{"id":254837,"date":"2021-10-08T10:38:39","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T15:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=254837"},"modified":"2021-10-07T16:50:17","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T21:50:17","slug":"pro-lifers-mobilizing-oppose-abortion-latin-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-lifers-mobilizing-oppose-abortion-latin-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-lifers mobilizing to oppose abortion across Latin America"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, Mexico City became enveloped in a sea of light blue as huge crowds of pro-lifers took to the streets to voice their opposition to the recent decriminalization of abortion by Mexico\u2019s Supreme Court. The ruling is the latest in a series of victories for abortion advocates, but pro-lifers have not abandoned the battleground for life and are rallying together to end the killing of preborn babies across Latin America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, a movement known as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/light-blue-wave-pro-life-movement-latin-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light Blue Wave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which uses the slogan, \u201cSave the Two Lives,\u201d exploded throughout Latin America. The movement began in Argentina in 2018 to mobilize the pro-life movement to fight against attempts to legalize abortion. They celebrated a major pro-life victory in August 2018 when the senate rejected the legalization of abortion by only a handful of votes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the issue of legalizing abortion was put back on the table following the election of President Alberto Fern\u00e1ndez in 2019. He had made legal abortion a focus of his campaign. In December 2020, Argentina legalized abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy. Abortion after the 14th week is permitted in cases of rape or when the mother&#8217;s health is at risk\u2014despite the fact abortion is never <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-replies-abortion-never-medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medically necessary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid continued attempts to loosen abortion restrictions across Latin America, pro-lifers are once again donning light blue kerchiefs and clothing, and gathering by the thousands to fight for life. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France24<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20211003-pregnant-teen-receives-ultrasound-on-stage-at-mexico-anti-abortion-rally\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that at least 10,000 pro-lifers assembled for the March for Life and Women on Oct. 3 in Mexico City. A 38-week-old pregnant woman underwent an ultrasound on stage to publicly show the presence of the life within her.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLegal or illegal, abortion must be out of the question, because women deserve so much more,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20211003-pregnant-teen-receives-ultrasound-on-stage-at-mexico-anti-abortion-rally\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alison Gonzalez, a Catholic activist and head of Steps for Life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The battleground for life goes beyond Mexico and Argentina. The Blue Wave is gaining momentum in large part due to an aggressive abortion agenda pushed by Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocacy groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Argentina<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the legalization of abortion at the beginning of the year, Argentina became the fourth country in Latin America to legalize abortion, joining Cuba, Guyana, and Uruguay. Many Argentinians opposed the move, indicating that politicians and legislators are not listening to the voices of the people. In fact, at that time, pollsters found that approximately 60% of the population <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/illegal-late-term-abortion-argentina\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposed legalizing abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The measure was met with condemnation from native Argentinian, Pope Francis, who\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2020\/12\/30\/abortion-legalized-argentina-pope-francis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hours before the senate session,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThe Son of God was born an outcast, in order to tell us that every outcast is a child of God. He came into the world as each child comes into the world, weak and vulnerable, so that we can learn to accept our weaknesses with tender love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Planned Parenthood Federation issued a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ippf.org\/news\/historic-moment-argentina-legalizes-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> celebrating the news as \u201ca historic decision by the Senate\u201d and congratulating themselves for their role in supporting the legalization of the killing of preborn children in a pro-life country, stating, \u201cIPPFWHR has nurtured an ecosystem of feminist organizations and activists for more than 15 years that contributed to make today possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While IPPFWHR claims to support women and girls, many women\u2014including underprivileged women\u2014fiercely opposed the legislation, fearing they would be pressured to abort. A number <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/impoverished-women-argentina-america-agree-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penned a letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Pope Francis saying they worried they would \u201cgrow old with the idea&#8230; that we don\u2019t have a right to have children because we are poor.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although abortion advocates often tout maternal mortality as a reason for legalizing abortion, the procedure is unsafe and extremely dangerous for women. (Photo by EITAN ABRAMOVICH \/ AFP) (Photo credit should read EITAN ABRAMOVICH\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/light-blue-wave-pro-life-movement-latin-america\/\">\u2018Light Blue Wave\u2019: How the pro-life movement is spreading across Latin America<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Chile<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chile has also begun <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/chilean-legislators-advance-bill-legalize-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the possibility of decriminalizing abortion. Several weeks ago, Chile\u2019s Chamber of Deputies approved a plan to debate a bill that would decriminalize abortion, allowing it for any reason up to 14 weeks. The bill was first introduced in January, just a month after Argentina\u2019s new law went into effect, but there are still many legislative hoops to clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the legislation&#8217;s approval, Chile&#8217;s Catholic Bishops expressed their disappointment, issuing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/church\/news\/2021-09\/bishops-in-chile-decry-new-abortion-bill.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emphasizing that \u201cunconditional respect for human life should always guide any ethical, legislative, human and health consideration when facing the reality of unwanted pregnancies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until recently, Chile was one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31885442\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> countries disallowing abortion under any circumstance. However, in September 2017, abortion became legal in cases of rape, \u201cmother\u2019s health,\u201d or a child&#8217;s fatal diagnosis. In September 2018, when Chile began to consider legalizing abortion until 14 weeks, pro-life Chileans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thebridgehead.ca\/2018\/09\/14\/light-blue-kerchief-wave-showing-pro-life-support-spreads-in-south-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rallied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to oppose the move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands gathered as a Blue Wave in front of the National Palace, and today, Chileans remain strongly pro-life despite continued pressure from abortion advocates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dominican Republic<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-dominican-republic-pressure-legalize-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to abandon pro-life laws has not escaped the Dominican Republic\u2014one of a handful of Latin American countries where abortion has been illegal in all circumstances. Earlier this year, the United Nations Development Program began pressuring the nation to legalize abortion when a woman\u2019s life is in danger, when serious fetal deformations are present, or in cases of rape or incest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, thousands of Dominicans, many carrying light blue flags and kerchiefs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/car-caravan-dominican-republic-pro-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flooded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the capital after traveling by caravan to stand up for \u201cthe two lives.\u201d During the protest, the pro-lifers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariolibre.com\/actualidad\/caravana-celeste-por-la-vida-expresa-frente-al-congreso-su-rechazo-a-las-tres-causales-IC25270787\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a manifesto, \u201cNothing and nobody can legalize the death of a human being, be it fetus or embryo, child or adult, old or sick, incurable or dying.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was not the first time the country\u2019s strong pro-life position was challenged. In December 2014, President Danilo Medina <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reproductiverights.org\/dominican-republic-constitutional-court-repeals-abortion-law\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the country\u2019s amended Penal Code, allowing abortion in those three situations. Soon afterwards, pro-life groups filed an appeal, and the amendment was ruled unconstitutional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Dominican Republic continues to face pressure to amend abortion laws, abortion remains illegal in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ecuador<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragically, Ecuador is among the countries loosening abortion restrictions. Earlier this year, Ecuador\u2019s Constitutional Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ecuadors-constitutional-court-decriminalizing-abortion-rape\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in favor of decriminalizing abortion in cases of rape. Previously, abortion was only allowed in cases where the mother\u2019s health was at risk. There were several decriminalization\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ecuador-protect-preborn-disabilities-conceived-rape\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there in the past, but all were unsuccessful\u2014until now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecuador\u2019s bishops had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/247453\/ecuadorian-court-approves-decriminalizing-abortion-in-cases-of-rape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Constitutional Court arguing that rape is not solved by abortion, noting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe rapist must be treated with the maximum rigor of the law, especially if he is someone close to the victim, such as a relative, a friend, or an acquaintance. Otherwise, impunity for the aggressor would be favored. Furthermore, there is not a single woman in prison for abortion; much less if she were a teenager, who has another juridical process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vote came after an insidious Planned Parenthood\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-exploits-rape-survivors-ecuador-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propaganda effort<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0manipulate people into supporting the repeal of existing pro-life laws and changing opinions on abortion in cases of rape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, Ecuador has been solidly pro-life. During recent court proceedings regarding the abortion law, pro-lifers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/5\/7\/ecuador-abortion-rights-victory-hailed-as-latest-in-tidal-wave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in huge crowds to denounce the court\u2019s decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/car-caravan-dominican-republic-pro-life\/\">Thousands participate in Dominican Republic car caravan to stand for pro-life laws<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Guatemala<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most abortions remain illegal in Guatemala with exceptions to \u201csave the life of the mother.\u201d However, that didn\u2019t stop Planned Parenthood from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guatemalan-president-keep-planned-parenthood-out\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to set up shop. In November 2020, the Guatemalan government\u2019s Official Gazette published the ministerial decision 231-2020 authorizing Planned Parenthood Global Guatemala LLC, a foreign nonprofit, to open a local chapter in Guatemala. An uproar ensued, prompting President Alejandro Giammatei to issue a new ministerial decision overriding its authorization to operate in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite enormous pressure from Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates, Guatemala has largely remained pro-life. When abortion activists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/light-blue-wave-pro-life-movement-latin-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tried<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to overturn pro-life laws last year, the Blue Wave descended and over 20,000 Guatemalans marched in support of life. In 2017, the Guatemalan military also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-guatemala-abortion-idUSKBN163080\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blocked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Dutch ship operated by Women on Waves when it was learned the ship was transporting Guatemalan women into international waters for abortions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-guatemala-abortion-idUSKBN163080\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that one Guatemalan citizen called out to the crew, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you go to the Netherlands to kill children?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_188402\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188402\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-188402\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chile-megaphone-heartbeat-pro-life-700x389.jpg\" alt=\"pregnant\" width=\"612\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chile-megaphone-heartbeat-pro-life-700x389.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chile-megaphone-heartbeat-pro-life-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chile-megaphone-heartbeat-pro-life-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chile-megaphone-heartbeat-pro-life-500x278.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chile-megaphone-heartbeat-pro-life.jpg 902w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-188402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Twitter<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the country\u2019s long pro-life history, Mexico&#8217;s Supreme Court voted last month to decriminalize abortion. Abortion was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mexico-supreme-court-decriminalizes-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> legal up to 12 weeks in Mexico City as well as in several states, but has been banned elsewhere. Courts can no longer prosecute abortion cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life groups had been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lpHMEUp8hno\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demonstrating and praying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outside the Court, urging the justices to choose life for preborn children, and shouting, \u201cYes to life, no to abortion.\u201d They wore light blue clothing and carried light blue flags. Some painted light blue hearts on their hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One protestor told reporters, \u201cWe cannot support a law that does not seek the common good. Laws are there to seek the common good, not at the expense of an individual interest, which is that of the unborn and defenseless. Unfortunately, we are moving in that direction, but we hope that this can be reversed and open new paths for the good of all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this ruling, legislation to fully legalize abortion was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mexico-supreme-court-decriminalizes-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abandoned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this year, with Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador refusing to allow the legislation to receive a full vote. However, pro-lifers fear that decriminalizing abortion will pave the way for full legalization in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As abortion activists continue to relentlessly push for further legalization and push for abortion in every corner of Latin America, pro-lifers are proving they will never give up the fight to protect the right to life.
