Live Action News has learned that multiple spokespersons and study authors on the payroll of the abortion pill manufacturer Danco and its generic GenBioPro are often cited by the media without question and their studies are openly promoted.\u00a0The abortion pill, which has long been shrouded in\u00a0secrecy<\/a>, is more than a profitable venture. The abortion industry is\u00a0estimated<\/a>\u00a0to gross nearly $200 million annually in abortion pill sales\u00a0\u2014 twice as much money as initially\u00a0projected<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Who’s funding the abortion pill?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The abortion pill (mifepristone) was brought<\/a>\u00a0to the U.S. by the\u00a0eugenics-founded<\/a>\u00a0Population Council which later\u00a0established<\/a>\u00a0Danco Laboratories to manufacture the pill. The Population Council was in charge of overseeing clinical trials for the abortion pill and set up a system through which it would also\u00a0receive<\/a>\u00a0royalties from its sales. From the onset<\/a>, Danco’s\u00a0executives, company structure and original investors<\/a>\u00a0have been\u00a0shrouded in secrecy<\/a> with the exception of a select few like the Packard and\u00a0Buffett Foundations<\/a>, as well as billionaire\u00a0George Soros<\/a>\u2018 Open Society Foundations.<\/p>\n

In 1996,\u00a0the\u00a0David and Lucile Packard Foundation,\u00a0(a\u00a0substantial donor<\/a>\u00a0to Planned Parenthood<\/a>, the\u00a0National Abortion Federation (NAF)<\/a>, and\u00a0NARAL)<\/a>, invested\u00a0$14.2 million<\/a>\u00a0into Danco and\u00a0is now also\u00a0investing<\/a>\u00a0millions in\u00a0GenBioPro<\/a>, Inc., an FDA-approved company\u00a0which began manufacturing a generic version of the abortion pill in 2019.\u00a0Packard has also\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0Gynuity Health Projects,<\/b>\u00a0which is currently conducting abortion pill\u00a0clinical trials<\/a>\u00a0and a number of\u00a0studies<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0goal<\/a>\u00a0of expanding access to the abortion pill regimen. The\u00a0Buffett<\/a>\u00a0and Packard Foundations then finance\u00a0studies<\/a>\u00a0used to convince the public that abortion is safe<\/a>, yet the media fails to point out this conflict of interest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Who has financial ties to the abortion pill?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Courtney A Schreiber <\/strong>recently declared that she has received “personal fees<\/a>” as well as “consulting fees<\/a>” from Danco Laboratories. She is an\u00a0assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and a\u00a0member<\/a> of the National Abortion Federation, Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health, and Society of Family Planning (SFP). Schreiber has co-authored research published by\u00a0JAMA Network Open<\/a>, Perspectives on Sexual Health (PSH<\/a>), Reproductive Psychiatry and Women\u2019s Health (RPWH<\/a>), New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM<\/a>), Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JOG<\/a>), American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology AJOG<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Contraception (see\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0here<\/a>, and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Schreiber is cited by the media as an expert. She recently\u00a0referred<\/a> to a law requiring doctors to inform patients about abortion pill reversal (APR) as \u201cdeeply distressing\u201d and \u201cmortifyingly harmful,\u201d\u00a0with no disclosures of any conflicts. She has admitted<\/a> to teaching both chemical and surgical abortion, and claims to have “expertise in the conduct of human-subjects research in reproduction.”<\/p>\n

“I am an expert in the provision of abortion services, having provided this procedure to over 5,000 patients as an integral component of my practice,” she stated<\/a> in a court deposition.<\/p>\n

Caitlin S. Shannon <\/strong>and Beverly Winikoff received funding from George Soros’ Open Society Institute to\u00a0publish<\/a>\u00a0a 2005 study in\u00a0the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JOG). In 2008,\u00a0JOG published<\/a>\u00a0another piece co-authored with Beverly Winikoff\u00a0and\u00a0Ilana G. Dzuba.In that “randomized controlled trial” their disclsure noted that Gynuity (where all three authors worked) had a contract<\/a> with Danco Laboratories at that time.<\/p>\n

Beverly Winikoff <\/strong>is founder and President of Gynuity Health Projects<\/a>, which conducts clinical trials to expand use of the abortion pill.\u00a0When Gynuity<\/a>\u00a0abortion pill trials were conducted, the company\u00a0received<\/a>\u00a0financial support from\u00a0Ibis Reproductive Health which was directly\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by Danco.\u00a0Winikoff has served on the board<\/a>\u00a0of NAF, which was at one time directly\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by Danco, as well investors the\u00a0Buffett<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Packard<\/a>\u00a0Foundations. Cited often as an expert by the media, in 2019, Winikoff coauthored a cross-sectional analysis of mifepristone\u00a0published in Contraception<\/a> where she declared<\/a>\u00a0“no known competing financial interests.”<\/p>\n

Ilana G. Dzuba<\/strong> is listed as a senior advisor<\/a> at Gynuity. Despite Gynuity’s previous contract with Danco, in August 2020, Dzuba co-authored “a\u00a0retrospective chart review of medical abortion outcomes”\u00a0published\u00a0in Contraception<\/a> where she, too,\u00a0declared<\/a> “no conflict of interest.”<\/p>\n

In a 2015 commentary published in\u00a0Contraception<\/a>,\u00a0Dzuba,\u00a0Schreiber, and Daniel Grossman (noted below)\u00a0praised the off-label indications for the abortion pill mifepristone.\u00a0In 2016, Dzuba and Winikoff claimed in Contraception<\/a> that “evidence supports outpatient abortion services” of medication abortion through 77 days gestation \u2014\u00a0beyond the 70-day limit set by the FDA’s REMS safety system.<\/p>\n

In January 2020, Dzuba co-authored a study to assess “efficacy of a common outpatient medical abortion regimen,” also published in Contraception<\/a>\u00a0along with Winikoff and others. There the authors declared “no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work.” Again, in 2019 Dzuba and Winikoff published a report of their randomized trial in Contraception<\/a>\u00a0with no conflicts declared. Dzuba and Winikoff\u00a0are currently principal investigators for a clinical trial experiment<\/a>\u00a0using the abortion pill regimen well into the second trimester.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u00a0Grossman<\/strong> is a vocal proponent of expanding abortion and an\u00a0abortionist<\/a>\u00a0with multiple\u00a0conflicts of interest<\/a>\u00a0surrounding abortion pill studies.\u00a0In 2015,\u00a0Grossman,\u00a0Dzuba,\u00a0and Schreiber published a\u00a0commentary in\u00a0Contraception, previously mentioned. At that time, Grossman was serving as VP of research<\/a> of Ibis Reproductive Health, which was being funded<\/a> by Danco. Today, Grossman is a\u00a0senior adviser<\/a>\u00a0at Ibis which, as recently as 2020, was still\u00a0directly<\/em>\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Danco<\/a>. Grossman has also served<\/a> as a consultant to Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights.\u00a0Yet Grossman is regularly cited by the media without any mention of a conflict of interest.<\/p>\n

Mitchell D. Creinin <\/strong>is\u00a0an author of an\u00a0American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)\u00a0Practice Bulletin<\/a> citing the safety of abortion pill up to 70 weeks gestation. ACOG’s bulletin cites as its proof research from Creinin himself as well as others who have been paid by the abortion pill manufacturer, such as Courtney A Schreiber,\u00a0Caitlin S. Shannon, and Beverly Winikoff.<\/p>\n

Live Action News previously\u00a0documented<\/a>\u00a0Creinin\u2019s\u00a0conflicts of interest<\/a>, noting that, by his own admission,\u00a0Creinin\u00a0receives<\/a> “compensation<\/a>” from Danco as a\u00a0consultant<\/a>, receives<\/a>\u00a0consulting fees<\/a>\u00a0and has received<\/a> an honorarium<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0the abortion pill’s manufacturer. Creinin also provides\u00a0\u201cthird-party telephone consults<\/a>\u201d for Danco.<\/p>\n

Creinin\u00a0has co-authored research published in the\u00a0New England Journal of Medicine<\/a> (NEJM<\/a>), Obstetrics and Gynecology (here<\/a>,\u00a0here<\/a>, and\u00a0here<\/a>), journal Contraception<\/a>, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG)<\/a>\u00a0and the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPHA)<\/a>.\u00a0Creinin\u00a0is cited by the media, which fails<\/a> to publish his financial conflicts, heavy pro-abortion connections, and clear pro-abortion bias.<\/p>\n

Creinin, Grossman, and Schreiber all\u00a0serve<\/a> on the editorial board of Contraception, the official journal of SFP,\u00a0founded<\/a>\u00a0with a \u201cgenerous contribution\u201d from the Packard Foundation and\u00a0receiving<\/a>\u00a0millions from the Buffett Foundation.<\/p>\n

Karen Meckstroth <\/strong>has received\u00a0“personal fees<\/a>” from Danco and has been listed as a\u00a0\u201cconsultant<\/a>\u201d of Danco. She is on staff<\/a> at\u00a0UCSF<\/a>\u00a0and is the\u00a0director<\/a>\u00a0of Women\u2019s Options Center, an abortion facility which\u00a0commits<\/a>\u00a0abortion up to the\u00a023rd week<\/a>\u00a0of pregnancy. It is also one of the\u00a0sites<\/a>\u00a0for a pharmacy-dispensed abortion pill clinical trial. Her research has been published at Pharmacy<\/a>,\u00a0JAMA Network Open<\/a>,\u00a0the Journal of\u00a0Obstetrics and Gynecology (JOG<\/a>), the\u00a0International journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics<\/a>, and the\u00a0Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPHA)<\/a>.\u00a0Meckstroth is also cited<\/a> by the media.<\/p>\n

Sally Rafie\u00a0<\/strong>is a consultant<\/a> for GenBioPro, the generic of abortion pill manufacturer Danco. She\u00a0is a pharmacist<\/a> at UC San Diego<\/a> and a former pharmacist consultant for Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest.\u00a0She founded the organization Birth Control Pharmacist with help from a grant<\/a> by SFP. Rafie’s\u00a0online bio<\/a>\u00a0states that she “has trained and worked with Planned Parenthood, University of California San Diego Medical Center, University of California San Francisco, and San Francisco General Hospital.”<\/p>\n

Rafie’s research has been published in\u00a0Contraception<\/a>\u00a0and the Journal of\u00a0Obstetrics and Gynecology (JOG<\/a>). In March of 2021 she co-authored an opinion piece published<\/a> by Pharmacy Times promoting the “safety” of the abortion pill for pharmacy dispensing, where she did not disclose her close ties to the generic manufacturer GenBioPro. Then, in April of 2021, Ms. Magazine published<\/a> an opinion piece authored by Rafie and Grossman promoting the lifting of the FDA’s REMS on the abortion pill and calling on the Biden administration to allow pharmacists to dispense the deadly abortion pill. None of their conflicts were mentioned in that particular piece.<\/p>\n

Kirsten M J Thompson <\/strong>also receives “personal fees<\/a>” from GenBioPro. She is a\u00a0Program & Communications Director<\/a> at UCSF\u2019s\u00a0Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a>, where abortionists are trained<\/a>. Thompson’s research has been published by JAMA Open Network<\/a>\u00a0as well as\u00a0AJOG<\/a>.<\/p>\n

DeShawn Taylor <\/strong>is a senior medical director<\/a> and a\u00a0consultant<\/a> for GenBioPro, the generic of the abortion pill manufacturer. Taylor is also\u00a0listed<\/a> as owner and medical director<\/a> of Desert Star Family Planning clinic in Arizona. She has worked at Planned Parenthood facilities in Arizona and Nevada, and served as Board Chair<\/a> for NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona. Taylor is one of the Planned Parenthood abortionists<\/a>\u00a0recorded in undercover video<\/a>\u00a0by the Center for Medical Progress<\/a>\u00a0admitting to committing abortions \u201cup to 24 weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor is also cited<\/a> by the media<\/a> as an expert and she recently co-authored<\/a> an opinion piece with Whole Woman’s Health Alliance (abortion chain) board member<\/a> and activist Lizz Winstead at Tucson.com where she is described as “a board-certified OB\/GYN, clinical professor, women\u2019s health and reproductive rights advocate and owner of Desert Star Family Planning in Phoenix” with no mention of her financial conflicts of interest regarding abortion pill generic manufacturer GenBioPro.<\/p>\n
