{"id":255122,"date":"2021-10-14T16:37:34","date_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=255122"},"modified":"2021-10-13T21:46:58","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T02:46:58","slug":"guatemala-pro-life-geneva-consensus-declaration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guatemala-pro-life-geneva-consensus-declaration\/","title":{"rendered":"Guatemala joins pro-life Geneva Consensus Declaration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/breaking-guatemala-joins-pro-life-geneva-consensus-declaration\/\">C-Fam \u2014\u00a0Guatemala City<\/a>)\u00a0The President of Guatemala has added his country to the Geneva Consensus Declaration despite ongoing attempts of the Biden administration to harm the historic international pro-life agreement initiated by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery person has the right that their life be respected from the moment of conception until natural death,\u201d said Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei.<\/p>\n<p>In his address joining the declaration, Giammattei said attempts to declare abortion as an international right are \u201cabsurd and without any foundation in law, science or philosophy\u201d and that abortion was in fact the \u201cdenial of authentic human rights.\u201d He added that when international mechanisms try to impose obligations pertaining to abortion they engaged in unlawful \u201cinterference in the internal affairs of states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is a historic occasion where we celebrate the great Republic of Guatemala as the newest country signing and committing to the Geneva Consensus Declaration (GCD),\u201d said Valerie Huber. Huber the architect of GCD under the Trump administration delivered the opening statement during the presidential palace event in Guatemala City.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/geneva-consensus-declaration-english.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geneva Consensus Declaration<\/a> was launched in October 2020. The agreement joined by 35 countries representing 1.6 billion people declares that abortion is not an international right. It was adopted in a ceremony presided by then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Health and Human Service Secretary Alex Azar.<\/p>\n<p>In one of his first acts as president, Joe Biden withdrew the United States from the agreement. The U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/letter-revealed-announcing-u-s-withdrawal-from-pro-life-declaration\/\">sent letters<\/a> to the 34 other signatories notifying the U.S. withdrawal from the Geneva Consensus Declaration on February 12 and has subsequently worked to prevent the declaration from influencing ongoing social policy negotiations at the United Nations and other international organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement outlines four pillars for international cooperation among the signatories: women\u2019s health, the inherent dignity of the human person, the family as the natural and fundamental group unit of society, and the sovereign right of nations to make their own laws.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-board-std-experiments-prisoners\/\">Planned Parenthood board member aided in STD experiments on prisoners and mental patients<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Huber said the declaration, launched one year ago remains \u201cvital to strengthening the collective voice of nations and to prevent any country from being intimidated, bullied, or isolated simply for defending these values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Giammattei announced a comprehensive government policy to protect life and the family in July, including through Guatemala\u2019s foreign policy. The new initiative aligns with Guatemala\u2019s Constitution which recognizes \u201cthe State guarantees and protects human life from its conception, as well as the integrity and security of the person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huber told attendees at the signing ceremony that her mandate to launch a global agreement by like-minded countries came from President Trump\u2019s 2019 speech at the United Nations in which he denounced attempts by powerful countries and UN bureaucrats to impose an international right to abortion on the entire world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aware that many United Nations projects have attempted to assert a global right to taxpayer-funded abortion on demand, right up until the moment of delivery.\u00a0Global bureaucrats have absolutely no business attacking the sovereignty of nations that wish to protect innocent life,\u201d President Trump told the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p><i>Editor&#8217;s Note: Lisa Correnti writes for C-Fam. <a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/breaking-guatemala-joins-pro-life-geneva-consensus-declaration\/\">This article<\/a> first appeared in the Friday Fax, an internet report published weekly by C-Fam (Center for Family &amp; Human Rights), a New York and Washington DC-based research institute (<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/\"><i>https:\/\/c-fam.org\/<\/i><\/a><i>).
