Even though Ireland legalized abortion over two years ago<\/a>, the majority of Irish doctors are refusing to commit abortions. In fact, only about 10% of the 3,496 doctors in Ireland have agreed to participate in killing preborn children.<\/p>\n

A paper released by the National Women’s Council, an Irish pro-abortion<\/a> feminist organization, said that just one in 10 Irish general practitioners are currently committing abortions. The paper was released to coincide with the third anniversary of the referendum to legalize abortion. As of April 2020, 373 doctors had signed contracts with the Health Service Executive to commit abortions, while the Irish College of General Practitioners has an estimated 3,496 doctors practicing in Ireland.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, only about half of Ireland’s maternity hospitals commit abortions. Some hospitals, though, insisted that only doctors willing to commit abortions<\/a> could apply.<\/p>\n

Orla O’Connor, the National Women’s Council director, used this as an excuse to lobby for restrictions on abortion to be loosened even more, telling the Irish Times<\/a> that there needs to be an \u201cextension to the 12-week limit, an end to the three-day waiting period and to the criminalisation of abortion.”<\/p>\n

The lack of doctors willing to commit abortions echoes information released shortly after Irish citizens voted to legalize abortion. In a survey<\/a> of over 3,500 members of the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), only 32% said they would be willing to commit abortions. 43% said they would not<\/em> be willing to commit abortions, while 25% went even further, and said they wouldn’t even make referrals to another doctor for abortions. Pro-life doctor Andrew O\u2019Regan said at the time that there was pressure from the Irish government to force doctors to commit abortions.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what your stance on abortion, you would surely expect the minister to consult with GPs on the ground before legislating,\u201d he said. \u201cGeneral practice is at maximum capacity, we have a big problem trying to recruit GPs and now the government are saying, \u2018We want you to do this as well\u2019, it\u2019s just not on. The referendum was about choice, what about our choice? There\u2019s plenty of doctors willing to do this, we don\u2019t want to block those doctors but don\u2019t force us to be part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
