{"id":249715,"date":"2021-07-23T08:37:30","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T13:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=249715"},"modified":"2021-07-22T21:02:18","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T02:02:18","slug":"world-health-organization-at-home-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/world-health-organization-at-home-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"World Health Organization promotes at-home abortions as part of new &#8216;self-care&#8217; guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/the-who-pushes-de-medicalization-of-abortion-in-updated-self-care-guidelines\/\">Washington, D.C.,\u00a0C-FAM<\/a>) Abortion advocates are using WHO guidelines to promote at-home medical abortions, claiming they empower women and maximize \u201ccomfort and support,\u201d despite the known harms.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated \u201cself-care\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240030909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines<\/a> recommending the self-administration of abortion-inducing drugs without the direct supervision of a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen can manage their reproductive health,\u201d said Lilian Muchoki of Women First Digital, a pro-abortion organization providing <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/handle\/10665\/332334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO-approved instructions<\/a> to women seeking abortions in countries where it is restricted or illegal, on a <a href=\"https:\/\/discoverselfcare.community.tc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent webinar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO guidelines assert that the promotion of \u201cself-care\u201d interventions will ensure that individuals, families, and communities can promote health and prevent disease where they lack access to essential health services or when services are disrupted due to emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Interventions include self-administration of injectable contraception, emergency contraception, and pills to induce abortions.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO has a long history of laying the groundwork for widespread access to abortion, including adding abortifacients mifepristone and misoprostol, and the combination packing of the two, to their <a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/the-who-abortion-agenda-another-reason-to-defund-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Essential Medicines Lists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/world-health-organization-telemedicine-diy-abortions-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New World Health Organization guidance urges all countries to institute telemedicine and DIY abortions during COVID-19<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Claiming that self-care interventions have the greatest potential to address unmet needs or demands in marginalized populations, the WHO guidelines promote the use of self-managed abortions \u201cin countries where abortion is illegal or restricted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women First Digital is not the only organization capitalizing on social media technologies and the sudden rise of telemedicine during the pandemic to bring abortion to women living in nations where the procedure is illegal. The Reproductive Health Network Kenya (RHNK) created a virtual network of illegal abortion providers operating within the Kenyan health care system and Planned Parenthood of Ghana (PPG) uses social media messaging to instruct women how to use abortion pills.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is \u201cbased on a dream that abortion will be de-medicalized, the same way that contraception and other options are de-medicalized,\u201d Muchoki said.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite their insistence that self-managed abortions are safe and easy, abortion advocates still face the reality that many women are unwilling to undergo a self-managed abortion at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of these girls, because of the pain they don\u2019t want to have it in their house, but at least we are able to give them the necessary information, so they are able to manage the pain at their level,\u201d said Abigail Ogunro-Yorke, midwife and facility head of PPAG Family Health Clinic, Accra, during the \u201cself-care\u201d webinar.<\/p>\n<p>Clandestine abortion providers often rely on their patients to procure the correct drugs at the correct dosage, and to take the pills as directed. However, many women fail to follow provider instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the women going through the abortion process are nervous and anxious since no one around them realizes they are taking abortion pills, said Nelly Munyasia, Executive Director of RHNK. They \u201conly take the first pill and don\u2019t take the second pill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women who do follow the provider\u2019s instructions are left to deal with the painful and frightening effects of the medications alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClients call often after the second dose. It\u2019s the second dose that scares them,\u201d said Ogunro-Yorke. They \u201cwill be screaming\u201d because they are vomiting and feverish, \u201cand that is what scares them,\u201d advised Ogunro-Yorke.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the evidence that self-managed abortions cause hemorrhaging and other dangerous effects, abortion advocates steadfastly assert that \u201cself-care\u201d abortions empower women and maximize support even though women are left to face the physical, psychological, and emotional consequences of their abortions alone.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s Note: Alexis I.
