{"id":251682,"date":"2021-08-23T10:40:03","date_gmt":"2021-08-23T15:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=251682"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:06:19","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:06:19","slug":"mother-dies-abortion-infection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mother-dies-abortion-infection\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother of five dies of infection after undergoing an abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/mum-of-5-dies-after-post-abortion-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) 31-year-old mother-of-five, Sarah Louise Dunn, died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11 April 2020<\/a>\u00a0almost four weeks after having an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>After falling ill following the procedure, she approached her GP at Elizabeth Street Surgery several times over the course of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/blackpool-mum-died-sepsis-two-days-after-asking-doctors-help-3071230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two<\/a>\u00a0weeks.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visited<\/a>\u00a0her doctor on 9 April after her condition did not improve. The next day, she called 111 [a UK medical treatment number] and was taken by ambulance to Victoria Hospital\u2019s A&amp;E department later that day.<\/p>\n<p>At around 2.15 am on 11 April, Dunn died of blood poisoning (sepsis) due to an infection.<\/p>\n<p>During a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-inquest review<\/a>\u00a0at Blackpool Town Hall on 13 August, coroner Louise Rae suggested that an independent expert would likely be called in following a request from Richard Baker, the barrister representing Ms Dunn\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>There is not yet any public information to indicate how far along in her pregnancy she was prior to the abortion, or what type of abortion procedure she underwent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-never-tells-abortion-injuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>What the media never tells you about abortion injuries<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Blackpool Victoria Hospital doctor carried out a review of Ms Dunn\u2019s care, claiming that she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could not have been saved<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However Mr Baker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0an independent expert ought to be consulted, given the doctor responsible for this review was a colleague of those involved in Ms Dunn\u2019s care, and this may have \u201cconsciously or unconsciously\u201d shaped his findings.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>\u00a0that: \u201cIt would be unsatisfactory for Sarah\u2019s family for this to degrade into a debate about whether someone is telling the truth or is biased\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A full investigation into Ms Dunn\u2019s death, with evidence from a pathologist, doctors, nurses, and her GP and pharmacist, has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/expert-to-be-called-in-for-investigation-into-sepsis-death-of-young-blackpool-mum-after-abortion-3347462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arranged<\/a>\u00a0for the first week of November and is expected to take place over five days.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Dunn\u2019s mother Marie Dunn, who attended the pre-inquest hearing at Blackpool Town Hall in December 2020 with her sister and friend,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk\/news\/people\/blackpool-mum-died-sepsis-two-days-after-asking-doctors-help-3071230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cI feel there should be more evidence given from Elizabeth Street Surgery, because that\u2019s who she went to two weeks before she died at the Vic, so I think much more evidence from them needs to be clarified. Help wasn\u2019t given numerous times when she requested it and that\u2019s where the problem stemmed, in my opinion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing natural about sepsis. The flags had been put up and action wasn\u2019t taken\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said: \u201cThis is a completely heartbreaking story, especially given that Ms Dunn\u2019s five young children have been left without their mother.
