The state, which is the country\u2019s largest geographically, follows Victoria, which\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-australian-victoria-historic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed similar legislation legalizing the practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2017. Victoria\u2019s law went into effect in mid-2019. As The Conversation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/voluntary-assisted-dying-will-begin-in-wa-this-week-but-one-commonwealth-law-could-get-in-the-way-161982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the states of Tasmania and South Australia are set to enact similar laws in the coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.health.wa.gov.au\/~\/media\/Corp\/Documents\/Health-for\/Voluntary-assisted-dying\/VAD-guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by Western Australia, a medical practitioner must determine that an individual has \u201cat least one disease, illness or medical condition that is advanced, progressive and will cause death.\u201d The condition must \u201ccause death within a period of six months or in the case of a disease, illness or medical condition that is neurodegenerative, within a period of 12 months.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law has limited conscience protections which still require objecting physicians to initiate the procedure. Physicians do not have to participate in assisted dying. However, on the first request of a qualifying individual, even objecting physicians must provide the individual with state-mandated resources, document in the individual\u2019s medical record, and submit the First Request Form. The physician must also register the reason for his or her unwillingness to participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oregon-23-years-assisted-suicide-worst-mental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Oregon has had 23 years of legal assisted suicide, but ranks worst in mental health care<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lana Glogowski, chief executive of Palliative Care WA, expressed concerns about the law\u2019s effect on the future of end-of-life care. \u201cPalliative care hasn&#8217;t had anywhere near the profile that we need. Voluntary assisted dying is accessed ultimately by less than 2 percent of the population,\u201d she said according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-06-30\/wa-voluntary-assisted-dying-laws-to-come-into-effect\/100253268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhat about the 98 percent of the population who won&#8217;t be accessing voluntary assisted dying? What are we doing to share with the vast majority of our community about how they plan for the last stage of their life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the trend that began in The Netherlands, which legalized euthanasia in 2002, many countries around the world are enacting similar legislation. But as Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/learned-two-decades-euthanasia-netherlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the law\u2019s tragic unintended consequences \u2014 particularly the negative effects on the vulnerable, people with disabilities, and others with non-fatal conditions \u2014 have left even former Dutch advocates like Theo Boer to become outspoken critics. As Boer said, \u201cLook closely at the Netherlands because this is where your country may be 20 years from now. We have put in motion something that we have now discovered has more consequences than we ever imagined.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoria has already seen a disturbing increase in assisted suicide in just two years since the law has been in force.
