{"id":250256,"date":"2021-08-02T10:36:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-02T15:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=250256"},"modified":"2021-07-30T20:06:16","modified_gmt":"2021-07-31T01:06:16","slug":"pro-life-senators-hhs-abortion-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-senators-hhs-abortion-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life senators urge HHS to withdraw proposed abortion funding rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>\u201cAbortion is not health care, and American taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize it,\u201d began a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2021\/7\/rubio-hyde-smith-daines-and-colleagues-urge-hhs-to-withdraw-proposed-obamacare-abortion-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> from multiple pro-life senators to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, as the senators demanded a change to a proposed Biden-Administration rule that says otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) joined Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), and 23 others in writing the letter, which opposed the Biden Administration\u2019s efforts to upend the \u201ccongressional intent and the unequivocal legal requirements regarding abortion coverage offered through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-harris-force-americans-abortions-aca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Action News recently reported<\/a> that the Biden Administration is trying to alter the way abortion coverage is billed in health plans which fall under the ACA. As it currently stands, since federal funds cannot cover abortions, those who want abortion coverage are supposed to make separate payments, under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/do\/10.1377\/hblog20200417.39113\/full\/#:~:text=Section%201303%20of%20the%20ACA,%241%20per%20enrollee%20per%20month.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Section 1303<\/a> of the health care law.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2021-07-01\/html\/2021-13993.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed loosened restrictions,<\/a> abortion would no longer be billed separately from the rest of health care coverage. The senators say this would be both illegal and confusing, as well as a violation of conscience protections to Americans, who would not know where their money was going.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/house-spending-bills-forcing-taxpayers-fund-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BREAKING: US House passes spending bills forcing all federal taxpayers to fund abortion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/a6b40f00-9663-441d-be91-6f5ccb66cb24\/8F4E42648246062FFE90E86AF204B562.07.28.21-hydesmith-daines-aca-abortion-separate-payment-public-comment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> notes that \u201c[t]he Proposed Rule directly violates the express text, clear meaning, and Congressional intent of Section 1303.\u201d [The rule] &#8220;also undermines consumer transparency and makes it harder for consumers to know whether their plan covers abortion, which may lead many to pay for abortions in violation of their consciences or religious beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter concludes by saying, \u201cHHS should rigorously enforce the separate abortion payment requirements in the law, as directed by Congress and faithfully implemented by the current regulations, and promptly withdraw the provisions in the Proposed Rule to the contrary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senators also feel like this effort will directly benefit Planned Parenthood specifically, and will increase abortion in general. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2021\/7\/rubio-hyde-smith-daines-and-colleagues-urge-hhs-to-withdraw-proposed-obamacare-abortion-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">They write<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose and effect of the Proposed Rule, in tandem with partisan legislative efforts to expand the ACA, will be to increase taxpayer funding for abortion on demand, to the financial benefit of Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Rubio, Hyde-Smith and Daines, the letter is signed by pro-life Senators Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), John Thune (R-S.D.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cAbortion is not health care, and American taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize it,\u201d began a letter from multiple pro-life senators to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, as the senators demanded a change to a proposed Biden-Administration rule that says otherwise.
