It\u2019s a project she started 15 years ago, and to which she has dedicated every night since. In all, she has knitted 11,000 hats for newborns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To celebrate Shaffer\u2019s years of generosity, the hospital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/upmcwesternmaryland\/posts\/10158509117676608\">asked parents on social media<\/a> to send photos of their newborns wearing Shaffer\u2019s hats, and the responses poured in. UPMC Western Maryland then put together an album of photos of their babies wearing the hand-knit hats, and presented it to Shaffer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FGoodMorningAmerica%2Fvideos%2F223913689412157%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=476&amp;t=0\" width=\"476\" height=\"591\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t realize making hats would go that far and do that, and I appreciate it a whole lot,\u201d Shaffer said, clearly touched, according to a video posted on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/wellness\/video\/90-year-knit-11000-hats-15-years-newborn-78409136\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Morning America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cYes, it makes me feel proud, wonderful that I can do this to give the babies a warm head to start life with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fupmcwesternmaryland%2Fposts%2F10158509117676608&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"587\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, we normally put the hats on the babies as soon as we dry their heads off. It helps them to maintain their temperature,\u201d a nurse at UPMC Western Maryland said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Parents were eager to share images of their newborns wearing the special hats, including Chip Robinson, who shared the photo of baby Isabella Robinson, Shaffer&#8217;s great-granddaughter born in 2007. He also shared a photo of baby Lyla Robinson, born in 2009, also wearing a hat knit by her great-grandmother. I guess it was like a comfort snuggled up around him,\u201d the Smiths said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernliving.com\/culture\/jeanie-shaffer-knitting-hats-newborns-upmc-western-maryland\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Living<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They intend to make a hat scrapbook with photos of their newborn son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spirited nonagenarian said she is not yet finished with her work. &#8220;I want to live to be 100. I turned 90 in February.
