{"id":246490,"date":"2021-06-09T18:33:45","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T23:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=246490"},"modified":"2022-03-28T12:40:13","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T17:40:13","slug":"kansas-abortion-numbers-increase-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/kansas-abortion-numbers-increase-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Kansas becoming &#8216;abortion destination&#8217; as abortion numbers increase 9%"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a recent report, abortions increased by nine percent in the state of Kansas in 2020, ending a 20-year downward trend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kdhe.ks.gov\/DocumentCenter\/View\/10433\/Abortions-in-Kansas-2020-PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preliminary report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) attributed the increase to out-of-state patients, who accounted for nearly 52% (3,901) of women seeking abortions. In all, abortions rose to 7,542, an increase of 626. The report indicates that women from Missouri accounted for a majority of those at 3,641, while nearby Texas and Oklahoma out-of-state residents accounted for 556.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, the governor of Oklahoma signed three pro-life laws including a heartbeat bill, as Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oklahoma-multiple-pro-life-heartbeat-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Similarly, the 87th Legislative Session in Texas passed a number of pro-life laws, most notably the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-heartbeat-act-governors-desk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartbeat Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signed into law last month, which Texas Right to Life <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasrighttolife.com\/breaking-texas-house-passes-heartbeat-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cthe strongest pro-life bill to ever reach the Texas House floor.\u201d As Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-heartbeat-act-governors-desk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Heartbeat Act not only outlaws abortions when a heartbeat is detectable but also uniquely allows private citizens to sue doctors who commit such abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled that abortion \u2014 \u201ca woman\u2019s right to make decisions about her body, including the decision whether to continue her pregnancy\u201d \u2014 is protected by the state\u2019s Bill of Rights, as Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/breaking-kansas-supreme-court-declares-right-abortion-state-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The ruling came as a response to a legal challenge against a 2015 law that prohibited violent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/de-abortion-destructive-violent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D&amp;E dismemberment abortions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/kansas-upholds-wrongful-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Supreme Court of Kansas upholds ban on \u2018wrongful birth\u2019 lawsuits<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice Caleb Stegall, the lone dissenting judge to the 2019 ruling, blasted the decision. \u201cThe majority\u2019s decision is so consequential because it fundamentally alters the structure of our government to magnify the power of the state \u2013 all while using that power to arbitrarily grant a regulatory reprieve to the judicially privileged act of abortion,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIn the process, the majority abandons the original public meaning of section 1 of the Kansas Constitution Bill of Rights and paints the interest in unborn life championed by millions of Kansans as rooted in an ugly prejudice. For these reasons, I dissent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kansans for Life lamented the state\u2019s potential future as an \u201cabortion destination\u201d in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kfl.org\/kansas-previews-its-future-as-abortion-destination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTo put this into real perspective,\u201d said director of communications Danielle Underwood, \u201cthe 626 additional abortions in Kansas during 2020 translates into the number of [high school] seniors who should have just completed their last year of secondary education at Wichita Heights and Shawnee Mission North high schools \u2013 combined. All those future leaders \u2013 teachers, health professionals, social workers, journalists and more \u2013 gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior lobbyist Jeanne Gawdun agreed. \u201cGov.
