Texas valedictorian Paxton Smith recently gave a speech decrying pro-life legislation, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-valedictorian-abortion-graduation\/\">saying<\/a>, &#8220;I am terrified that if my contraceptives fail, I am terrified that if I am raped, then my hopes and aspirations and dreams and efforts for my future will no longer matter.&#8221; In that speech, Smith made it clear that she felt her <em>own<\/em> life was more precious than the lives of any children that might unexpectedly be conceived.<\/p>\n<p>But often, supporting a woman&#8217;s &#8220;right&#8221; to kill her own child in an abortion brings a sort of cognitive dissonance, because it goes against everything we instinctively know is right and good \u2014 and sometimes, the truth slips out in unexpected ways. Thank you, because I know it\u2019s been hard for you. It was hard for you as a young girl having a baby, in Mississippi. No education. No training. No skills. <strong>Seventeen, you get pregnant with this baby. Lots of people would have told you to give that baby away. Lots of people would\u2019ve told you to abort that baby. You didn\u2019t do that.<\/strong> I know that was hard. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I want you to know that no matter what, I know that you always did the best you knew how to do. Her mother, Terry Augello, chose life after becoming pregnant during a brief relationship with a flight attendant. Keys <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/grammy-winner-alicia-keys-mom-chose-life\/\">told CBS News<\/a> (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>She was making a really big choice. And at the time, I\u2019m sure she didn\u2019t even know why she was making that choice exactly. But she knew it. She knew what she needed to do&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I can\u2019t even imagine, as a mother today, me sending my kid off into those streets. But if you had to, I mean, what\u2019s she gonna do? She had to go to work, I had to go to school. We had to live. That\u2019s how it is.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>I am so grateful to her for choosing me.<\/strong> And I really appreciate her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Maher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-204460\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Bill-Maher.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Maher abortion\" width=\"500\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Bill-Maher.jpg 555w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Bill-Maher-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Bill-Maher-500x246.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a 2019 episode of his show Real Time, Maher discussed the Hyde Amendment with a panel of guests, one of whom was a vocally pro-abortion female legislator from California. In discussing then-candidate Joe Biden&#8217;s flip-flop from supporting Hyde (which <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/taxpayer-funded-abortion-hyde-poor-abortion-industry\/\">bans federal taxpayer funds from paying for most abortions<\/a>) to opposing it, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/audience-laughs-bill-maher-almost-aborted\/\">Maher said<\/a>\u00a0(emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I&#8217;m pro-choice, but, I mean, I&#8217;m a little squishy and always have been because they told my mother after my sister \u2014 very difficult birth \u2014 she shouldn&#8217;t have another one, so <strong>knowing that I could have been on the cutting room floor<\/strong>&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The audience reacted with laughter to Maher&#8217;s honest retelling of how his life could easily have been ended in abortion, and in an attempt at humor, the female legislator referred to Maher as the &#8220;consequence&#8221; of his mother&#8217;s choice not to abort him.<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, the video segment \u2014 which can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2NZ5Xf52MiU&amp;t=167s\">here<\/a> \u2014 is a good example of how abortion supporters seem to think that 1) women are not equal to men unless they have the &#8220;right&#8221; to kill their children before birth and 2) insinuating that someone should have been aborted is comedy gold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeff Bezos<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_199582\" style=\"width: 511px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199582\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-199582\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jeff-bezos-amazon-700x379.jpg\" alt=\"teen pregnant mom\" width=\"501\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jeff-bezos-amazon-700x379.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jeff-bezos-amazon-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jeff-bezos-amazon-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jeff-bezos-amazon-500x271.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/jeff-bezos-amazon.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-199582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Bezos Screenshot (Business Insider video)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Amazon founder Jeff Bezos&#8217; mother,\u00a0Jacklyn Gise, was 16 when she became pregnant by her 18-year-old boyfriend. The couple went to Mexico and got married, only to divorce shortly thereafter. According to Bezos, he never knew his father. He <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/richest-man-world-born-teenage-mother\/\">said in an interview with CNBC<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>My mom had me when she was 17 years old, and she was still in high school, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and this is in 1964. I can assure you that being a pregnant teenager in high school was not cool in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at that time. And so it was very difficult for her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>My grandfather went to bat for her, and then they tried to kick her out of school, and they\u2019re incredible, so the gift I had was I that had this incredible family.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And on Mother&#8217;s Day 2017, he tweeted this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I won the lottery with my mom. Jobs was grateful, and at one point, he hired a private investigator to locate his birth mother so he could thank her for choosing life. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/steve-jobs-adoption-connected-dots\/\">Jobs said<\/a>\u00a0(emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I wanted to meet [her] mostly to see if she was OK and to thank her, because <strong>I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t end up as an abortion<\/strong>. She was 23 and she went through a lot to have me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It stands to reason that anyone grateful for their own life \u2014 no matter how difficult \u2014 should be pro-life for <em>every child<\/em>\u00a0who, like them, has the potential to become whatever he or she wants to be.
