One Catholic Bishop <\/span>has come out strongly<\/span><\/a> against an abortion bill, and he\u2019s not holding back, calling it \u201cchild sacrifice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, issued a <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a> that many view as a rebuke of Nancy Pelosi, who hails from the Archbishop\u2019s diocese.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill addressed in Cordileone\u2019s statement is the \u201cWomen\u2019s Health Protection Act\u201d (<\/span>HR 3755<\/span><\/a>), which passed the House last week<\/a>. The bill would recognize a \u201cstatutory right\u201d to abortions, and would do away with conscience protections for health care workers who do not wish to participate in life-ending procedures.The bill would also prohibit almost any kind of limitation on abortion such as waiting periods and ultrasounds, and would prevent states from restricting abortion. Its political opponents have aptly labeled it the “Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Archbishop did not mince words. \u201cAny reasonable person with a basic sense of morality and inkling of decency cannot but shudder in horror at such a heinous evil being codified in law,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is especially shameful that any self-professed Catholic would be implicated in such an evil, let alone advocate for it. […] This proposed legislation is nothing short of child sacrifice, and clearly in reaction, among other things, to the recently passed Texas Heartbeat bill. \u00a0[\u2026] Indeed, HR 3755 is surely the type of legislation one would expect from a devout Satanist, not a devout Catholic.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the vote on the bill shortly after the <\/span>Texas Heartbeat Act<\/span><\/a> came into force at the beginning of September, and\u00a0<\/span>delivered remarks<\/span><\/a> in support of the bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pelosi has many times spoken \u201cas a Catholic\u201d while opposing the Catholic Church\u2019s belief in the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. According to the <\/span>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/span><\/a>, the Church teaches that abortion, the intentional taking of the life of a preborn baby, is \u201cgravely contrary to the moral law,\u201d a teaching which \u201chas not changed and remains unchangeable.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pope Francis has likewise recently made the teaching of the church clear, reiterating a point earlier this month that he initially raised in 2018 \u2014 namely, that procuring an abortion is akin to <\/span>hiring a hitman<\/span><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a homicide,\u201d he said, according to <\/span>The Pillar<\/span><\/a>. \u201cNo middle terms. Whomever does an abortion, kills.\u201d Cordileone referenced these remarks in his statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But in spite of her bishop\u2019s highly publicized statements, Pelosi responded with nonchalance when asked about his remarks regarding the killing of innocent human beings. “It’s not our business how other people choose the size and timing of their families,” Pelosi said to reporters, according to <\/span>Newsweek<\/span><\/a>. “What business is it of any of us to tell anyone else what to do?”<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Reuters, the legislation is <\/span>unlikely to pass<\/span><\/a> the Senate, but abortion advocates in Congress are likely to remain undeterred in their attempts to codify Roe v. Wade<\/em> into federal law.<\/span><\/p>\n
