In Canada, sex-selective abortion is legal and typically targets preborn girls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill, known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cathaywagantall.ca\/c233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex Selective Abortion Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was advanced by MP Cathay Wagantall. It would have made it a crime for a medical practitioner to commit an abortion sought solely on the grounds of the child\u2019s sex. About two-thirds of the Conservative caucus voted in favor of the bill, but ultimately it failed by a shocking margin of 248 to 82.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe debate is over. Women and women alone are in control of their bodies and their health care choices. This is not a place for politicians to weigh in,\u201d Monsef <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/house-of-commons-defeats-bill-to-ban-sex-selective-abortion-but-two-thirds-of-conservatives-vote-in-favour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Monsef claims to champion women\u2019s rights and value equality, being a preborn baby girl in Canada can be a death sentence. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/defendgirls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DefendGirls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a campaign to raise awareness about sex-selective abortions, girls are aborted at a higher rate in Canada than boys. Bill C-233 would have protected girls from being aborted simply for being girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicregister.org\/item\/33168-sex-selective-abortion-bill-defeated-in-house-of-commons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wagantall called out Status of Women Minister Maryam Monsef for her opposition to the bill, telling her, &#8220;You don\u2019t stand up for baby girls in the womb, equality, or human rights. You don\u2019t represent the majority of Canadian women. You represent 16% of Canadians who are pro-abortion any time 4 any reason.&#8221; Prior to the vote, Monsef penned a letter to Conservative leader Erin O\u2019Toole decrying the bill for being \u201cdangerous\u201d and saying women need \u201cfewer barriers and more choices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cathayw\/status\/1400144475637354502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-246481\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/canada-sex-selective.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/canada-sex-selective.jpg 479w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/canada-sex-selective-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the weeks leading up to the vote, pro-life Canadians flooded MP\u2019s offices with pink envelopes representing girls lost to abortion. &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadians are standing up and speaking out to protect baby girls from sex-selective abortion,&#8221; said MP Rachael Harder who <a href=\"https:\/\/defendgirls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supported<\/a> the bill.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve received hundreds of letters and emails from people showing their support for my colleague Cathay Wagantall\u2019s bill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/defendgirls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from MP Arnold Viersen stated, \u201cLately, I have received many pink envelopes from people across Canada wanting to raise awareness about sex selective abortion in Canada and in support of Bill C-233. 84% of Canadians are against this practice. Cathay Wagantall, M.P. has introduced this bill to protect girls and end discrimination.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the proposed legislation was defeated, the pro-life group We Need a Law remains hopeful, noting that the bill has reignited the debate over sex-selective abortion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe debate around sex selective abortion is necessary and will continue,\u201d the group said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weneedalaw.ca\/2021\/06\/sex-selective-abortion-bill-fails-in-house-but-debate-reignited-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWomen\u2019s rights cannot include targeting women before they are born. Sex selective abortion is antithetical to Canada\u2019s commitment to equality and needs to be prohibited as an unacceptable practice. Until MPs have the courage to prohibit this practice, it remains legal and will continue to happen in Canada.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/un-report-sex-selective-abortion-1-2m-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u00a0UN report: Sex-selective abortion kills 1.2 million preborn girls annually<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the heels of the vote, Wagantall expressed her gratitude for the debate and optimism for the future. She also emphasized that the majority of Canadians oppose sex-selective abortion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCanada is the only democratic country in the world with no laws around abortion and, for that, we should be ashamed,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cathaywagantall.ca\/wagantall_reacts_to_vote_on_the_sex_selective_abortion_act_c_233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis was a bill that reflected the hearts and the minds of eighty-four percent of Canadians. The conversation and understanding amongst Canadians is growing. As I\u2019ve said from the outset\u2014if just one pre-born girl\u2019s life is ended solely because of her sex, we need to act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragically, sex-selective abortion is a global issue. Live Action News previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/discrimination-women-sex-selective-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pop.org\/project\/stop-sex-selective-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Population Research Institute (PRI) estimated that approximately 24 million abortions for reasons of sex-selection occurred globally between 2000 and 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAccording to UN statistics, there are 117 million girls missing around the world. Where have they gone? Many of them are left on the sides of roads, drowned, maimed and thrown in trash bins.
