{"id":255944,"date":"2021-10-27T14:46:32","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T19:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=255944"},"modified":"2021-10-28T13:57:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T18:57:44","slug":"portland-abortion-bereavement-leave-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/portland-abortion-bereavement-leave-employees\/","title":{"rendered":"Portland&#8217;s abortion &#8216;bereavement leave&#8217; for employees begs the question: Who died?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city of Portland recently amended its bereavement leave policy to allow city employees to take paid time off following any kind of pregnancy loss, including abortion, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2021\/10\/25\/portland-provides-bereavement-leave-for-employees-after-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irrespective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of whether deemed medically necessary.\u201d The city council unanimously approved the change. Portland is the first city in the nation to adopt this type of policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If &#8220;bereavement&#8221; is frequently defined as a period of grief or mourning after the death of a family member or loved one, and &#8220;bereavement leave&#8221; is time off of work that is granted to employees to mourn that death, then this amended policy begs the question:\u00a0<em>who died?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granting this type of leave following an abortion is a tacit admission of the humanity and family membership of the one who has been aborted \u2014\u00a0something abortion advocates almost never do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The policy change was inspired, in part, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-zealand-paid-leave-miscarriage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Zealand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s recently implemented program granting paid leave to women following natural pregnancy loss. Michelle Rodriguez, a senior policy advisor in Portland Commissioner Mingus Mapps\u2019 office, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2021\/10\/25\/portland-provides-bereavement-leave-for-employees-after-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she had been monitoring developments in New Zealand after hearing about many city employees taking vacation days and sick days following their pregnancy losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, she felt the policy needed to be taken a step further to incorporate abortion. One staffer Rodriguez spoke to had taken unpaid time off following her abortion. \u201cShe essentially took days without pay to deal with both her physical reaction to what ended up being a medical termination with her doctor\u2019s help and the emotional and psychological impact of what happened,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018OK, we need to figure out how to actually call this out and be proudly saying that this city wants to support families as they\u2019re going through this process.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new policy allows up to three days\u2019 bereavement leave after an abortion, miscarriage, or stillbirth. Abortion advocates were quick to applaud the change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/portland-authorities-try-fail-silence-pro-lifers\/\">Portland authorities again try and fail to silence pro-lifers<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrea Miller, president of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirhealth.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute for Reproductive Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an abortion advocacy group, said she believed the policy could help \u201cdestigmatize\u201d abortion. \u201cIt\u2019s important to recognize that employees need time to address their reproductive health needs &#8230; and they may need time to process what they\u2019re experiencing,\u201d Miller said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what, exactly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they experiencing?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Portland City Council is staunchly pro-abortion. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2021\/09\/14\/portland-walks-back-texas-boycott-as-response-to-abortion-ban\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to set aside $200,000 for \u201cabortion care\u201d to offset the effects of Texas residents who might happen to come to their city for that purpose; it also voted to ban business dealings with that state following the implementation of the Texas Heartbeat Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it is ironic that people on the pro-abortion side, which frequently refers to preborn children as \u201cpregnancies\u201d \u2014 processes rather than people \u2014 would pass legislation to grant paid time for mourning the deaths of <em>precisely those people whose humanity they deny<\/em>. If a life has not been ended, then what, exactly, is being mourned? And conversely, if mourning is necessary, then the death of someone whose life had value must have taken place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also ironic for the Portland City Council to vote to pay for bereavement leave following abortion on one hand, while paying to fund abortions on the other. Why vote to fund something that precipitates mourning, which requires yet more funding?
