She discovered the truth about her past after initiating a search for her birth parents, an effort which triggered a decades-long journey through half-told tales and seedy small-town secrets gathered in local libraries and door-to-door interviews. In the process, she found not only her genetic family, but hundreds of others who, like her, had been bought and sold out of the back door of a McCaysville, Georgia, clinic which served as the headquarters of Dr. Thomas Hicks\u2019 black-market enterprises during the 1950s and \u201860s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But who, exactly, was Dr. Hicks? What sort of man would presume the power to determine the course of so many lives while at the same time effecting so many deaths?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The dichotomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to those who knew him, he was \u201ca happy-go-lucky <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medium build, with reddish hair, a jaunty walk, and a fondness for money.\u201d One of Hicks\u2019s former neighbors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cHe had the most charming personality.&#8221; Grace Postelle, a local McCaysville historian and another former neighbor, also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantships.net\/adoption\/hicksbabies.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hicks as a charmer. Doris Abernathy, Postelle\u2019s sister, characterized Hicks as follows: \u201cHe was a memorable person, a charming man. \u2026 He [was] a very complex person &#8230; a double person. Who of us is all good or all bad?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hicks seems to have pushed this dichotomy to the limit, if the reputation he left behind is any indicator. William Wright grew up next door to Hicks\u2019s farm just a few miles outside of town. \u201cThere are no neutral feelings about him,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wright, \u201cit&#8217;s either acid or alkaline.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to understand his polarizing effect. He was known for freely <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fresh eggs and produce from his farm with neighbors; he\u2019d also earned the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nickname<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cBulova\u201d because that was the brand of the watch he\u2019d stolen off a dead man\u2019s wrist. He could be relied upon to give <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appalachianhistory.net\/2017\/09\/busted-not-for-selling-babies-but-for.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the town\u2019s poorest residents, but he was also notorious for pulling an elaborate <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">con job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to sell a broken stove. This man, who kept two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mistresses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a town that even today numbers a mere <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biggestuscities.com\/city\/mccaysville-georgia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,200 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was also married to the Sunday school <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1997-jul-06-mn-10123-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the First Baptist Church, where he donated a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appalachianhistory.net\/2017\/09\/busted-not-for-selling-babies-but-for.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wurlitzer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> organ and was a member of the Adams Bible Class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Playing God<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two doors down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from that very same church was a single-story blond brick building with green-and-white striped tin awnings; this is where Dr. Hicks played God over so many lives. The clinic was just a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hair\u2019s breadth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the Tennessee\/Georgia border. This was strategic, as he was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persona non grata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Tennessee medical community. He\u2019d lost his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantships.net\/adoption\/hicksbabies.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Tennessee Copper Company in 1932 for filing more claims than there were miners; then, in 1943, he lost his Tennessee medical license and was imprisoned for selling narcotics to an undercover FBI agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But McCaysville essentially straddles the border, and in Georgia, Hicks was still licensed. Using his legitimate obstetrician practice as a front, he set up shop as an abortionist and black-market \u201cadoption agency.\u201d It didn\u2019t take long for word to get out. This was, at least in part, due to his own self-promotion tactics \u2014 in spite of the illegal nature of his \u201cservices,\u201d Hicks advertised them \u201cin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1997-jul-06-mn-10123-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">messages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scrawled in telephone booths and on highway overpasses,\u201d as well as in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryliving.com\/life\/entertainment\/a29403041\/who-is-dr-thomas-j-hicks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bus stations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the customers rolled in \u2014 so many that an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appalachianhistory.net\/2017\/09\/busted-not-for-selling-babies-but-for.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airstrip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was built in nearby Ducktown to accommodate them. From there, they would be brought to the back door of Hicks\u2019s facility via <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantships.net\/adoption\/hicksbabies.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limousine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Everyone in the surrounding region \u2014 including the social <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/LMM3-3WKC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Atlanta and Chattanooga \u2014 knew, but never discussed in tones above a whisper, that inside that building, Hicks would take a girl who was \u201cin trouble\u201d and, in his <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">words<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cfix her right up\u201d in exchange for a $100 fee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His clinic was so infamous that it even <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS4.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the novel &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peachtree Road&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Anne Rivers Siddons, who said that although she never knew the doctor\u2019s name, his clinic was \u201ccommon knowledge\u201d among her 20-something aged Atlanta social circle. \u201cThese were girls from very substantial, fine, old Southern families,\u201d she said. \u201cThe way you got in touch was through your boyfriend. Some he treated as merchandise, convincing the mothers to carry to term so that he could sell the babies to one of the names on his \u201cwaiting list.\u201d He would assure these women that no one would ever know they\u2019d had a baby, and would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appalachianhistory.net\/2017\/09\/busted-not-for-selling-babies-but-for.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them in the clinic, at his farm, in his apartments in the telephone company building, or in the New York Hotel in Copperhill, just across the Tennessee border.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such woman was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delores Hammond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She was 21, unemployed, separated from her husband \u2014 who didn\u2019t want children \u2014 and she was scared. She went to Hicks for an abortion, but he persuaded her to give birth and let another couple adopt the child. She spent her pregnancy living in a small room behind the beauty parlor, where she also worked, which was operated by a woman named Vera \u2014 one of Hicks\u2019s mistresses. After giving birth, \u201cDelores heard her baby cry but never saw it. Vera told her it was a boy, and that he had been given to a couple who drove a big Cadillac.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hicks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryliving.com\/life\/entertainment\/a29403041\/who-is-dr-thomas-j-hicks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to some women who came to him for obstetric services, telling them their babies were stillborn, then selling the newborns to other families. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/hicks-baby-adoptee-sold-georgia-doctor-50-years\/story?id=32743492\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thelma Tipton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one such woman. \u201c[He said] she had a bad heart\u2026 and I believed it,\u201d Tipton said. Hicks even had her sign a phony death certificate. One week later, Hicks sold the child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prospective buyers added their names to a waiting list. Appalachian History <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appalachianhistory.net\/2017\/09\/busted-not-for-selling-babies-but-for.html\">reports<\/a>, \u201cOnce a baby was available, Hicks wasted neither time nor words with his prospective buyers. \u2018You have 24 hours to come or I call the next person on the list,\u2019 he\u2019s reported to have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to more than one client.\u201d He also warned buyers that if they expressed a preference for a boy or a girl, they could forget about getting a baby. If they complied with these expectations, they were, eventually, supplied with newborns and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/LMM3-3WKC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falsified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> birth certificates naming them as the biological parents. In exchange, couples could expect to pay up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryliving.com\/life\/entertainment\/a29403041\/who-is-dr-thomas-j-hicks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the birth mothers? Edna McPherson, who bought three babies from Hicks, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/LMM3-3WKC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he was \u201cunfailingly attentive\u201d to them, saying that sometimes he would buy the mothers a new dress. She claimed, \u201cThe woman who had my son got her hair fixed that day, and he paid for it.\u201d One cannot help but wonder if Vera was the stylist. When McPherson picked up her first baby, her husband caught a quick glimpse of a young, red-haired woman in a back room. She was crying. Before the couple left, they were passed a letter from the mother, expressing her wish that they would \u201ccare for, and clothe, and feed [the baby] in the manner in which I cannot.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A leading citizen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is estimated that Hicks sold <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> babies. It is not known how many he killed. Eventually, Hicks was busted in the act of committing an abortion, but even then he managed to skirt legal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1997-jul-06-mn-10123-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consequences<\/span><\/a>. The LA Times wrote<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hicks was indicted on Dec. 8, 1964, on charges of performing an illegal abortion and gave up his medical license that day. But the case never went to trial. A gentleman\u2019s agreement was reached that Hicks would not be called for trial unless he attempted to resume his medical practice.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did the town tolerate his activities for so long? \u201cEveryone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1997-jul-06-mn-10123-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that there was something dark and secretive going on,\u201d Greg Crawford, a local bank executive who grew up in McCaysville, recounted to the Times. But people seem not to have cared, at least not very much \u2014 they either made excuses for what he did, ignored it, or attempted to glorify it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like to think of the payments made to Hicks for the babies not as profits, but as expenses covered.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hicks &#8220;was not making a lot of money from these babies,&#8221; Postelle <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know of any that went for more than $1,000.&#8221; $1000 in 1960 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.in2013dollars.com\/us\/inflation\/1960?amount=1000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equivalent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to approximately $9,200 today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, it was apathy, a reluctance to rock the boat, and Hicks\u2019 veneer of respectability that provided the necessary social shield for his illegal enterprises. &#8220;He was a leading citizen, remember that,&#8221; Postelle <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.rootsweb.com\/~msroots\/misc\/BMA\/HICKS1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marlene Hardiman\u2019s words, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K29B-4CQH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly to the heart of the problem: \u201cHe didn&#8217;t perform any service that anyone didn&#8217;t request.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heaven help us if that is to be the metric by which our society measures its moral decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jane Blasio\u2019s recent book, &#8220;Taken at Birth,&#8221; recounts her story of being sold as a newborn in an off-the-books adoption transaction by a doctor who also acted as the region\u2019s not-so-secret illegal abortionist.
