This week,\u00a0<\/span>Judicial Watch<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>The Center for Medical Progress<\/span><\/a>\u00a0shared\u00a0<\/span>public records<\/span><\/a>\u00a0obtained from the <\/span>National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a>, showing how the University of Pittsburgh proposed procuring aborted body parts based on the preborn child\u2019s race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Defenders of <\/span>fetal experimentation<\/span><\/a> often argue the use of aborted body parts for research purposes somehow benefits human beings, as the practice allegedly provides <\/span>treatments<\/span><\/a> for life-threatening diseases and other ailments. But the\u00a0disturbing details revealed in the reports expose how fetal experimentation is inconsistent with basic human rights principles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only has such research been proven unnecessary by scientists such as Dr. Tara Sander Lee, Senior Fellow and Director of Life Sciences at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, but due to the availability of <\/span>ethical alternatives<\/span><\/a>, it is also problematic ethically, as it labels certain groups of humans as \u201cunwanted\u201d and targets them for experimentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If any society is to take seriously the inherent dignity of all human beings, the type of research being practiced at the University of Pittsburgh should not be allowed to continue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Exploiting Vulnerable Humans for Research<\/b><\/p>\n

The records released by CMP and Judicial Watch included a $3 million grant application the University of Pittsburgh submitted to NIH in 2015 to become a \u201cfetal distribution hub\u201d for the <\/span>GenitoUrinary Developmental Molecular Anatomy Project (GUDMAP)<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>In the application, the University of Pittsburgh emphasized how it has \u201cover 18 years of experience\u201d collecting aborted baby body parts, making it an ideal candidate for supplying NIH researchers with fetal tissue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, GUDMAP\u2019s <\/span>Tissue Hub<\/span><\/a> website describes how its researchers \u201cisolate human genitourinary tissues\u201d \u2014 <\/span>organs<\/span><\/a> related to the urinary and reproductive systems \u2014 from babies aborted between six and 24 weeks gestation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
