship between ABR and UCSF. Obtained records include actual invoices and pricing information <\/span>for aborted fetal remains including second-trimester<\/span> liver, thymus<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>pancreas<\/span><\/a> organs,<\/span> brain tissue<\/span><\/a>, and<\/span> heads<\/span><\/a>. Prices paid for fetal parts range from $390-$20,000 \u2014 all subsidized by taxpayers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unethical \u2026 and Unnecessary<\/b><\/p>\n

The \u201cresearch\u201d conducted using these fetal parts has no unique medical or scientific benefit to humanity. \u201cContrary to popular belief, fetal tissue from induced abortions is not necessary for research and the development of medical treatments,\u201d <\/span>states<\/span><\/a> Dr. Tara Sander Lee from the Charlotte Lozier Institute. \u201cIn fact, to date there have been no cures from abortion-derived human fetal tissue.\u201d She continues:<\/span><\/p>\n

Alarmingly, 20% of clinical trials using fetal stem cells [between 2010-2014] have been withdrawn, suspended, or terminated\u2014more than twice the rate seen for clinical studies using non-fetal stem cells. Contrast this to the over 5,800 successful clinical trials using non-fetal stem cells to treat diseases that are already advancing to phase II and phase III trials. There are several non-fetal tissue sources available to researchers that are saving lives <\/span>today<\/span> \u2026 but not one person is alive today because of stem cells from aborted fetal tissue.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Activists\u2019 Response<\/b><\/p>\n

Because of the gruesome, unethical, and unnecessary nature of fetal body part trafficking and the abortions which supply it, and because of ABR\u2019s pivotal role in this industry, activists from both the San Francisco Bay Area and across the nation staged a direct action on Thursday morning designed to raise local awareness about the human rights violations quietly transpiring in their own backyard. Coalition activists from across socio-political and religious spectrums entered the building where ABR\u2019s offices are located, chanting slogans and distributing informational flyers detailing the company\u2019s questionable practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterward, activists took to the streets outside. A 10\u2019 x 15\u2019 screen projecting images of aborted children and pro-life messages was set up immediately across the street from ABR\u2019s offices. Meanwhile, using 40\u2019-long purple banners spanning the full width of the two-lane streets reading \u201cTheir bodies are not property,\u201d and \u201cEnd fetal organ harvesting,\u201d the activists shut down traffic, first at Oak Street and Lincoln Avenue, then at Lincoln Avenue and Park Street \u2014 two of Alameda\u2019s principal downtown intersections \u2014 for approximately one hour and 30 minutes, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders from the organizations that planned the action addressed the crowd using bullhorns, noting the relative unimportance of a minor traffic delay compared to the human rights atrocities happening around the corner every day. At the same time, flyers explaining the reason for the action were distributed to drivers stuck in the traffic pileup, and individual activists engaged drivers and passersby in conversations about the unethical nature of fetal organ harvesting and the duty of every citizen to take a stand against it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about the strategy behind this particular action, <\/span>Kristin Turner<\/span><\/a>, Executive Director of Pro-Life San Francisco, said:<\/span><\/p>\n

People haven\u2019t been listening to us scream about [abortion and fetal trafficking] for the last two years, so we\u2019re going to stop them from getting their morning coffee and make them realize people are dying. Advanced Bioscience Resources has a checkered history when it comes to ethical and legal practices. Pro-Life San Francisco will not stop fighting until ABR stops pricing the body parts of children. Direct action is the only way we will stop these practices once and for all.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Similarly, Emma Jane Craig, one of the activists present on Thursday, explained that, after the CMP undercover videos were made public, she believed fetal body part trafficking would be brought to an end, and that she came to the protest because that had not yet happened. \u201cEnough is enough,\u201d she said. \u201cPro-life advocates have to turn up the heat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Herb Geraghty<\/span><\/a>, Executive Director of Rehumanize International, agreed:<\/span><\/p>\n

Today we were standing against the violent destruction of innocent life and speaking out against those who profit from it. Unethical and barbaric fetal tissue research is taking place across this country at places like UCSF and the <\/span>University of Pittsburgh<\/span><\/a> at taxpayer expense. It is long past time for these experiments to be put to an end.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Along the same lines, AJ Hurley, Executive Director of Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, stated:<\/span><\/p>\n

The battle against every human rights atrocity in America has been fought and won through non-violent direct action. Such action elicits a response \u2014 it may not always be pleasant, but silence is no longer an option. Members of this community must decide \u2014 either they think it’s okay for the organs of pre-born children to be cut out for profit in their backyard, or they must fight to end it. There is no middle ground. We demand that the citizens and government of Alameda shut down Advanced Bioscience Resources now.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

All involved groups indicated they will continue to stage similar actions until the killing stops.<\/span><\/p>\n
