On July 16, PolitiFact\u2019s Sasha Hupka <\/span>published<\/span><\/a> a so-called \u201cfact check\u201d addressing a recent Live Action News <\/span>article<\/span><\/a> and associated Live Action social media posts. Hupka took issue with a Live Action social media post which stated that UCSF is \u201charvesting the clitorises, testicles, and penises of murdered babies” \u2014 a claim Hupka rates as “false.” Yet Hupka’s fact check proceeds to affirm the claims she sought to disprove.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, PolitiFact \u201c<\/span>relies on administrative support from the Poynter Institute,\u201d according to its <\/span>website<\/span><\/a>. The Poynter Institute, as Live Action News <\/span>previously reported<\/span><\/a>, is \u201cfunded by known abortion philanthropists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cfact check\u201d concerns a story first published on Live Action News on July 3 exposing documents obtained from UCSF by Pro-Life San Francisco through the California Public Records Act. The emails, which have since been <\/span>published<\/span><\/a> in their entirety by Pro-Life San Francisco (which is not “affiliated” with Live Action, despite Hupka’s claim), clearly communicate the fact of organ and tissue harvesting \u2014 mostly genitals and gonads \u2014 from aborted children as it is transpiring at UCSF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hupka does not dispute the veracity of these documents.<\/span> She confirms it, writing:<\/span><\/p>\n

The emails Live Action cites are real and it is true that UCSF conducts biomedical research using human fetal tissue, including fetal tissue from the genitals. However, the social media posts suggest that UCSF is purposefully killing children to obtain this tissue, which is wildly misleading and inaccurate.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Hupka and the \u201cUCSF officials\u201d she apparently spoke to (neither Live Action nor Live Action News were contacted for comment) seem to largely take issue with Live Action News\u2019s use of terminology, using that as a foundation for declaring the claim “false”:<\/span><\/p>\n

“The [Live Action News] article inaccurately implies throughout, through words such as \u2018procure\u2019 and \u2018harvest,\u2019 that these abortions are being performed in order to obtain tissue, which is false,” officials said.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Despite the claims made in Hupka’s “fact check,” Live Action News never claimed or even implied that abortions were being performed <\/span>for the purpose<\/span><\/i> of obtaining tissue, nor that tissue was taken without consent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Terminology<\/b><\/p>\n

PolitiFact’s issues with the words “procure” and “harvest” are weak at best. The Merriam-Webster definition of \u201c<\/span>procure<\/span><\/a>\u201d is: \u201cto get possession of (something) : to obtain (something) by particular care and effort.\u201d And one definition of \u201c<\/span>harvest<\/span><\/a>\u201d is: \u201cto remove or extract (something, such as living cells, tissues, or organs) from culture … or from a living or recently deceased body especially for transplanting.\u201d Both of these words aptly describe the activities of UCSF staff with regard to the collection of fetal organs and tissue, and neither implies purposely killing someone for the sole purpose of obtaining their tissue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, these are <\/span>industry<\/span><\/i> terms. Live Action News did not invent them, or employ arcane euphemisms. The tissue procurement industry itself standardized these words. Cate Dyer, CEO of StemExpress \u2014 a tissue procurement agency that ended its relationship with Planned Parenthood after being exposed in undercover videos from the Center for Medical Progress \u2014 was <\/span>filmed<\/span><\/a> on May 22, 2015, stating:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So many physicians are like, \u201cOh I can totally procure tissue,\u201d and they can\u2019t\u2026 The procurement for us, I mean it can go really sideways, depending on the facility, and then our samples are destroyed so we started bringing them back even to manage it from a procurement expert standpoint.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

As of 7\/16\/21, Perrin Larton, Procurement Manager at Advanced Bioscience Resources, another tissue procurement company, listed exactly that as her job title on <\/span>Linked In<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

As for use of the term \u201charvesting\u201d in reference to aborted fetal tissue, the NIH uses the term in <\/span>this published study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which utilized fetal tissue\u00a0from UCSF \u2014<\/i>\u00a0and even the abortion-friendly BuzzFeed used the term in a 2015 story discussing undercover videos revealing Planned Parenthood’s role in providing aborted fetal organs for researchers:<\/span><\/p>\n

The other word Hupka took issue with is Live Action\u2019s use of the term \u201cmurder\u201d to describe abortion in related social media posts. One definition of the word \u201c<\/span>murder<\/span><\/a>\u201d is \u201cto kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously.\u201d While the law may currently refuse to acknowledge the killing of a preborn human being by his or her mother as “murder,” at least <\/span>38 states<\/span><\/a> have fetal homicide laws that prosecute the killing of preborn children (other than by abortion) as homicide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pro-life movement argues that the act of killing a human being by <\/span>dismemberment<\/span><\/a> (as is common in second-trimester abortions) or by <\/span>starvation<\/span><\/a> (as is the case with chemical abortions) or by <\/span>vacuuming<\/span><\/a> them up in pieces (as is the case with aspiration abortions), are all both \u201cinhumane\u201d and \u201cbarbarous.\u201d None of these methods of killing are even legal to enact against criminals sentenced to death \u2014 because they are barbaric and inhumane.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abortion survivors<\/b><\/p>\n

Hupka also attempts to discredit a study referenced by Live Action News to support the reality of live births during some abortion procedures, claiming that the study only refers to \u201cmedical abortions induced with misoprostol.\u201d This is not exactly true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study concerns labor induction abortions \u2014 an entirely different procedure than a so-called \u201cmedical\u201d abortion done by pill \u2014 performed without the use of feticide, a practice known to occur at UCSF. The reason Live Action News mentioned the study was <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> to claim that UCSF is harvesting tissues from abortion survivors, but to reference the fact that UCSF <\/span>has no protocol for providing potential abortion survivors with care<\/span><\/i>, whether palliative or life-saving \u2014 a fact UCSF has admitted in correspondence with Pro-Life San Francisco. On its website, <\/span>Pro-Life San Francisco<\/span><\/a> provides more details and documentation on this admission:<\/span><\/p>\n

The university has… confirmed that there are <\/span><\/i>no documents<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>protocols<\/span><\/i><\/a> or procedures in place on verifying signs of life or handling live-birth scenarios, even though <\/span><\/i>their own<\/span><\/i><\/a> curriculum<\/span><\/i><\/a> admits that <\/span><\/i>live<\/span><\/i><\/a> births<\/span><\/i><\/a> do sometimes occur during abortion procedures. All we received was a <\/span><\/i>document <\/span><\/i><\/a>on routine blood tests for newborns at unrelated UCSF sites.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

UCSF admits there have been \u201cmultiple\u2026 unintended live births\u201d during abortions<\/b><\/p>\n

According to UCSF\u2019s own <\/span>online lectures<\/span><\/a>, 95% of post-first-trimester abortions are performed using the \u201cdilation and evacuation\u201d (D&E) method, in which the preborn child is dismembered while still alive, and 5% are labor induction abortions. At UCSF, these would be exactly like the ones described in the cited study, as they <\/span>forgo<\/span><\/a> the use of digoxin, a feticide, for the express purpose of \u201cpreserving\u201d the fetal tissues for procurement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the possibility of live births during both labor induction and dismemberment abortions, UCSF\u2019s own Dr. Eleanor Drey had <\/span>this<\/span><\/a> to say (emphasis added):<\/span><\/p>\n

In the literature describing induction termination, <\/span><\/i>there have been multiple case reports of unintended live births<\/i><\/b>. Less commonly, this outcome can occur before or during D&E if the patient begins laboring before the surgical extraction begins or has enough cervical dilation to allow the fetus to be removed largely intact.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

So, in spite of what Hupka claims UCSF officials have said, there is no question about the fact that live births occur in some abortions. It is, in fact, UCSF officials who are providing that evidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research using the bodies of aborted children<\/b><\/p>\n

Hupka claims that fetal tissue research \u201ccan lead to new drugs and cures for a variety of conditions.\u201d Notably, she cites no examples of either, nor does she provide citations for her other claims of the alleged benefits of fetal tissue research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to physicians and researchers at the <\/span>Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/span><\/a>, the Catholic Medical Association, the Christian Medical Association, the American College of Pediatricians, and the <\/span>American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, <\/span>aborted fetal tissue harvesting is completely <\/span>unnecessary<\/span><\/a>, and has not been quintessential to any major medical or scientific advance. Any claimed purpose for the use of fetal tissue can be ethically served using adult stem cells, iPS cells, and postnatal tissue, Lozier states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like it or not, facts are not determined true or false simply based on the synonyms the author chooses. Nothing in Hupka\u2019s \u201cfact check\u201d proves Live Action\u2019s or Live Action News\u2019s actual claims false; it actually has the opposite effect, providing yet more evidence that organs \u2014 including and especially genitals and gonads \u2014 are being harvested from aborted children for research purposes at UCSF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Live Action president and CEO Lila Rose pointed this out in a press release<\/a>, noting:<\/p>\n

Legalized abortion, the gravest human rights abuse, is now enabling other human rights abuses against innocent children to occur – like the procurement of their organs, including reproductive organs, for research and profit. The atrocities at UCSF show that legalized abortion has led the corrupt abortion industry to look for yet another way to profit from preborn babies\u2019 deaths – now through harvesting their body parts. <\/em><\/p>\n

Despite PolitiFact’s attempt to split hairs over terminology regarding the collection of aborted baby body parts, the group’s “fact check” actually admitted that UCSF is obtaining aborted baby body parts for research, including their genitals….<\/em><\/p>\n

UCSF\u2019s practices should be immediately stopped; if not, their taxpayer funding should be removed. What UCSF is doing is absolutely grotesque. PolitiFact\u2019s work only affirms our reporting.<\/em><\/p>\n
