{"id":248970,"date":"2021-07-11T09:40:16","date_gmt":"2021-07-11T14:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=248970"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:07:42","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:07:42","slug":"14000-preborn-killed-abortion-ireland-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/14000-preborn-killed-abortion-ireland-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 14,000 preborn babies killed by abortion in Ireland in two years since legalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/new-figures-show-13709-abortions-in-ireland-since-law-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK)<\/a> &#8212; Figures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ie\/en\/publication\/ef674-health-regulation-of-termination-of-pregnancy-act-2018-annual-report-on-notifications-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> today by Ireland\u2019s Department of Health reveal that <strong>13,709<\/strong> abortions have taken place in the Republic of Ireland since the country\u2019s new abortion law was introduced on 1 January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2018 a referendum on whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment \u2013 the amendment to the Irish constitution passed in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eighth_Amendment_of_the_Constitution_of_Ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1983<\/a> that explicitly guaranteed the right to life of the unborn \u2013 took place. The \u201cYes\u201d campaign received 66.40% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2018\/may\/26\/irish-abortion-referendum-result-count-begins-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vote<\/a>, and 33.60% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2018\/may\/26\/irish-abortion-referendum-result-count-begins-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted<\/a> \u201cNo\u201d to repealing the amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Following the referendum, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishstatutebook.ie\/eli\/2018\/act\/31\/enacted\/en\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act<\/a> entered Irish law on 20 December 2018 and abortion services <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abortion_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commenced<\/a> on 1 January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 6,577 abortions were carried out in Ireland in 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ie\/en\/publication\/b410b-health-regulation-of-termination-of-pregnancy-act-2018-annual-report-on-notifications-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official figures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Official figures from the UK\u2019s Department of Health and Social Care show an additional <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/992250\/abortion-statistics-2020-data-tables_Final.ods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">194<\/a> abortions took place in England and Wales in 2020 where a Republic of Ireland address was provided. Meanwhile, 36 of the abortions that took place in Ireland in 2020 were for women from Northern Ireland, taking the number of abortions for Irish-resident women in England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland to 6,735.<\/p>\n<p>Before new abortion legislation was introduced to Ireland, the number of abortions that took place in England and Wales for women who were Irish residents in 2018 was <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/808560\/2018_Abortion_Statistics_-_Data_tables__1_.ods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2,879<\/a>. A further 32 abortions were reported to have taken place in Ireland under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act, taking the total number of abortions for Irish residents in 2018 to 2,911.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/healthy-preborn-baby-ireland-aborted-doctors-misdiagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Healthy preborn baby aborted in Ireland after doctors\u2019 misdiagnosis<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These figures show that the total number of abortions that have taken place for Irish-resident women in England, Wales and Ireland recorded in official statistics has increased from 2,911 in 2018 to 6,735 in 2020 \u2013 this represents an additional 3,824 abortions, <strong>an increase of 131%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on today\u2019s figures, Eil\u00eds Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/prolifecampaign.ie\/portfolio_cpt\/29-06-2021-massive-70-increase-in-abortions-since-law-changed-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Today\u2019s abortion figures are devastating and are the opposite of what members of the Government repeatedly promised when they said abortions would be \u2018rare\u2019 if people voted for repeal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In the space of only two years, everything that the pro-life movement warned would happen has sadly come to pass. In addition to the massive increase in abortions, we\u2019ve seen from the recent study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology that babies who survived late-term abortions under Ireland\u2019s new law have been left to die without receiving any palliative or medical care. Voters were promised that nothing as horrifying and inhumane as this would ever happen. Likewise, we were told it was scaremongering to suggest misdiagnoses would occur in the detection of life-limiting conditions resulting in the deaths of unborn babies. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Last week, we learned about the High Court settlement after baby Christopher Joseph Kiely was aborted following a misdiagnosis, leaving his parents bereft and devastated. How many other babies were aborted in similar circumstances under the new law?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The campaign to expand abortion access in Ireland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A review of Ireland\u2019s abortion legislation is currently being undertaken by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/ireland\/irish-news\/abortion-legislation-review-to-begin-donnelly-tells-cabinet-1.4502605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Health<\/a>, while abortion campaigners in Ireland are campaigning for abortion access to be even more expansive.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Termination for Medical Reasons\u2019 group has stated that its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/health-family\/legal-abortion-why-are-women-still-travelling-to-the-uk-every-day-1.4569213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number one<\/a>\u201d request is the total decriminalisation of abortion for medical practitioners, who can face up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/health-family\/legal-abortion-why-are-women-still-travelling-to-the-uk-every-day-1.4569213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourteen years<\/a> in prison if found guilty of providing an abortion outside the provisions of the 2018 Act.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Abortion Rights Campaign\u2019 is requesting that the \u2018DIY\u2019 at-home abortion service, permitted under lockdown regulations, be made permanent. They are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionrightscampaign.ie\/2021\/03\/06\/press-release-review-commencement-welcomed-so-that-more-abortions-can-happen-in-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in favour of<\/a> eliminating gestational limits enshrined in the current abortion law.<\/p>\n<p>There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/londonirisharc.com\/repeal-london\/the-next-step-for-womens-rights-in-ireland-buffer-zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing calls<\/a> to enforce censorship zones around medical premises where abortions are performed. In the wake of the referendum vote in 2018, Minister for Health Simon Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/health-family\/legal-abortion-why-are-women-still-travelling-to-the-uk-every-day-1.4569213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to legislate for \u201csafe access zones\u201d. However, this legislation is yet to be proposed and the Department of Health has said that \u201ca number of legal issues were identified which necessitated further consideration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Every single abortion represents a failure by society to protect the lives of babies in the womb and a failure to offer full support to women with unplanned pregnancies. Those who campaigned to repeal the eighth amendment claimed that this would not increase abortion figures in Ireland, but the figures show a very large increase.
