Recent reports about fetal experimentation at the University of Pittsburgh have prompted nearly 100 members of <\/span>Congress<\/span><\/a> to demand a thorough review of the university\u2019s federally-funded research practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The call for an investigation was made in a <\/span>letter<\/span><\/a> directed at Attorney General Merrick Garland, Department of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, and National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins. In it, the lawmakers raised concerns about allegations regarding Pitt\u2019s methods for procuring aborted body parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The letter also requested that the Biden-Harris administration officials respond by October 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are alarmed by public records obtained by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which show that the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) may have violated federal law by altering abortion procedures to harvest organs from babies who were old enough to live outside the womb,\u201d the letter reads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Public records released last month by <\/span>Judicial Watch<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>The Center for Medical Progress<\/span><\/a> included a $3 million grant application the university submitted to <\/span>NIH<\/span><\/a> to become a \u201cfetal distribution hub\u201d for the <\/span>GenitoUrinary Developmental Molecular Anatomy Project (GUDMAP)<\/span><\/a>. On its Tissue Hub website, <\/span>GUDMAP<\/span><\/a> describes \u201cisolat[ing] human genitourinary tissues\u201d from children aborted between six and 24 weeks gestation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the application, Pitt presented itself as an ideal candidate for supplying NIH researchers with fetal tissue, emphasizing that it had \u201cover 18 years of experience\u201d collecting aborted body parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The part of the application that has raised particular alarm is Pitt\u2019s<\/a> claim that during the process of harvesting fetal organs, \u201cIschemia time is minimized.\u201d According to the NIH<\/a>, this refers to \u201cthe time a tissue, organ, or body part remains at body temperature after its blood supply has been reduced or cut off but before it is cooled or reconnected to a blood supply.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As <\/span>Fox News<\/span><\/a> reported, Pitt has \u201cvehemently denied\u201d its definition of ischemia time means that researchers are extracting organs from live fetuses<\/em><\/strong>. In a separate <\/span>Fox News<\/span><\/a> report, however, multiple OB\/GYNS, including one who worked at Planned Parenthood and considers herself \u201cpro-choice,\u201d stated \u201cthere is no question\u201d that infants were alive during organ harvesting<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>Pitt<\/span><\/a> recently hired the law firm Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C to review its fetal practices, the outlet expressed concern with the investigation. <\/span>Ryan Navarro<\/a>, a former University of Pittsburgh Medical Center therapist, told Fox News that one of the firm\u2019s attorneys is <\/span>Michael Heesters<\/span><\/a> – an alumnus of the university\u2019s school of pharmacy. Navarro requested in a letter that Pitt choose another law firm, noting that Heesters has a \u201cvested interest in protecting the integrity of the university.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The outlet also pointed out that Pitt has yet to explain how it obtains the fetal tissue used in its experiments. Members of the university and the law firm it hired, however, declined to answer questions from Fox News about whether the independent investigation would include \u201cprobing UPMC\u2019s practices.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If anything, this means lawmakers must continue pushing for a more thorough investigation instead of trusting Pitt to hold itself accountable for its unethical fetal experiments.<\/span><\/p>\n
