The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/facilities\/public_health_and_health_planning_council\/meetings\/2021-07-29\/docs\/full_council_agenda.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council is set to hold a hearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the new hospital Thursday, July 29.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/news\/local\/nyclu-calls-on-state-to-require-abortions-at-catholic-hospital-in-lockport\/article_39d24432-ee33-11eb-a1bb-df7e0cb824e9.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buffalo News reported this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that NYCLU fellow Gabriella Larios \u201cdenied Monday that the group opposes a new hospital for Lockport or that its recommendations, if adopted, would infringe on Catholic Health&#8217;s religious liberty.\u201d According to the news outlet, Larios said,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we are trying to do here is ensure is that health care is available to all people \u2013 comprehensive health care, reproductive health care, end-of-life care. This is not a religious liberty issue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Larios\u2019 page on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.equaljusticeworks.org\/fellows\/gabriella-larios\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equal Justice Works website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points to a mission that undermines religion\u2019s involvement in any way with health care, and reports that Larios actively works against organizations that use religious beliefs to uphold their practices. Her <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profile says<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in part:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All across\u00a0the country, religion is being weaponized to deny access to health care and services relating to reproductive and LGBTQ care.\u00a0In recent years,\u00a0there has\u00a0been an uptick in the number of mergers between secular and religious hospitals;\u00a0today at least one in six hospital beds is in a Catholic facility. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religiously affiliated health care providers often follow religious and ethical directives prohibiting\u00a0certain kinds of treatment,\u00a0including\u00a0miscarriage management\u00a0and\u00a0gender-affirming surgery.\u00a0These\u00a0directives\u00a0depart greatly from\u00a0medical\u00a0standards of care,\u00a0threatening\u00a0patients\u2019 health\u00a0and\u00a0lives\u00a0and\u00a0inflicting\u00a0dignitary harms.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larios does not expand upon her claim that religious hospitals \u2014\u00a0which are required to have the same certifications as any hospital \u2014 would \u201cdepart greatly from medical standards of care.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-healthcare-professionals-conscience-catholic-hospitals\/\">Pro-life healthcare professionals face conscience protection issues\u2026.even at Catholic hospitals<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buffalo News further reports<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the planned new Lockport facility &#8220;will have a significant primary care and OB\/GYN presence to promote health for the entire family including women and children.&#8221; But the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/news\/local\/nyclu-calls-on-state-to-require-abortions-at-catholic-hospital-in-lockport\/article_39d24432-ee33-11eb-a1bb-df7e0cb824e9.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story adds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the NYCLU believes simply offering OB\/GYN care isn\u2019t the same as offering a full array of women\u2019s services, \u201cincluding access to contraception, unrestricted miscarriage management, tubal ligations, and abortion care.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Catholic Health Services practices Catholic principles and, therefore, does not commit abortions, there are other facilities in the Buffalo area where women do have access to abortions and other services, which was noted by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buffalo News<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; three other hospitals also exist within the 20-mile area. Yet the NYCLU claims if the new Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary&#8217;s Hospital is built, access to certain procedures will be restricted due to Catholic beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chsbuffalo.org\/category\/news-pr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic Health has won a variety of awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has been providing services in the Buffalo area for a number of years, yet the NYCLU argues that unless its mission includes abortion-related services, it would not be providing proper care. Larios\u2019 profile indicates that it is part of her mission to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8220;work to ensure no New Yorker is turned away from seeking health care or accessing services because of a provider\u2019s religious affiliation,\u201d adding that she stated<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0just last year, \u201cNo person should be denied health care because of a provider\u2019s religious beliefs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who argue for freedom of choice when it comes to abortion have in recent years made clear that it is not enough to have that legal freedom \u2014\u00a0medical professionals must be forced against their consciences to help them obtain the abortions they seek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), a localized branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is asking New York state to force a new Catholic hospital to agree to commit abortions if it wants to open.
