Wade should be overturned"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Nearly 230 Republican legislators issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/aul.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/dobbs.v.jwho_.amicus.brief_.for_.moc_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amicus brief<\/a> on Thursday, urging the Supreme Court to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> when the court hears a case involving Mississippi&#8217;s restriction on abortions after 15 weeks this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The 228 <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/565446-228-republican-lawmakers-urge-supreme-court-to-overrule-roe-v-wade?rl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signatories<\/a> consist of 44 senators and 184 House members representing 40 states, including\u00a0Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Kevin McCarthy<\/span>. The brief comes just days after GOP Senators Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and Mike Lee filed their own separate brief arguing that <em>Roe v. The answer is complex.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mississippi\u2019s case provides the Court a chance to release its vise grip on abortion politics,\u00a0as Congress and the States have shown that they are ready and able to address the issue in ways that reflect Americans&#8217; varying viewpoints and are grounded in the science of fetal development and maternal health,&#8221; wrote the signatories.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yIiTGFdT4IM\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The brief also stated:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The States have expressed the desire to protect life through a burgeoning number of laws enacted to further the States\u2019 important interests in protecting women from dangerous late-term abortion, ending the destruction of human life based on sexism, racism, or ableism, upholding the integrity of the medical profession against the barbaric practice of dismembering human beings in the womb, and protecting preborn infants from the horrific pain of such abortions&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We respectfully urge the Court to affirm the constitutional authority of the federal and state governments to safeguard the lives and health of their citizens, born and not yet born.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The brief refers to the much-anticipated upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mississippi-15-week-abortion-ban-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court case<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em>, which questions the legality of the state&#8217;s 15-week abortion limit. Passed in 2018, the\u00a0Gestational Age Act limits abortions to before 15 weeks gestation (13 weeks post-fertilization). Mississippi&#8217;s only abortion facility, Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization, immediately challenged the law. While the law was initially overturned by two lower courts, which ruled that it was unconstitutional because it limited abortions prior to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fact-check-planned-parenthood-actually-does-perform-abortions-after-viability\/\">age of viability<\/a>, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-mississippi-15-week-abortion-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked the Supreme Court<\/a> to take up the case in June 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous pro-life groups and individuals, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerformedicalprogress.org\/2021\/07\/media-advisory-david-daleiden-and-the-center-for-medical-progress-file-amicus-curiae-brief-in-supreme-court-abortion-limit-case\/\">Center for Medical Progress<\/a>, a coalition of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.secularprolife.org\/2021\/07\/pro-life-feminist-groups-file-amicus.html?fbclid=IwAR2sT7DbN1OoxjI3uff4L0ghzA5FLvV4LF6JdN9LN90ZNHWT0twZaIGHFqE\">secular pro-life groups<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/scientists-ask-supreme-court-to-modernize-outdated-cruel-u-s-abortion-law\/\">Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/a>, have also filed briefs with the Court in favor of overturning <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion opponents believe that the case gives SCOTUS the chance to reverse course on both <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and <em>Planned Parenthood v.
