Pediatrician Dr. Mustafa S. Suterwala with Pediatrix Specialist Group of Texas has been advocating reading to premature babies in the NICU since 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctors-nurses-texas-storm-save-nicu-preemie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dedicated medical team braved historic Texas storm to save NICU preemie<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 30 percent of parents with a baby in the NICU experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder,\u201d said Suterwala, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mednax.com\/nicu-reading-program-helps-heal-preemies-and-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEDNAX National Medical Group<\/a>. \u201cThis program can help can reduce a parent\u2019s anxiety. They are often very excited by the KangaREAD Program. Reading is not just a way for parents to help, but also interact, and sometimes even solicit feedback from their baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CHKD\u2019s fledgling program has already benefited one family. Erin McCarthy of Chesapeake, whose baby Charlie was born prematurely at CHKD, expressed her gratitude for the fledgling NICU reading program. \u201c[Reach Out and Read] just makes you feel good, and it\u2019s something you can do for them when really we couldn\u2019t do a whole lot at first,\u201d she said, according to WAVY. \u201cIt kind of made me relax. I feel like it relaxed him. So, I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn NICUs, we are very good at saving lives. That is what we do,\u201d said Dr. Suterwala, according to MEDNAX.
