{"id":246494,"date":"2021-06-11T10:40:29","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T15:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=246494"},"modified":"2021-06-11T22:35:46","modified_gmt":"2021-06-12T03:35:46","slug":"spanish-lawmakers-jail-pro-lifers-models-fetuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/spanish-lawmakers-jail-pro-lifers-models-fetuses\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish lawmakers want to jail pro-lifers for showing &#8216;models of fetuses&#8217; to women"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legislation introduced to Spain\u2019s lower house would create a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d around abortion facilities to prevent any kind of pro-life protest or counseling in the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congreso.es\/public_oficiales\/L14\/CONG\/BOCG\/B\/BOCG-14-B-167-1.PDF#page=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, introduced by the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers\u2019 Party (PSOE) to the Congress of Deputies on May 21, would penalize anyone who \u201charasses or restricts the freedom of a woman who intends to exercise her right\u201d to abortion. Spanish citizens could be punished for \u201cpromoting, favoring, or participating in gatherings in the vicinity of places enabled to interrupt pregnancies\u201d or \u201ccausing an impairment in the freedom or privacy\u201d or women seeking abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill characterized pro-life harassment as \u201capproach[ing] women with photographs, models of fetuses and proclamations against abortion before they enter the clinic. The goal is for women to modify their decision through coercion, intimidation and harassment. In Spain, ACAI has requested a regulation that considers harassment in the clinics of this type of actions as a crime of obstruction of abortion.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/spains-parliament-votes-favor-euthanasia\/\">Spain\u2019s parliament votes in favor of euthanasia, despite protests<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life sidewalk counselors would face punishment of three months to one year imprisonment, or community service of between 31 to 80 days. Anyone who violates the law could also be barred from revisiting the area from anywhere between six months to three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law could also prevent the Spanish pro-life group <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wRCh3n4BgGM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Ambulance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from offering free ultrasounds outside abortion clinics. The ambulance is staffed by professionals and offers the chance to show women the humanity of their babies. Most women who receive these ultrasounds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/elpais\/2019\/11\/18\/inenglish\/1574067256_699300.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultimately choose life for their babies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Pais\u2019 reporting on the subject questioned whether this constituted \u201charassment\u201d; during a testimony of Gador Joya, who runs the ambulance, an official at the regional health meeting speculated that the high rate of success must be due to \u201ctorture.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause [Joya] says that many women decide not to have an abortion when they hear the heartbeat. How many women is that? And what happens to them? What is the psychological and emotional cost for these women?\u201d asked the official, who did not make mention of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/psychological-consequences-abortion\/\">psychological<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-study-confirms-women-suffer-psychological-pain-after-abortion\/\">emotional cost<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences\/\">abortion itself<\/a> upon women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2013\/12-1168\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a 9-0 decision that a Massachusetts buffer zone law unconstitutionally restricted free speech protected by the First Amendment. The ruling protected peaceful one-on-one sidewalk counseling, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2014\/06\/opinion-analysis-a-broader-right-to-oppose-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggesting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that laws could be written to outlaw actual intimidation, obstruction, or forceful entry of abortion facilities.
