One Catholic university in Chicago offers a health care plan to students that includes coverage for abortion.<\/p>\n

As first reported by The College Fix<\/a>, Saint Xavier University\u2019s student health care includes coverage for abortion. \u201cBenefits include abortion care services,\u201d reads a sentence in the Saint Xavier University Insurance Certificate<\/a>, a coverage plan provided to students in partnership with Gallagher Student Health. The abortion coverage was also included in the previous academic year\u2019s health care plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The College Fix noted that the Archdiocese of Chicago declined to comment on the university\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n

Sarah Michalak, a 2019 graduate and now Students for Life of America Upper Midwest Regional Coordinator, told The College Fix that her alma mater’s policy violates her faith\u2019s core ideals. \u201cAs an alumna of Saint Xavier University I am disappointed to see they are not upholding their Catholic ideals. Catholic universities should be beacons of life, love and truth,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s the responsibility of Catholic universities to authentically care for their students, and abortion is not authentic support for pregnant and parenting students.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university, which was founded in 1846 and is celebrating its 175th anniversary, markets itself as having been the first university in the world founded by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic religious order, as well as having the distinction of being Chicago\u2019s first Catholic university, according to the school\u2019s website<\/a>. The university\u2019s website also calls Saint Xavier a \u201cfour-year, private Catholic institution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university\u2019s policy is in direct violation of the Catholic Church\u2019s stance on the sanctity of human life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches<\/a> that abortion is gravely sinful: \u201cSince the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law (No. 2271).\u201d<\/p>\n

Michalak told The College Fix that Students for Life of America plans to work with the university\u2019s pro-life group, Students for Life SXU, to \u201caddress these issues and concerns with the Saint Xavier administration.\u201d Michalak expressed hope that university leadership would change its health care plans. \u201cWe know that abortion is not authentic support and we will fight for pregnant and parenting students and preborn babies. If the university is unaware of this inconsistency, we are hoping that they will correct their error immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, three Christian universities \u2014 Lubbock Christian University, Clarks Summit University, and Pepperdine University \u2014 dropped their affiliation with Planned Parenthood after having been contacted by Students for Life Action, as Live Action News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n
