On Monday June 7, the City of Levelland, Texas (pop. 14,582), became the 30th city in the nation and the 27th city in Texas to pass an enforceable ordinance outlawing abortion within its city limits. The City Council of Levelland had previously passed the ordinance on the first reading<\/a> at the May 17 council meeting, but due to Levelland\u2019s City Charter, the ordinance required a second and final reading and one more vote in order for the ordinance to officially go into effect.<\/p>\n

While Councilman Jim Myatt made the motion to adopt the ordinance with Councilwoman Breann Buxkemper seconding the motion on the first vote, Councilman Michael Stueart made the motion to adopt the ordinance with Councilwoman Buxkemper seconding the motion on the second and final vote. The votes at both meetings were unanimous in favor of the ordinance, 4-0.<\/p>\n

The Levelland Ordinance Outlawing Abortion states, \u201cIt shall be unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Levelland, Texas,\u201d and \u201cIt shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly aid or abet an abortion that occurs in the City of Levelland, Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n
