{"id":251606,"date":"2021-08-19T16:37:25","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T21:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=251606"},"modified":"2021-08-24T13:42:26","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T18:42:26","slug":"msnbc-attack-pro-lifers-oppress-taliban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/msnbc-attack-pro-lifers-oppress-taliban\/","title":{"rendered":"MSNBC goes on attack: Pro-lifers want to oppress women like the Taliban"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of the resurgence of the Taliban, some media commentators are apparently looking for ways to score points against their political opponents, allowing them to draw intellectually dishonest comparisons between pro-life Americans and an oppressive, murderous, misogynist regime that is \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/taliban-celebrating-resurgence-seizing-girls-24752882\">at latest report<\/a> \u2014 going door to door capturing girls as young as 12 to become the sex slaves of Taliban officers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent opinion piece by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/afghan-women-s-rights-are-threatened-gop-isn-t-their-n1277034?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSNBC contributor Dean Obeidallah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and others like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2021\/08\/16\/msnbc-host-joy-reid-pro-life-republicans-treat-women-just-like-the-taliban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSNBC host Joy Reid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the suffering of the Afghan people is used to smear the those who advocate for pro-life policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook, nobody is saying the GOP and the Taliban are equally bad,\u201d Obeidallah argues in an attempt to legitimize his point. \u201cBut in just the past few months, we\u2019ve seen Republicans champion measures to deprive women of freedom over their own bodies,\u201d as well as other laws he claims are anti-women. It is evident that Obeidallah\u2019s target is not one political party, but all who hold pro-life beliefs and believe in policies that he thinks \u201coppress\u201d women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Disgusting. <\/p>\n<p>At a time when Afghan women are hiding in their homes and wondering if they will be beat or executed for going to work or school, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSNBC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MSNBC<\/a> is running a piece comparing pro-life Americans to the Taliban. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sYRyCGh6Tv\">pic.twitter.com\/sYRyCGh6Tv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Lila Rose (@LilaGraceRose) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LilaGraceRose\/status\/1428031965471526919?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 18, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is that being pro-life is not limited to a particular political party or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/religiously-pro-life-not-anymore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pro-life convictions are firmly rooted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/catholic-church-doesnt-merely-believe-fertilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pro-lifers are a diverse group of people who share a common belief in the intrinsic value of every human life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Absurd Claim 1:\u00a0 Pro-lifers are working to impose their religious beliefs on others, like the Taliban<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the Taliban, Obeidallah argues, pro-lifers are driven \u201cat least in part, to impose their religious beliefs on all others.\u201d He cites the example of Arkansas\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staging-env.liveaction.org\/news\/arkansas-lawmakers-ban-abortions-governor-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unborn Child Protection Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would outlaw abortion except to save the life of the mother (abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-never-medically-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never medically necessary<\/a>), and claims that Governor Hutchinson\u2019s motivation was \u201cturning his religious beliefs into the law of the land.\u201d As so-called proof, Obeidallah cites the governor\u2019s comment that he was motivated by his &#8220;sincere and long-held pro-life convictions.\u201d But Obeidallah fails to demonstrate how the governor\u2019s convictions <em>against<\/em> the violence and oppression inflicted on preborn humans through abortion equate to the Taliban\u2019s religious fundamentalism that inflicts violence, oppression, and misery on women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The notion that pro-life convictions or policies constitute forcing religious beliefs on other people is simply false. Pro-life convictions, even for religious individuals and organizations, are rooted in the scientific observation that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/science-confirms-that-human-life-begins-at-fertilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human life begins at fertilization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As Pope Francis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pope-francis-abortion-issue-addressed-scientifically\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in a letter to an Argentinian priest, \u201cThe issue of abortion is not essentially religious. It is a human problem prior to any religious option. The abortion issue must be addressed scientifically.\u201d Creating policy based on pro-life convictions is not the equivalent of imposing one&#8217;s religious beliefs on others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One prominent group, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.secularprolife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secular Pro-Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, advances a simple, non-religious argument that captures the essence of what pro-lifers believe: 1) that all preborn babies are human organisms; 2) that all human organisms are morally relevant; 3) that it is generally immoral to kill humans; and 4) that bodily rights aren&#8217;t enough to justify elective abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Secular Pro-Life points out, the notion that human life begins at fertilization \u201cis not a religious premise; it is a biological fact, attested to in countless biology and embryology texts and affirmed by the majority of biologists worldwide.\u201d Indeed, former abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who committed 75,000 abortions before becoming a pro-life activist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/2017\/01\/24\/7-pro-life-quotes-from-people-you-wouldnt-expect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that his newfound pro-life advocacy was rooted in his scientific knowledge: \u201cAs a scientist I know, not believe, know that human life begins at conception.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Absurd Claim 2:\u00a0 Pro-lifers want to control women\u2019s bodies and choices, like the Taliban<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obeidallah also argues that pro-lifers want to control women\u2019s bodies and choices, and thus pose a threat to America similar to that posed by the Taliban in Afghanistan. He claims that \u201cthe ability of women to control their own bodies should be a guaranteed human right,\u201d and that pro-lifers are \u201cdesperate to withhold it from them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/refused-abortion-beat-child-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>She refused abortion, so he tried to beat their preborn child to death<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This kind of rhetoric is without any basis in reality. There is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/eu-resolution-abortion-restrictions-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no fundamental right to end the life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of another human being due to the inconvenient or even traumatic circumstances of their conception. Obeidallah argues that pro-life laws cause unconscionable oppression of women especially in cases of rape, but the truth is that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecourses.liveaction.org\/prolifereplies\/abortion-in-cases-of-rape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence of abortion is not a solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the violence of rape.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The violent act of abortion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/make-together-rape-survivor-choosing-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not heal trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/edith-life-daughter-rape-human-being\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not undo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the assault. But it does kill an entirely innocent human being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obeidallah labels abortion as a human right and therefore concludes that opposition to abortion is oppression. However, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inalienable human right is <em>the right to life<\/em>. Pro-lifers also see women who face difficult pregnancies as deserving of an authentic choice, but not the violence of abortion. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feministsforlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feminists for Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out, \u201cAbortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women.\u201d Pro-lifers believe that instead of society forcing women to choose between motherhood or a career, livelihood, success, and the like, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/empowerment-women-chose-motherhood-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women should be able to do both<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and that we should forge a society where the lives of both mothers and preborn babies are cherished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare these pro-life motivations to the Taliban, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/aug\/16\/malala-yousafzai-deeply-worried-taliban-take-control-afghanistan-girls-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot Malala Yousefzai in the head<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for promoting the education of girls<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Taliban is also restricting the basic rights of women, including the right to move about freely, the right to vote, the right to work, the right to dress in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/17\/taliban-kill-woman-not-wearing-burqa-after-vowing-to-honor-womens-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything but the face-covering niqab<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, of course, the right to life.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The comparison of millions of pro-life Americans \u2014 who want women to be free to work, to be educated, and to choose life for their babies \u2014 with the Taliban is dishonest and shockingly offensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A cynical attack that minimizes the atrocities women will face under the Taliban\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obeidallah is grasping at straws in his cynical quest to use the Taliban\u2019s resurgence to score political points against pro-lifers. This becomes especially evident when he tries to compare prudential policy positions \u2014\u00a0like some pro-life legislators\u2019 lack of support for the Paycheck Fairness Act or the Violence Against Women Act \u2014\u00a0with the Taliban\u2019s oppression of women. This kind of baseless comparison, aside from being patently false, minimizes the atrocities visited upon women by the Taliban, both past and present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to comprehend Obeidallah&#8217;s callous disregard for the real suffering of people tortured and killed by the Taliban, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/news\/its-all-over-for-us-pregnant-woman-attacked-and-blinded-by-taliban-fears-for-afg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dark days ahead for women in Afghanistan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When talking heads compare this terror to the work of pro-lifers in the United States intending to support human flourishing and protect women and babies, one wonders if they take the impending threat to women in Afghanistan seriously. Such a comparison erases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/religious-landscape-study\/views-about-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-lifers who are nonreligious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, confounds very real issues by elevating petty political goals to the level of such atrocities, and delegitimizes the author\u2019s argument. Pro-lifers, who give women life-affirming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/incredible-mom-story-pregnant-college-graduating-honors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seek to protect all human life, will not be deterred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note, 8\/24\/21: This
