What she found out instead was that she was pregnant with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/identical-twin-gives-birth-identical-twins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twins<\/a> \u2014 and her boys gave her the strength to fight for her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cassie had a normal childhood. \u201cMy plan for life was: go to college, get married, and have kids,\u201d she said on an episode of &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gCk7Yk6cgHw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Didn\u2019t Know I Was Pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; But when she was 13 years old, she found she had an aggressive form of leukemia. In the course of treatment, doctors told Cassie she would never be able to have children due to the damage caused by intensive chemotherapy. Although she was heartbroken, the treatment worked, and Cassie was glad to have a second chance at life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cassie relished this second chance, but she put on weight quicker than she ever had \u2014 likely due to steroids prescribed to her at the end of her chemotherapy treatment. When she was 22, her mother, a nurse, noticed Cassie was breathless after simply going from the kitchen to the living room and she thought the weight gain might actually be fluid retention, and indicative of a heart problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cassie was\u00a0also having difficulty breathing \u2014 she described a sensation of someone \u201cchoking\u201d her \u2014 and her mother rushed her to the ER. \u201cI just knew, being a nurse, that she was retaining fluid. And I did say to one of my kids, \u2018I think we have a heart problem.\u2019 I knew we needed to do something, and somebody needed to see her,\u201d Cassie\u2019s mother said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gCk7Yk6cgHw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the hospital, the doctors performed a variety of tests, including a standard procedure pregnancy test. When the test results came back, they showed Cassie had serious health issues: congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and pneumonia in one lung. On top of this, doctors delivered the shock of her life \u2014 the pregnancy test had come back positive. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was like, \u2018Are you serious?\u2019 \u2026 I never thought that I could be pregnant,\u201d Cassie said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A follow-up ultrasound showed she had not one, but <em>two<\/em> babies. \u201cI laid on a table, and I hear a heartbeat. And I start crying. I\u2019m like, \u2018I can hear a heartbeat, and it\u2019s not my heart!\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cassie was overwhelmed by the news and immediately concerned for her babies&#8217; wellbeing, as the ultrasound technician could not get an accurate gestational age. Yet Cassie didn\u2019t have much time to process the news. Her babies had to be delivered right away, her doctors said, or she would likely die. The pregnancy had put extra strain on her heart, weakened by chemotherapy, and her kidneys. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After putting Cassie into a medically-induced coma, doctors delivered her babies by C-section and immediately took them to the neonatal intensive care unit while Cassie\u2019s organs recovered in the coma. The babies were estimated to be around 34 weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When doctors woke her from her coma, Cassie\u2019s immediate concern was for her babies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mom-gives-birth-rare-twins-syndrome-theyve-little-gems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mom gives birth to rare twins with Down syndrome: \u2018They\u2019ve been my little gems\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey were so tiny, and they were so precious!\u201d she said. Cassie\u2019s days in the hospital recovering from her ailments were difficult, and she kept asking about her twin boys. \u201cI think if Cassie hadn\u2019t had the boys to live for, she wouldn\u2019t have lived,\u201d her mom told &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Didn\u2019t Know I Was Pregnant.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now recovered from her ordeal, Cassie is simply grateful\u2014. \u201cWhen I hold my kids, I don\u2019t realize what I\u2019ve been through. I just forget about everything that\u2019s happened in the past.
