One news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/rich-snp-donors-charity-funding-24472762\">targeted<\/a>\u00a0a Christian multi-millionaire who donated to a pro-life, anti-euthanasia organization called Care Not Killing. In return, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiked-online.com\/2021\/07\/13\/the-eugenicist-roots-of-the-assisted-dying-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/the-disturbing-campaign-to-legalise-assisted-dying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media outlets<\/a> are shining a light on the origins of the pro-euthanasia organization Dignity in Dying UK, which has a troubled history \u2014 much like the connection between racist eugenicist Margaret Sanger and her organization, Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>The assisted suicide advocacy group now known as Dignity in Dying UK was first known as the the Voluntary Euthanasia Legalisation Society (VELS) when it was founded in 1935 by a man named Dr. Killick Millard. A founding member of the group, Lord Arthur Ponsonby, introduced the first assisted suicide bill in 1936. In his <a href=\"https:\/\/api.parliament.uk\/historic-hansard\/lords\/1936\/dec\/01\/voluntary-euthanasia-legalisation-bill-hl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">address to Parliament<\/a>, he argued that euthanasia is about \u201cnoble acts of self-sacrifice for others,\u201d and not just \u201cpeople who are sparing themselves pain.\u201d The 1936 assisted suicide bill was defeated by a vote of 35 to 14, but VELS and its successor, Dignity in Dying UK, have continued to advocate for such laws over the decades. Most recently, such advocacy took place this year in the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/parliamentary-initiative-stop-assisted-suicide-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK<\/a>\u00a0as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-57713087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/four-psychiatrists-speak-against-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four psychiatrists speak out against assisted suicide: Legal doesn\u2019t mean ethical<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many other eugenic movements throughout the world at the time, early British euthanasia activists in the 1930s favored euthanasia policies like those put in place by the Nazis, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/002200940103600103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> from Canadian historian Ian Dowbiggin. Dr. Millard was \u201cthe first modern-day doctor to push for involuntary euthanasia of the incurably ill,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtn.com\/catholicism\/library\/past-and-future-history-of-the-world-euthanasia-movement-9646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Life League<\/a>. Dowbiggin noted that members of VELS had a tendency \u201cto obscure the distinctions between voluntary and involuntary euthanasia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding Millard\u2019s eugenic beliefs, Dowbiggin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bioedge.org\/mobile\/view\/right-to-die-in-scotland-people-in-glass-houses-etc\/13838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that \u201cin principle he was not against the notion of euthanasia without consent nor was he unalterably opposed to applying euthanasia for eugenic purposes to young children with mental or emotional deficiencies.\u201d Millard also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiked-online.com\/2021\/07\/13\/the-eugenicist-roots-of-the-assisted-dying-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrated<\/a> the high infant mortality rates of \u201cslum dwellers\u201d because it ensured they would not threaten \u201cthe quality of the race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These unsavory facts were surely not unknown to euthanasia activists. Shockingly, Dowbiggin suspects euthanasia activists destroyed records and evidence showing the truth about the early euthanasia movement\u2019s eugenics connection. In 2015, Dowbiggin said that a graduate student seeking to research his source material <a href=\"https:\/\/alexschadenberg.blogspot.com\/2015\/11\/ian-dowbiggin-scandal-in-euthanasia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was told<\/a> \u201cthat the collection had been intentionally destroyed.\u201d And in fact, this happened a second time with another graduate student, who was told the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>This apparent scrubbing of the records extends to many aspects of the movement, as Dr. Millard\u2019s name does not appear on the website of Dignity in Dying UK, the direct successor to VELS.<\/p>\n<p>No matter how hard activists try, there is no hiding the eugenic origins of a movement that once advocated for \u201cinvoluntary euthanasia.\u201d As Planned Parenthood struggles to come to terms with its racist, eugenic origins which still taint the actions of an organization that targets <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poor and minority women<\/a>, Dignity in Dying UK cannot easily shake the legacy that belies its noble-sounding rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the debate rages on around assisted suicide in the Scottish parliament, the issue is being hotly debated in Scottish media.
