JAMA Network Open has published the results of a mail order abortion pill “retrospective cohort study” co-authored by a doctor who admits to receiving payments from the original abortion pill manufacturer, Danco Laboratories. Additional authors\u00a0of the study<\/a>, “Safety and Efficacy of Telehealth Medication Abortions in the US During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” are directly tied to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), which trains future abortionists. All of the authors claim that mail order (telehealth) abortion during the COVID-19 pandemic is safe.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

Due to serious risks<\/a> associated with the abortion pill<\/a>, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented a safety requirement called REMS, which required prescribers of the abortion pill Mifeprex to have an in-person meeting with abortion clients to accurately determine gestational age and rule out potentially deadly ectopic pregnancies.<\/p>\n

Then, well before<\/a>\u00a0the COVID-19 pandemic, the abortion industry\u00a0expanded<\/a>\u00a0its abortion pill clinical trials and rolled out<\/a>\u00a0a \u201cno test<\/a>\u201d abortion pill protocol,\u00a0eliminating a requirement for tests \u2014 a move which potentially\u00a0endangers<\/a>\u00a0women.<\/p>\n

This was decided despite the fact that even the pro-abortion<\/a> American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has\u00a0admitted<\/a> that a large percentage of women do not accurately date their own pregnancies.\u00a0This matters in abortion, because\u00a0failure rates<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0complications<\/a>\u00a0of abortion drugs\u00a0increase<\/a>\u00a0as gestational age increases.<\/p>\n

But under pressure from the abortion industry, in\u00a0April of 2021, the Biden-Harris FDA issued a\u00a0temporary change<\/a>\u00a0allowing the dispensing of the abortion pill\u00a0by mail<\/em>\u00a0under the guise of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Study Results<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

The extremely small sample of just 141 clients \u2014 only 110 of whom responded \u2014 were customers of an unregulated abortion pill dispensary called\u00a0Choix, Inc.<\/a> (\u201cchoice\u201d in English) which “shared deidentified health record data for all patients” with the authors’ research team.<\/p>\n

Online, CHOIX, Inc.\u00a0admits<\/a>\u00a0it is operated \u201cby a team of nurse practitioners [Cindy Adam and Lauren Dubey], doctors [only one of whom is listed], and engineers in California.\u201d\u00a0 According to Ms. Magazine, the organization began offering the abortion pill to anyone over the age of 16 on October 28, 2020, in California. Staff physician Aisha Wagner previously\u00a0worked<\/a>\u00a0for UCSF\u2019s Women\u2019s Option Center, an abortion facility at the University of California San Francisco.<\/p>\n

According to the study authors<\/a>, out of the 110 clients who responded, “105 (95%) had a complete abortion without intervention. Five patients (5%) required medical care to complete the abortion, 2 of whom were treated in emergency departments.\u00a0\u00a0No patients reported any major adverse events,” the authors claimed.<\/p>\n

“For a study of this nature, 141 patients is a very small sample size,” Dr. Michael New, Research Associate at the Busch School of Business at The Catholic University of America and associate scholar<\/a> at the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute told Live Action News.\u00a0However, Dr. New pointed out that “out of the 141 patients who obtained chemical abortions, 13 patients did not<\/em> respond to a follow up survey. Additionally, the researchers were unable to obtain information about outcomes from 18 additional patients.”<\/p>\n

“Overall, the researchers have no information about outcomes from over 20 percent of the women who obtained chemical abortions. That raises serious concerns about the credibility and reliability of these findings,” Dr. New stated.<\/p>\n

Even the study authors had to acknowedge this fact, writing, “This study is small with some loss to follow-up, and thus some adverse events and ongoing pregnancies may have been undetected.”<\/p>\n

Dr. New then compared the study to other studies with significantly higher sample sizes that showed the dangers of the abortion pill.\u00a0“A 2015 Obstetrics and Gynecology study which found that chemical abortions have a complication rate that is approximately four times higher than surgical abortions analyzed a comprehensive dataset of over 50,000 California Medicaid patients who obtained abortions,” New noted. “A 2009 Obstetrics and Gynecology study with a similar finding analyzed outcomes from approximately 42,000 Finnish women who had abortions.”<\/p>\n

Nationally, it is important to note that\u00a0changes<\/a>\u00a0made to the\u00a0REMS<\/a>\u00a0by the FDA in 2016\u00a0no longer required the manufacturer of the abortion pill,\u00a0Danco<\/a>\u00a0Laboratories or its generic GenBioPro, to\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0non-fatal adverse effects.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Study Authors<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

Dr. Ushma Upadhyay <\/strong>is an Associate Professor at UCSF’s<\/a> Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH).\u00a0ANSIRH is part of UCSF\u2019s\u00a0Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a>, and its focus is abortion. Ironically,\u00a0in 2019<\/a>, well before the pandemic, Dr. Upadhyay advocated a “no test\/no touch” approach where she and her colleagues suggested that abortion providers simply “believe the woman” about the exact dating of her pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Leah R.\u00a0Koenig<\/strong>\u00a0also works at UCSF with ANSIRH on studies that “focus on testing new models for abortion services,” according to her online bio<\/a>. Her LinkedIn page<\/a> reveals she previously worked at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,\u00a0a\u00a0known financier<\/a>\u00a0of pro-abortion organizations which currently\u00a0funds<\/a> DKT International, a global distributor of the abortion pill and abortion kits.<\/p>\n

Dr. Karen Meckstroth\u00a0<\/strong>is on staff at UCSF<\/a> and is the\u00a0director<\/a>\u00a0of Women\u2019s Options Center, an abortion facility which\u00a0commits<\/a>\u00a0abortion up to the\u00a023rd week<\/a>\u00a0of pregnancy. It is also one of the\u00a0sites<\/a>\u00a0for a pharmacy-dispensed abortion pill clinical trial. She was the only author to disclose a potential conflict of interest.<\/p>\n

According to the JAMA study, “Dr Meckstroth reported receiving personal fees from Danco, Inc, a distributor of mifepristone, for staffing a US Food and Drug Administration\u2013mandated expert hotline. The mifepristone used in this care was purchased from GenBioPro, not Danco. No other disclosures were reported.” Meckstroth is listed on other studies<\/a> as a Danco “consultant.”<\/p>\n

UCSF and ANSIRH<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

Three of these authors are connected to UCSF and two are connected to ANSIRH.<\/p>\n

It is no secret that\u00a0original investors<\/a>\u00a0in Danco (the Packard and Buffett Foundations) have\u00a0invested<\/a>\u00a0in the UC system. In past years, Buffett\u00a0gave<\/a>\u00a0$78 million to UC \u2014 and according to the\u00a0New York Times<\/a>, is the primary financier of the\u00a0Bixby Center\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Ryan Residency Program at\u00a0UCSF<\/a>.<\/p>\n

GenBioPro, the generic version<\/a> of Danco, is heavily funded<\/a> by the Packard Foundation, which also invested well over\u00a0$14.2 million<\/a>\u00a0in Danco shortly after it was established by the eugenics-founded\u00a0Population Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ANSIRH publishes<\/a>\u00a0workbooks on abortion training. This curriculum<\/a> was\u00a0established<\/a>\u00a0with financial help from Packard and\u00a0is\u00a0supported<\/a>\u00a0by NAF, Gynuity, ANSIRH, Planned Parenthood, the Society of Family Planning, Danco, and others. The curriculum\u2019s website also\u00a0admits<\/a>\u00a0that it \u201creceives unrestricted educational grant funding from Danco, LLC,\u201d and has for\u00a0years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This abortion pill study was not the first time an author had serious conflicts of interest<\/a> connected to the pill’s manufacturer or early abortion pill investors. And given the fact that the abortion industry stands to\u00a0make a killing<\/a> on the abortion pill while pro-abortion media refuse to call out the obvious biases, it most likely will not be the last.<\/p>\n
