Argentina\u2019s National Academy of Medicine has blasted the country\u2019s 2020 legalization of abortion as signaling \u201cthe decline of the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In December 2020, upon the <\/span>initiative of President Alberto Fernandez<\/span><\/a> and with funding <\/span>from Planned Parenthood<\/span><\/a>, the Argentine government enacted the legalization of abortion on demand up to 14 weeks gestation, as Live Action News\u00a0<\/span>reported<\/span><\/a>. Abortion after 14 weeks is allowed under the law in cases of rape or threat to the life or health of the mother (even though abortion is <\/span>never medically necessary<\/span><\/a>). The official decree regulating the law was published on August 15, according to <\/span>ACI Prensa<\/span><\/a>, which prompted the National Academy of Medicine to issue its <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a> two weeks later, on August 31.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the statement, which was issued by the group\u2019s board of directors, the National Academy of Medicine group asserted that it \u201chas the obligation to alert society, institutions and professionals\u201d about any laws that are \u201cagainst the fundamental principles of medical practice, of ethics and of the defense of life.\u201d The group blasted the abortion law\u2019s \u201cdisregard for ethics, laws, regulations, religions, human rights, [and] the value of life\u201d and also noted that the law \u201cshows an attitude contrary to international documents signed by the country\u201d \u2014 a statement likely referring to Argentina\u2019s ratification of the <\/span>American Convention on Human Rights<\/span><\/a>, which affirms that life must be respected \u201cfrom the moment of conception.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Academy of Medicine document also sharply criticized the law\u2019s curtailing of conscience protections for pro-life physicians, arguing that physicians should not be forced to commit or refer for a practice they consider \u201cagainst their freedom of conscience and their ethical principles.\u201d The statement calls to mind the example of Hippocrates, \u201cthe father of medicine,\u201d whose Hippocratic Oath \u201cprohibited doctors from performing abortions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fernandez administration has been encroaching upon the conscience rights of pro-life physicians since President Fernandez took office, and even before the legalization of abortion on demand. As Live Action News <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a>, within his first week in office, the president issued a revised set of abortion protocols designed to make it harder for physicians to opt-out of committing or referring abortions in the cases of rape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The group also pointed out that the law allows a 14-year-old girl to \u201crequest an abortion without knowledge and endorsement of their parents,\u201d and lamented that \u201cthe entire text of the law and its regulations advocate the establishment of a situation of free abortion in society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Argentina\u2019s abortion law continues to be subject to <\/span>litigation<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>challenges<\/span><\/a> by pro-lifers, who argue that the law is unconstitutional and also violates the country\u2019s international agreements. Yet abortion activists in other Latin American nations have sought to follow Argentina\u2019s lead to push abortion in other countries. In Chile last month, abortion activists advanced a bill to the lower chamber\u2019s floor that would legalize abortion on demand up to 14 weeks, similar to Argentina\u2019s law. Earlier this month, abortion activists in Mexico also heralded <\/span>a Mexican Supreme Court ruling<\/span><\/a> that decriminalized abortion in the traditionally pro-life country.<\/span><\/p>\n
