(National Review<\/a>) Please understand, dear readers, that when assisted-suicide advocates promise strict guidelines to protect against abuse, they don\u2019t really mean it. The promise\u2019s purpose is to get the law passed, not to be kept.<\/p>\n

Once facilitated, suicide \u2014 or in the case of euthanasia, homicide \u2014 is firmly ensconced in public policy, the guidelines go by the wayside and are loosened repeatedly, over time. For recent examples, see Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Washington, and Oregon.<\/p>\n

We see boosting stories for this process of liberalizing frequently in the popular media, only the vaunted guidelines are now called\u00a0\u201cobstacles\u201d or \u201cbarriers.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0It\u2019s all such a con.<\/p>\n

Now Hawaii\u2019s Department of Health predictably urges a loosening of existing protections.\u00a0From the Department\u2019s Annual Report<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The DOH recommends the following changes to the OCOCA.<\/em>
\n1. Waiver of any waiting periods if the attending provider and consulting provider agree that patient death is likely prior to the end of the waiting periods.<\/em>
\n2. Given access to health care providers is limited, the DOH recommends authorizing advance practice registered nurses to serve as attending providers for patients seeking medical aid in dying.<\/em><\/p>\n

Please know that if you support legalizing assisted suicide, you are also endorsing a process that ultimately leads to death on demand \u2014\u00a0as it has in Germany<\/a>. You may want that. But don\u2019t play the game that legalizing assisted suicide will only be an itsy-bitsy change in the law and medical ethics.<\/p>\n

READ:\u00a0Suicide is a tragedy \u2013 even for the sick, disabled, and dying<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Calling Hawaii\u2019s bureaucrat death-pushers the \u201cDepartment of Health\u201d is akin to the totalitarian government in\u00a01984<\/em>\u00a0calling its torture and brainwashing department the\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Ministry of Love.\u201d<\/p>\n
