The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) recently blasted<\/a> Google and Facebook for allowing pro-life group Live Action<\/a> to run ads directing women who regret taking the abortion pill to the Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) hotline. But CCDH didn’t stop there. The little-known group<\/span>\u00a0went a step further by requiring penance from Facebook and Google, demanding that they donate revenue from the pro-life ads to “reproductive health charities” and “women’s health organizations” \u2014 meaning the abortion industry. It is unclear whether the social media organizations will acquiesce to this portion of CCDH’s demands.<\/p>\n

The demands were\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0in a report entitled, “Endangering Women for Profit,” which claimed that\u00a0APR is “dangerous and unproven.” In reality, APR consists of medically supervised treatment with the hormone progesterone to counter the progesterone-blocking effects of the abortion pill (mifepristone). <\/span><\/p>\n

The move to censor information opposing abortion is not new. Live Action News previously<\/a> documented how the pro-abortion Campaign for Accountability sent a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0asking the FDA urging it to\u00a0shut down the websites<\/a>\u00a0of pro-life organizations that advertise abortion pill\u00a0reversal. And much more recently, New York’s\u00a0Governor Kathy Hochul<\/a>\u00a0sent a letter<\/a> to Facebook, asking the social media giant to “address the spread of misinformation” regarding abortion, which she claimed was a “safe, common medical procedure.”<\/p>\n

The Center for Countering Digital Hate is\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0on its website as “an international not-for-profit NGO that\u00a0seeks to\u00a0disrupt the architecture of online hate and misinformation. The Center has offices\u00a0in London and Washington DC.” <\/span><\/p>\n

The premise of CCDH’s “claims” against APR comes from sources with deep ties to the abortion industry, and in some cases connections to the abortion pill manufacturer or their investors.<\/p>\n

Claim #1: APR is “an unproven and potentially unsafe procedure”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biased source for that claim is openDemocracy, which is funded<\/a>\u00a0by a large investor of Danco Laboratories, manufacturer of the abortion pill.<\/p>\n

That investor is the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, which invested\u00a0$14.2 million<\/a>\u00a0into Danco’s startup in 1996 and\u00a0is now also\u00a0investing<\/a>\u00a0millions into\u00a0GenBioPro<\/a>, Inc., an FDA-approved company\u00a0which began manufacturing a generic version of the abortion pill in 2019.<\/p>\n

“So-called abortion ‘reversal’ or ‘abortion pill reversal’ (APR) is an unproven and potentially unsafe procedure that purports to ‘reverse’ the effects of a medical abortion through the administration of high doses of the hormone progesterone,<\/em>” the CCDH’s report<\/a> states.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In\u00a02020<\/a>, the Packard Foundation gave\u00a0openDemocracy<\/a>\u00a0$300,000 to \u201c[t]o build a new and more inclusive international consortium of investigative journalists focused on reproductive and sexual rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, openDemocracy\u2019s Board\u00a0chair<\/a>, Suzanna Taverne, is actually a\u00a0former Chair<\/a>\u00a0at the UK-based abortion chain, Marie Stopes International (recently\u00a0renamed<\/a>\u00a0MSI Reproductive Choices to obscure the chain\u2019s eugenic past).<\/p>\n

The George Soros-funded\u00a0Open Society Foundations<\/a>, a long-time\u00a0pro-abortion philanthropist,<\/a>\u00a0is also a supporter of openDemocracy\u00a0(2012-2015<\/a>,\u00a02019<\/a>). In\u00a02004<\/a>, openDemocracy LTD\u2019s website listed the\u00a0Rockefeller Foundation\u00a0as a\u00a0donor<\/a>\u00a0which the Foundation continued to\u00a0support<\/a>\u00a0the company years after. The\u00a0Rockefeller Foundation has long\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0eugenics and\u00a0abortion<\/a>\u00a0organizations including the\u00a0Population Council<\/a>, which brought the abortion pill to the U.S.<\/p>\n

Claim #2: APR is “not based on science” and “based on \u2018unproven, unethical research'”<\/strong><\/p>\n

This biased claim is sourced as from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a radical pro-abortion<\/a>\u00a0organization which was influenced<\/a> by population control enthusiasts to embrace abortion on demand.<\/p>\n

ACOG has been\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by Ibis Reproductive Health which received\u00a0funds<\/a>\u00a0directly from U.S. abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories and is currently\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by Danco investor, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.<\/p>\n

The ACOG has\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a>, where abortionists are trained. In 2018, the ACOG\u00a0received<\/a>\u00a0$1.4 million from the Buffett Foundation, and has received hundreds of thousands from the foundation every year for the\u00a0past<\/a>\u00a0several years. Unsurprisingly, Buffett was also one of the first\u00a0investors<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Danco<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Experts from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG] have long warned that claims about so-called abortion ‘reversal’ are ‘not based on science’ and are based on ‘unproven, unethical research.’ They have also condemned legislative mandates for so-called ‘reversal’ as ‘dangerous to women\u2019s health,<\/em>‘” wrote CCDH, sourcing the ACOG.<\/p>\n

“[]experts have warned that socalled abortion \u201creversal\u201d is \u201cdangerous to women\u2019s health<\/em>,” the report stated further down, again citing ACOG.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Claim #3: There is a “lack of medical evidence demonstrating the safety and efficacy” of the APR treatment \u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

That claim comes from commentary<\/a> coauthored by Dr. Daniel\u00a0Grossman\u00a0who has also\u00a0served<\/a>\u00a0as a consultant to Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights. Grossman is also\u00a0a vocal proponent of expanding abortion and is an\u00a0abortionist<\/a>\u00a0with deep ties<\/a> to the abortion industry and multiple\u00a0conflicts of interest<\/a>\u00a0surrounding abortion pill studies.<\/p>\n

Ironically, at the same time the commentary cited by CCDH was published, Grossman was serving<\/a> as senior advisor at\u00a0Ibis Reproductive Health which was\u00a0directly funded<\/a> by abortion pill manufacturer, Danco Laboratories and their investor the Packard Foundation. In fact, as recently as 2020, Ibis was still\u00a0directly<\/em>\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Danco<\/a>. The report states:<\/p>\n

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2018, Dr. Daniel Grossman and Dr. Kari White cautioned that there is a \u201clack of medical evidence demonstrating the safety and efficacy of the treatment\u201d and that \u201claws promoting it essentially encourage women to participate in an unmonitored research experiment<\/em>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Claim #4: “There have been no studies that show it [APR] is \u201ceffective or safe”\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This biased claim is sourced from the University of California-Davis (UCD), which\u00a0provides<\/a>\u00a0abortions at the\u00a0Division of Family Planning<\/a>\u00a0and which has been funded<\/a>\u00a0by Packard for\u00a0years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

UCD is the location site for the questionable\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0(sourced by CCDH), whose lead author has been directly funded by Danco Laboratories. That study was conducted with funds<\/a> by the Society of Family Planning (SFP), which was\u00a0founded<\/a>\u00a0in 2005 with a generous contribution from the Packard Foundation and is\u00a0also\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0Buffett Foundation<\/a>\u00a0(billionaire Warren Buffett), a\u00a0Danco investor.<\/p>\n

That\u00a0study, \u201cMifepristone Antagonization With Progesterone to Prevent Medical Abortion,\u201d was published<\/a> by\u00a0the\u00a0Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, commonly referred to as \u201cThe Green Journal,\u201d which is the official publication of the previously mentioned pro-abortion ACOG.<\/p>\n

The potential profit motive<\/a> of the lead author of the study<\/a> Mitchell Creinin, has been all but been ignored by the media and CCDH.\u00a0By his own admission,\u00a0Creinin<\/a>\u00a0receives \u201ccompensation<\/a>\u201d from Danco as a\u00a0consultant<\/a>,\u00a0receives<\/a>\u00a0consulting fees<\/a>\u00a0and has\u00a0received<\/a>\u00a0an\u00a0honorarium<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0the abortion pill\u2019s manufacturer. Creinin also provides\u00a0\u201cthird-party telephone consults<\/a>\u201d for Danco.<\/p>\n

UCD is part<\/a> of the University of California (UC) system also funded by Danco’s\u00a0original investors<\/a>, the Buffett Foundation and the Packard Foundation\u00a0<\/a> (which funded them for\u00a0years,<\/a>\u00a0including\u00a0regular\u00a0grant dollars<\/a>\u00a0to UC.)\u00a0A\u00a0publication<\/a>\u00a0in which UC\u00a0honored<\/a>\u00a0\u201cabortion pioneers\u201d reveals its long history of abortion promotion.<\/p>\n

Buffett\u00a0gave<\/a>\u00a0at least $2 million in interest-free loans to the Population Council for clinical trials of RU-486, according to tax documents filed in 1995. Buffett\u00a0gave<\/a>\u00a0$78 million to UC in past years: $52 million for the Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program which trains abortionists; $5.3 million so that UC\u2019s Davis, UCLA, San Diego and Irvine residents could participate in Ryan; and $8.6 million towards the pro-abortion Turnaway Study at UCSF\u2019s Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health Center (ANSIRH). The CCDH report states:<\/p>\n

In 2019, a study to test the effectiveness of so-called abortion ‘reversal’ was suddenly halted when several participants experienced ‘dangerous hemorrhaging’ that sent them to the hospital.’ While some states have legislated for so-called abortion ‘reversal’ to be discussed in mandatory pre-abortion counselling, experts say that there have been no studies that show it is ‘effective or safe.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

CCDH’s demand to Facebook and Google<\/strong><\/p>\n

In its report, CCDH claims that by accepting payment for ads promoting abortion pill reversal, Facebook and Google were “complicit in spreading health misinformation” and must therefore “stop accepting ads for so-called abortion ‘reversal’ now and in perpetuity,” and remove advertising privileges from pro-life organizations.\u00a0CCDH also demanded that Google and Facebook should turn over “revenues from these ads” to abortion rights organizations, which they refer to as “women\u2019s health organizations that provide science-based healthcare for women.”<\/p>\n

Which is exactly what Google did.<\/p>\n

Shortly after CCDH’s report was published, Google banned<\/a>\u00a0all of Live Action’s pro-life ads, including<\/a> those that promote APR.\u00a0In their online release<\/a>, Live Action called the move “a perverse demonstration of big tech\u2019s aggressive censorship of life saving messages.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically,\u00a0while CCDH claims to be the arbiter of “misinformation,” the alleged watchdog group fails to publish information on who is funding their campaigns against pro-life messages online. Perhaps in the spirit of full disclosure, CCDH will release that information. Until then, we watch and wait.<\/span><\/p>\n
