Dr. Daniel Grossman<\/a>, an abortionist<\/a>\u00a0with ties<\/a> to an organization recently funded by the abortion pill’s manufacturer, has been busy promoting the unapproved and dangerous idea that abortionists should give women the abortion pill before<\/em> they are even pregnant.<\/p>\n

Grossman currently serves\u00a0\u00a0as\u00a0senior adviser<\/a>\u00a0at Ibis Reproductive Health which \u2014\u00a0as recently as 2020 \u2014\u00a0was directly<\/em>\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by the abortion pill’s manufacturer,\u00a0Danco Laboratories<\/a>\u00a0and is currently funded<\/a> by the Packard Foundation, a large investor in Danco.\u00a0Grossman’s latest scheme to expand<\/a>\u00a0the use of the abortion pill has been dubbed “advanced provision of medication abortion.”<\/p>\n

Grossman laments FDA safety protocols as “out of touch,” while pushing for \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In February of 2019, Grossman began “mixed-methods study”\u00a0entitled “Advanced Provision of Medication Abortion<\/a>” which sought to follow “a prospective cohort of participants receiving Mifeprex\u00ae (mifepristone) by a clinician in advance<\/em> of a potential unintended pregnancy.”\u00a0What this 2019 trial proves is that the push for over-the-counter (OTC) and “advanced provision” of the abortion pill had nothing to do<\/em> with the Texas Heartbeat Act (SB8), which did not take effect<\/a> until 2021.<\/p>\n

The so-called “pilot study” was sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where Grossman works (heavily funded by Danco investors). It enrolled zero patients, but initially intended to measure the “feasibility of implementing a larger randomized controlled trial” until it was swiftly withdrawn. A reason for the withdrawal was not specified.<\/p>\n

Grossman recently resurrected the idea in a\u00a0tweet<\/a>\u00a0to his followers, where the former\u00a0NARAL board member<\/a>\u00a0wrote, \u201cAdvance provision of medication abortion means giving or getting the pills (mifepristone and misoprostol) in advance of need \u2014 before an unwanted pregnancy….\u201d<\/p>\n

In the same\u00a0Twitter thread<\/a>, he wrote, \u201c[\u2026]there are some people who are not good candidates… including those taking blood thinners or who have a bleeding disorder.\u201d\u00a0Hemorrhage<\/a>\u00a0during the process of expelling the preborn\u00a0child<\/a>\u00a0is a potential\u00a0complication<\/a>\u00a0of the abortion pill regimen. Grossman later specified that women at risk of ectopic pregnancy and other conditions are not a “good option” either.<\/p>\n

Despite the dangers, the abortionist is going full speed ahead with promoting this\u00a0dangerous<\/a> scheme, even spelling out how it could be done \u2014 in direct violation of the FDA’s REMS safety protocol.<\/p>\n

Writing<\/a>\u00a0in the LA Times, Grossman stated,\u00a0“The idea is simple: Give women abortion pills\u00a0before<\/i>\u00a0they need them \u2014 ‘advance provision,’ as it\u2019s known \u2014 so that they can take them as soon as they discover a pregnancy. Women could get the pills from their gynecologist at the time of their annual exam, say, or the pills could be made available online.”<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s at least one significant obstacle, however. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved abortion pills for advance provision,” Grossman added. “The agency doesn\u2019t even allow clinicians to prescribe mifepristone, one of the two drugs that make up medication abortion, for pick-up at a pharmacy.”<\/p>\n

He then claimed that the FDA’s safety requirements are “out of touch with patient preferences and\u00a0medically unnecessary.”\u00a0Conveniently, the research Grossman used to cite his claims just happened to be co-authored by him<\/em>\u00a0and was funded by an investor in Danco, the abortion pill manufacturer.<\/p>\n

The devil’s in the details of a survey on women and the abortion pill\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Grossman cited<\/a> a survey<\/a>\u00a0of 7,000 women (between the ages of\u00a018\u201349) conducted to determine the “personal interest in and general support for… [abortion pills] (1) in advance from a doctor for future use, (2) over-the-counter (OTC) from a drugstore and (3) online without a prescription.”<\/p>\n

The survey<\/a> found that\u00a0less than half of the 7,000 participants (49%) supported these ideas and he claims that 30% “were personally interested in one or more of the three access models; 44% supported advance provision, 37% supported OTC access, and 29% supported online access.” Interestingly, only 24% of the total number of survey participants were under the age of 30 \u2014 with the largest number of participants over<\/em> the age of 40.<\/p>\n

The survey was funded in part by the\u00a0The David and Lucile Packard Foundation (which invested\u00a0$14.2 million<\/a>\u00a0to start Danco in its early days and now invests<\/a>\u00a0millions in the generic<\/a> manufacturer,\u00a0GenBioPro, Inc.<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Money from\u00a0the DeMartini Family Foundation (led by<\/a>\u00a0Planned Parenthood New York Board Member<\/a>, Jennifer “Jenny” l. Brorsen as well as Richard M. DeMartini) also funded Grossman’s survey. The Foundation\u00a0funds<\/a>\u00a0the ACLU, Center for Reproductive Rights, Guttmacher Institute, Physicians for Reproductive Health, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, UCSF, Ibis, and other pro-abortion organizations. The couple<\/a> personally funds<\/a> Planned Parenthood and recently\u00a0attended<\/a>\u00a0a Planned Parenthood of New York City gala.<\/p>\n

Additional support for the survey was provided by Fidelity Charitable and an “anonymous foundation.”\u00a0Grossman ironically\u00a0serves<\/a>\u00a0on the editorial board of\u00a0Contraception, the journal in which he publishes much of his research, including this survey.\u00a0Contraception is the official journal of the Society of Family Planning (SFP), founded<\/a>\u00a0with a \u201cgenerous contribution\u201d from the Packard Foundation. It\u00a0receives<\/a>\u00a0millions from the Buffett Foundation (as in billionaire Warren Buffett), another Danco investor.<\/p>\n

Unlike more reputable publications, Contraception regularly fails to require that the authors of abortion studies disclose all their funding sources, while permitting them to claim there is no conflict of interest in their research. Yet, in other studies<\/a> where Grossman cited an “anonymous” funding source and was challenged, it turned out<\/a> to be the Buffett Foundation.<\/p>\n

Authors of the survey include Grossman<\/a>, M. Antonia Biggs, Sarah Raifman (who\u00a0previously worked for the\u00a0Population Council<\/a>, which brought the abortion pill to the U.S. and set up Danco), Diana G. Foster, and Lauren Ralph (scholar<\/a> for UCSF’s Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health \u2014BIRCWH<\/a> \u2014\u00a0funded in part by the NIH<\/a>, and\u00a0opposes<\/a> parental consent laws for adolescents in abortion, calling them “unfounded ideas”).\u00a0All are\u00a0closely connected<\/a> to\u00a0Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH<\/a>). The organization\u00a0publishes<\/a>\u00a0workbooks on abortion training, and\u00a0openly\u00a0promotes<\/a> self-managed (DIY) abortion, illegal abortion pill websites, and later gestational limits, in direct violation of FDA safety protocols. The abortion training curricula are\u00a0published<\/a> with grant dollars<\/a> from abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories.<\/p>\n

If cost is an obstacle, Grossman suggests insurance foot the bill for the abortion pill<\/b><\/p>\n

Grossman seemed concerned over “potential obstacles” to providing the pills in advance of a pregnancy, with ethics and the safety of women \u2014 and even potential abuse victims \u2014 nowhere among the list of concerns. Instead, the major “obstacle,” according to Grossman, was the cost of the abortion pill regimen, which is currently set by the abortion industry determined to make a profit.<\/p>\n

“Mifepristone… has a price tag of about $70. (The second drug, misoprostol, costs about $5.) Unless the price of mifepristone is reduced or medical insurance covers the pill, it is unlikely that advance provision of abortion pills would be widely adopted,” Grossman wrote.<\/p>\n

To remedy this “obstacle,” Grossman did not extol the “virtue” of reducing abortion facility profits but instead suggested that insurance companies should pick up the tab. Surely taxpayer funding would not be far behind. Grossman then called for “more research,” announcing his plans to “start such a study next year.” I’m sure it goes without saying that such a study is likely to arrive at a predetermined abortion-favorable conclusion.<\/p>\n
