{"id":251621,"date":"2021-08-21T13:22:46","date_gmt":"2021-08-21T18:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=251621"},"modified":"2021-08-21T21:05:43","modified_gmt":"2021-08-22T02:05:43","slug":"polish-olympian-auctions-silver-medal-infant-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/polish-olympian-auctions-silver-medal-infant-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Polish Olympian auctions silver medal to help infant in need of heart surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Just days after she took home the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics for the javelin, Polish athlete Maria Andrejczyk placed the medal up for auction in order to help the parents of a baby boy pay for his life-saving heart surgery.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/polish-olympian-auctions-silver-medal-for-infants-heart-surgery-keeps-it-thanks-to-winning-bidder-230743208.html\">Yahoo Sports<\/a>, Andrejczyk announced the auction on Facebook on August 11, five days after winning the silver, explaining that she wanted to raise money for eight-month-old Mi\u0142oszek Malysa, who needs to travel from Poland to Stanford University in California to undergo the surgery. She said she chose to hold the auction to benefit him because of his parents&#8217; heartfelt pleas for help.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Miloszek has a serious heart defect, he needs an operation,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;He also has support from above from\u00a0Kubu\u015b \u2014 a boy who did not make it on time, but wonderful people decided to donate his funds to Mi\u0142oszek. And this is how I want to help too. It is for him that I am auctioning off my Olympic silver medal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fmm.andrejczyk%2Fposts%2F386737949475635&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"562\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mi\u0142oszek\u00a0needed 1.5 million Polish zlotys, the equivalent of about $385,000, to cover the costs of transportation and medical care. The family had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siepomaga.pl\/en\/serce-milka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a> half of the funds and Andrejczyk hoped to raise the other half. In 2018 she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. She underwent surgery and was able to restart her training for the Tokyo Olympics in 2019. She didn&#8217;t think twice about auctioning off her hard-earned medal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The true value of a medal always remains in the heart,&#8221; she told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/polish-olympian-auctions-off-silver-medal-to-help-raise-130-000-for-a-boy-s-heart-surgery-mg7xt5l07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Times of London<\/a>. &#8220;A medal is only an object, but it can be of great value to others. This silver can save lives, instead of collecting dust in a closet. That is why I decided to auction it to help sick children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Poland is one of the most pro-life nations in the world.
