His latest feat is writing his own memoir, \u201cMore Alike than Different,\u201d an inspiring story of his life, which has been devoted to advocating for himself and others with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs.com\/shows\/cbs_evening_news\/video\/zEhXVChDtLu84xAVTQz0Il1hwdv2M1Vr\/disability-advocate-writes-book-on-his-life-with-down-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBS Evening News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when Egan got the idea of writing a book, it was suggested that his mother, Kathleen Egan, write it. But she knew her son was up to the challenge.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI said, no, no, he has to write his own book. It has to be in his own words,\u201d she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sarg0R31iLE\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book author is only one achievement on a long list of Egan\u2019s accomplishments. He is the first person with an intellectual disability to become a Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Public Policy Fellow, a role which included working on the Ways and Means Social Security subcommittee on Capitol Hill and with the National Down Syndrome Society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egan also represents self-advocates with the National Institutes of Health Down Syndrome Consortium and he has served as a Special Olympics Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger. His impressive work history includes serving as a community relations coordinator for SourceAmerica, a nonprofit organization that creates employment opportunities for people with disabilities, and as a clerk for Booz Allen Hamilton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathleen Egan recalled that when her son was a child, his favorite thing to watch was C-SPAN. Egan himself remembers watching attentively and dreaming of one day delivering speeches to Congress \u2014 a dream he achieved. Egan\u2019s life has been devoted to advocating for those with disabilities. He has delivered speeches around the world, and he hopes his book will be one more way to show that his disabilities do not define him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have Down syndrome. And it&#8217;s not who I am, it&#8217;s part of who I am,\u201d Egan told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/disability-advocate-writes-book-on-his-life-with-down-syndrome\/#x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBS News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/patricia-heaton-orphans-down-syndrome-disabilities-beautiful\/\">Patricia Heaton: Orphans with Down syndrome and disabilities are \u2018beautiful children\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egan is one of many people with Down syndrome proving daily that disabilities don\u2019t have to stand in the way of achieving one\u2019s dreams. Just last month, Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/female-golfer-down-syndrome-national-college-title\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 22-year-old golfer Amy Bockerstette became the first person with Down syndrome to compete in a national collegiate athletic championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/model-down-syndrome-glamour-mag-netherlands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last month on a 26-year-old Dutch woman with Down syndrome who appeared on the cover of Glamour Netherlands. The social media influencer, known simply as Enya, has her own beauty and style account on Instagram at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/DownSyndrome_Queen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DownSyndrome_Queen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with Down syndrome has not held Egan and so many others back from living a full and happy life, and his message that those with Down syndrome and disabilities should dream big is an important one. Their stories reinforce the urgent need to protect preborn children with disabilities by banning abortions based on a genetic prenatal diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And most Americans would agree. According to a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/arizona-multiple-pro-life-bills-governor-desk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Marist poll, the majority of Americans do not support discriminatory abortions, with 70% opposing killing children based on a prenatal diagnosis such as Down syndrome.
