{"id":250071,"date":"2021-07-30T08:31:33","date_gmt":"2021-07-30T13:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=250071"},"modified":"2021-07-29T21:40:46","modified_gmt":"2021-07-30T02:40:46","slug":"msnbc-scotus-justice-barrett-handmaid-pro-lifers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/msnbc-scotus-justice-barrett-handmaid-pro-lifers\/","title":{"rendered":"MSNBC likens SCOTUS Justice Barrett to a &#8216;handmaid&#8217; while smearing all pro-lifers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>An MSNBC panel on Saturday attacked pro-life advocates and conservatives for allegedly treating women like &#8220;incubators&#8221; while also taking aim directly at Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, calling her a &#8220;real-life Handmaid.&#8221;\u00a0MSNBC&#8217;s &#8220;The Cross Connection,&#8221; hosted by Tiffany Cross, featured a panel created to discuss the upcoming Supreme Court case <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mississippi-15-week-abortion-ban-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dobbs vs. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em><\/a>, regarding Mississippi&#8217;s 15-week restriction on abortion.\u00a0On the panel were Felice\u00a0Le\u00f3n of The Root and Elie Mystal from The Nation.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/msnbc-slam-pro-life-advocates-treat-women-like-incubators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>,\u00a0Le\u00f3n first smeared Mississippi Attorney General Lynn <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mississippi-fitch-scotus-brief-roe-outdated-scientific\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fitch<\/a>\u00a0as a\u00a0&#8220;wealthy white woman&#8221; whose pro-life beliefs she considers an attack against women of color.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MRC TV video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/embed\/562152\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also know that women of color, and low-income women, get abortions at higher rates than white women and more affluent women,&#8221; said\u00a0Le\u00f3n. &#8220;So any law will impact my sisters, my black and brown sisters in Mississippi for sure, and this really shows that the attorney general ultimately is a wealthy white woman who is acting in the interest of conservatives and other wealthy white women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/look-2020-racism-white-supremacy-abortion-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A look back at 2020: Racism and white supremacy exposed within abortion industry<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But Fitch, as the attorney general of her state, has an obligation to protect the constituency she sees are being preyed upon by a vastly unaccountable abortion industry. Women of color statistically have a higher abortion rate than white women, not necessarily because they <em>want<\/em> abortions, but because the abortion industry targets certain people groups \u2014\u00a0and Planned Parenthood has had a laser focus on Black and minority women since its <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-past-targeting-black-happening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inception<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-black-organizing-program-targets-population\/\">continues today<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theunchoice.com\/pdf\/FactSheets\/ForcedAbortions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sixty-four percent<\/a> of women who have had abortions say they were pressured to do so.<\/p>\n<p>But what Le\u00f3n ignores is the fact that protecting &#8220;black and brown&#8221; babies and women from abortion is a moral good. If protecting &#8220;black and brown&#8221; babies and women from abortion is &#8220;in the interest of &#8230; wealthy white women,&#8221; then wouldn&#8217;t that mean that women like AG Fitch care about women of color <em>and their babies<\/em>? Encouraging more abortions among minority women means that there are fewer minorities in existence. Some would argue that this is, in fact, what is racist. The pro-life community includes women and men of every race, and pro-life pregnancy centers exist to provide women of every race with the resources and support they need to not only <em>choose<\/em> life, but live a stable life.<\/p>\n<p>Mystal then added that Fitch is treating women like &#8220;they&#8217;re incubators with mouthparts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After 26 weeks, we treat women like they&#8217;re incubators will mouthparts&#8230;&#8221; he said. &#8220;The case that was already in front of the Supreme Court next year seeks to destroy that baseline demarcation of fetal viability, and allow the states to start treating women like incubators with mouthparts earlier and earlier and earlier in the process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No one believes women are &#8220;incubators with mouthparts,&#8221; but their preborn babies <em>are<\/em> human beings who deserve to be protected. At 26 weeks, a woman is more than halfway into her pregnancy and her baby is capable of surviving outside the womb with medical assistance. There is no reason to have an abortion at any point in pregnancy, but at 26 weeks the baby is <em>well beyond<\/em> the age of viability \u2014 which currently sits at about 21 weeks. Even if the mother&#8217;s life were at risk, the baby could be delivered safely and quickly via an emergency C-section while an abortion at this stage would take days.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-replies-abortion-never-medically-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>WATCH Pro-Life Replies: Abortion is actually never medically necessary<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The panel also mentioned the Hulu series &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8221; \u2014 a show based on Margaret Atwood&#8217;s dystopian novel in which a fertility crisis leads the ruling class of men in the Republic of Gilead (New England) to force young women to produce children for them. Mystal and Cross ridiculously compared pro-lifers to these men in Gilead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Remember, already, after fetal viability, we treat women like we&#8217;re in Gilead already,&#8221; said Mystal.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. law does not allow women to be forcibly impregnated by men, whether they are in relationships with those men or not.\u00a0\u00a0Pregnancy is most often the biological result of consensual sexual activity.\u00a0Pro-lifers are not forcing women to become pregnant; they are asking that women don&#8217;t kill the babies they have already conceived.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8221; sounds more like the modern-day &#8220;rent women&#8217;s bodies&#8221; trend of surrogacy, in which women are paid by wealthy couples to carry babies for them at the expense of their own bodies. Surrogates are treated as incubators, some of them <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/human-interest\/california-mom-of-two-surrogate-dies-giving-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sacrificing<\/a> their own lives and being <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/surrogate-pregnant-triplets-threatened-financial-ruin-doesnt-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced<\/a> into <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/surrogate-mom-ordered-abort-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortions<\/a> when the couple changes their mind or the baby is diagnosed with a health condition. Other women act as egg donors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc-network.org\/eggsploitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sacrificing<\/a> their health. It is this\u00a0movement \u2014 in which women are <em>actually<\/em> <em>used<\/em> for their bodies to create children for other people \u2014 which mirrors the dystopian future in &#8220;The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cross then claimed that Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is &#8220;an actual, real-life Handmaid on the Supreme Court&#8221; without any thought to the fact that Barrett has children with her devoted husband who has supported her in a career that has led her to the Supreme Court \u2014 the best of the best of the judges in the United States. This doesn&#8217;t sound &#8220;handmaid in Gilead&#8221; to anyone who&#8217;s actually paying attention.<\/p>\n<p>The lies that built the abortion industry are crumbling, making abortion advocates change their strategy to focus on attacking good people working to do the right thing and end legalized abortion once and for all. Abortion advocates know that most Americans want abortion restricted to the first trimester \u2014 which Mississippi&#8217;s law would do. Instead of being truthful, they would rather belittle pro-life women like Barrett and Fitch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An MSNBC panel on Saturday attacked pro-life advocates and conservatives for allegedly treating women like &#8220;incubators&#8221;
